« on: November 12, 2012, 06:25:19 PM »
Applied mathematics - the branches of mathematics that are involved in the study of the physical or biological or sociological world. In other words, applied mathematics is a branch of mathematics that concerns itself with mathematical methods that are typically used in different fields of engineering, business, and industry. It concerns the application of mathematics in a wide range of disciplines in various areas.

Thus, applied mathematics is a mathematical science with specialized knowledge. This term also describes the professional specialty in which mathematicians work on practical problems; as a profession focused on practical problems, applied mathematics focuses on the formulation and study of mathematical models. In short, it is engaged in the creation, study and application of advanced mathematical methods relevant to specific problems. Once this referred mainly to the application of mathematics to such disciplines as mechanics and fluid dynamics.
