Convergence means coming together of voice, facsimile, data, video, and image applications, systems, and networks, both wireline and wireless and several others.


Convergence: Fundamental Drivers

Moore’s Law:
-Doubling of processing power every 18 months at same cost.
Metcalf’s Law:
-Value of a network increases geometrically as the network endpoints increase.
Reed’s Law:
-The utility of large networks, particularly social networks, can scale exponentially with the size of the network.
Market Law:
-As competition increases, industry players with appropriate scale will innovate and drive consumer costs down.
Gilder’s Law:
- predicts a six-fold increase of the available Bit Rate every 1.5 years. It will take approx six years to achieve the 1 Tbps (Megacommunications).

5G & WISDOM

It is assumed that the emerging 4G technologies (WiMAX and LTE) and the WISDOM concept will lead the wireless communication towards the realization of true 5G systems.

WISDOM means Wireless Innovative System for Dynamic Operating Megacommunications.


WISDOM Impact

• WISDOM is expected to advance: the state-of-the-art in the architecture of next generation of wireless networks and cognitive technologies
• WISDOM will constitute the building block of the Future Internet.
• WISDOM system will design and develop technologies, systems and network architectures offering up to 1Tb/s communications (1Terabit/s = 1012 bits/s), with a coverage extending from a city region, to a country, the continents and the world.

The objective of the WISDOM system is to create the enabling wireless infrastructure for the human-centric communications in 2020 and beyond. Specifically, WISDOM aims to design and develop novel technologies, systems and networks that integrate into a flexible and dynamically-operating architecture that offers:

•   up to 1Terabit/s wireless link rate in burst-mode and at short distances or as system aggregated traffic; and,
•   at least 250 Mbps to the end user at full mobility;
•   with a coverage extending from the personal space (the home, the car, or the neighborhood), to a city-wide region in a metro environment.

How to be Achieved?

To attain this level of performance, WISDOM will synergistically exploit:
•   higher spectrum efficiencies in smaller cell sizes with optimized dynamic spectrum management across different technologies, and the use of heterogeneous access networks in aggregate;
•   cognitive radio (CR) & cognitive networking (CN) concepts using both newly freed spectrum and higher carrier frequencies;
•   Improved wireless-wireline interfaces with lower overheads to the core & metro network of the future as well as the indoors wired infrastructure.
