The Computer Systems group at Chalmers conducts research on high-performance and low-power computing, including the design and analysis of 1) efficient architectures for mainstream down to embedded platforms, 2) systems-level software to exploit interesting hardware platforms, and 3) verifiable tools to enable more efficient, accurate design space exploration.
Chalmers is a partner in the HiPEAC European Network of Excellence.
The European ERA (Embedded Reconfigurable Architectures) project studies tradeoffs among reconfigurability, performance, and power within the context of heterogeneous, multi-core systems. Chalmers efforts address the balance between performance and power consumption (at all levels), and reconfigurable memory hierarchy design, in particular. We are recruiting for one PhD position.
Job description
The appointee must also have been admitted to Chalmers Doctoral Programme. PhD student positions are limited to five years and will then normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. Admission and employment are regulated by Chalmers’s “Rules of Procedure for Doctoral Programmes”, §4 and §5. Salary follows the agreement for PhD student positions.

Work start should be as soon as possible.

Required qualifications
Applicants shall have a master’s Degree or equivalent (Sw. civilingenjörsexamen) in Computer Engineering or related discipline. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills (in speaking and in writing) are required. Further, since the research work normally involves developing tools to model detailed computer architectures/systems, good mathematics and programming skills are important. Successful candidates will have a profound interest in computer architecture and a foundation in design principles of both processors and memory systems. Experience with operating systems and compilers is a plus.
Application procedure
The application shall be written in English and include the following items:

* An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
* Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents
* Curriculum Vitae
* Letters of recommendation and name of reference persons (optional)

The application shall be sent electronically as pdf or zipped documents. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.
If any material is not available electronically or cannot be transferred to pdf format, the material can be sent as a hard copy to Registrar. The applicants name and the reference number (2010/188) must be written on the first page of the application.

Sweden : PhD student position in the field of Software Engineering

The research group is a newly established group in the division of Software Engineering and Technology. The group is conducting research on architectural modeling, verification, and validation, architecture description languages (ADLs), validation of quality attributes (a.k.a. non-functional behavior) such as real-time constraints (timeliness and predictability), security etc. The work focuses on quantitative modeling and analysis of software and run-time architectures, engineering impact and trade-offs among dependant quality attributes. Such analysis increases the quality and assurance of a system and its architecture, as well reduces the number of defects flowing down-stream in the development cycle. Thus, it improves efficiency and is conducive to reducing the rework and total development cost. The members of the group have made research contributions to the development of systems in collaboration with industry partners in the avionics and automotive domain.
Members are also involved in leading the development of model-based development and the foundational SAE standard AADL (The Architecture Analysis & Design Language), which has been adopted for embedded, real-time, and safety-critical system development by European Space Agency, Avionics Vehicle System Institute (a consortium with company members from Airbus, Boeing, British Aerospace, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin to just mention a few), Toyota etc, and a number of EU funded research programs including ASSERT, SPICES, and ARTIST.
The group has strong collaboration with the Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University; University of Virginia, Charlottesville (UVA); and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Other opportunities for international collaboration are possible. It is possible for the interested doctoral student to experience an extended stay at these universities as a visiting scholar.
Job description
As a Ph.D. student you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties at the department, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the project and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.
Aim of work

The work focuses on developing analyses, using architectural models, and associated non-invasive methods supporting the notion of virtual system integration. The analyses and methods should support the system development and life-cycle activities at large, and specifically system and software architecting. Thus, there is a strong need for conducting quantitative architectural analysis of the system in pre-coding phases, which requires low- to high-fidelity models that can be incrementally refined and yet analyzed. The detailed scope of the work will be defined together with the doctoral student based on mutual interests, scientific merits, and industrial relevance.
Application details

It is highly recommended that you include or e-mail letters of recommendation: we typically get a large number of applications, and it is simply not feasible for us to request individual letters. It is essential that the application includes all relevant work such as theses and articles that you have authored or co-authored.
Qualifications
Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite for applying since English is our working language for research, and we publish internationally. Also Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses. Half of our researchers and PhD students are native Swedes; the rest come from more than 30 different countries.
Applicants shall have a Master’s Degree or corresponding (Sw. civilingenjörsexamen) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering or in a related discipline. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, orally as well as literally, are needed. Further, since the research work normally involves developing architectural models and analytical techniques, good programming skills are important. A successful candidate should have a profound interest in software engineering and software and system architectures.
You may apply even though you might not have completed your degree yet, but expect to do so before the position starts.
In order to improve gender balance, Chalmers welcomes applications from female candidates in particular.
Application procedure
The application shall be written in English and include the following items:
An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents
Curriculum Vitae
Letters of recommendation and name of reference persons (optional)
The application shall be sent electronically as pdf or zipped documents. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.
If any material is not available electronically or cannot be transferred to pdf format, the material can be sent as a hard copy to Registrar. The applicants name and the reference number (2009/175) must be written on the first page of the application.
