What makes you who you are?

To find out how individuality is determined, genetically identical mice were observed in a maze. Inquisitive mice that explored the space grew more neurons than less curious mice. This shows that adult neurogenesis is at least partially shaped by experience, as it alters the brain’s plasticity early in life. Further research may include implanting infrared devices and watching brain patterning over time.

While this experiment does begin to show how experiences help shape personality and individuality, it doesn’t explain why some mice explore more than others. However, this is a huge step in the right direction in determining the impact of nature vs. nurture.
