In Bengali, Pohela stands for 'first' and 'Falgun' is eleventh month of the Bengali calendar. So, Pohela Falgun is the first day of Bengali month Falgun. The first of Falgun usually falls on 13 February of the Gregorian Calendar.

The day announces the coming of spring in the nature and human life. After a long period of winter of stillness, motionlessness, lifelessness, the nature comes back to life. New green leaves are born on the branches of trees and such a natural change makes people enthusiastic and lively. In winter, the nature becomes dead. You can hear only rustle of dry leaves all around the nature. But with the beginning of the month Falgun, first month of Bashonto (Spring), new buds are born on the trees and you can feel a smooth breeze. Pahela Falgun has turned to a great festival in Bangladesh and West Bengal and in the other Indian states, including Assam, Tripura, Jharkhand and Orrisa. Women are draped in yellow Saris and men wear yellow Panjabi. Different types of programs are held on the eve of this day. Colorful rally comes out to street welcoming the spring. Musical programs are organized at several places. Places all around the country puts on green. The yellow colors of the dresses of the people make the nature livelier.

Pahela Falgun is becoming a part and parcel in the tradition of Bangalees. People from all level of the society observes the day spontaneously making the as a sign of their culture.
