Traits of a Perfect Employee

The real challenges of being employed in a competitive business are experienced after you have aced a difficult interview and got the job. In a volatile economy and with ever increasing work pressures, being a good employee can be quite taxing if not approached the right way. However, keeping a few small ideas in mind, you can tackle the everyday challenges of a work environment and display your merit.

Treating co-workers with respect

One of the first signs that can make or break your equation with colleagues is how you treat them. Maintaining a positive rapport with your fellow workers is an important sign of the ideal employee. Respect can be shown to co-workers in many ways from wishing a courteous 'good morning' to appreciating their input. Studies have indicated that co-workers that wish each other with a smile not only foster a positive outlook but also show more interest at work.

Honest and timely communication

The importance of communication has been stressed upon time and again and to become a perfect employee, you should make the extra effort. Be aware that communication entails not just talking but also listening. Approach conversations with your colleagues and bosses with an open mind and focus on progress. Ideal employees communicate honestly with others even if they get into trouble.

Tact however, is equally important. When expressing your opinions, ensure that you are being fair and honest and do so without offending the listener. Any feedback you offer should boost morale and leave the listener eager to do better. On the other hand, any feedback you receive should be taken positively and put into effect immediately.

Team player

A great employee is someone who looks for the positives in every situation and creates a productive atmosphere. Instead of focussing on laurels and recognition, a good employee works towards the betterment of the company. You may not always agree with the opinions of others but a good employee keeps his mind accepting of new ideas. As the perfect employee, you should be open to constructive criticism and ideas that do not match yours.

Focused on problem solving

An ideal employee is a problem solver and not the one to create disturbances in the workplace. Instead of indulging in malicious gossip about co-workers, the ideal employee focuses on solving differences. The ideal employee does not speak ill of other employees and protects words uttered in confidence.

Deep knowledge and understanding of the industry

Needless to say, knowing your job well is one of the most important signs of being a good employee. Keeping extensive knowledge of your industry, the current trends and future trends that will affect your company will make you more open to change, a trait that employers consistently look for. A good employee is also aware of upcoming industry trends, and goes the extra mile to adopt innovative solutions and techniques through knowledge amassed at seminars and workshops.
