If you can't go to sleep at night, you might have insomnia. Symptoms of insomnia include 1) trouble sleeping at night, 2) waking up at night and unable to go back to sleep, 3) feeling tired when you wake up even though you slept all night, 4) feeling sleepy, fatigued or irritable during the day. If you think you have insomnia, talk to your doctor about available insomnia treatments. But before taking insomnia medication, try these simple steps to see if you can get rid of insomnia.

Things You'll Need:
Comfortable bed
Comfortable pillow

Relax before bedtime. Just before bed, most of you with a family are busy getting dinner on the table, helping with home work, and getting things ready for the next morning. So you go to bed totally exhausted and stressed. Not good. Try taking a relaxing bath or reading a book. Do something to get your adrenaline down before trying to go to sleep.

Exercise. Exercise is absolutely wonderful, however, it gets your adrenaline flowing and makes you energetic. Try exercising at least 5 hours before your bedtime and see if it will get rid of insomnia.

Stop with the nightcaps. Alcohol induces sleep but only let you make it to the second stage and the less restful stage of sleep. This make you feel tired and exhausted during the day and often results in depression.

Watch what you eat and drink. Chocolates, tea, sports drinks, coffee and some medicines are full of caffeine. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system making you more alert and giving you a boost of energy, hence insomnia. You want to be calm and relaxed before going to bed so stay away from high energy foods and drinks. You'll have a better chance of getting rid of insomnia. Lettuce is known to be very beneficial in treating insomnia. It consists of lectucarium a substance that induces sleep. Consuming lettuce juice will provide relief from symptoms. Lettuce seeds can also be taken as a decoction for treating insomnia. Boil 1 tsp of lettuce seeds boiled in ½ a litre of water and bring the mixture to one-third. Milk is vital for treating insomnia. Consuming a glass of milk with a tsp of honey every night prior to going to bed will help. Curd is can also aid.

Adjust the room temperature. If you are too hot or too cold, you will not be able to go to sleep so make sure the room is comfortable

Read. Write. Meditate.

Just lying in bed trying to go to sleep will keep you wake. If you are not sleepy, get out of bed and read a book, write an EHOW article or put on some nice music and meditate. But do something other than lying in bed waiting on sleep because like a watched telephone that doesn't ring -a good night's sleep won't come.

Try to set a sleep schedule. Once the body is accustomed to going to bed and waking up at certain times, you will find yourself falling to sleep easier and getting restful sleep.

If after trying these simple steps, you still cannot sleep at night. Discuss it with your doctor. There is insomnia medication and insomnia treatments that medically trained professionals can provide you.
