Earthquake!!!!!

Earthquake means shaking and vibration at the surface of the earth resulting from underground movement along a fault plane of from volcanic activity. It’s very common natural disaster throughout the world. It usually lasts for a few seconds to a minute. The most common measure of earthquake size is the Richter's magnitude (M).

Although Bangladesh is extremely vulnerable to seismic activity, the nature and the level of this activity is yet to be defined. In Bangladesh complete earthquake monitoring facilities are not available. The Meteorological Department of Bangladesh established a seismic observatory at Chittagong in 1954. This remains the only observatory in the country. Lack of awareness and lack of proper steps there are many human beings are died. And for this issue Dhaka is in serious zone but it’s not yet listed in the primary earthquake zone in the region. According to many experts one thing is quite simple that is Dhaka got zero points in the main categories. Thickness of buildings, poor quality of
construction, poor socio-economic condition of people and above all poor response management were the main negative factors for Dhaka when the survey was done in 1998. All these put together Dhaka was on the top along with Tehran as the most vulnerable cities when it comes to earthquake in the world. But the situation is being changed than before. Now we are more aware about this disaster and government is taking various kinds of steps to recover the damages after earthquake. But it is not enough. Every month, every year in Bangladesh particularly in Dhaka city there are many multi storied building is being made with corruption and lacking of proper investigation. But actually this is one of the main reasons for earthquake. Many buildings are being made without any soil tests, without following any legal way.


We are now living in a techno age. And now the world is very much advance with the touch of technology, human brilliancy, lots of tools, lots of research but why we will keep us behind this? We have to be more aware on that matter. In Bangladesh, there are many news are being listed as newspaper’s headlines but where is about ‘Earthquake’? When it occurs then tomorrow some small piece of news, small amount of editorial publish. But most of the time we should cover this kinds of natural disaster because we are going to be developed otherwise we have to calculate huge amount of destructive incident like earthquake. In our Bangladesh there are many plans to reduce the risks of lives from earthquake.   But such kinds of organizations are not well equipped. But at this time Bangladesh Army has a contingency plan, Bangladesh Fire Brigade and Civil Defence Directorate has a contingency plan, Titas Gas has a contingency plan, WASA has a plan but all these organisations do not have proper equipment. That's why the ministry has requested for a list of equipment from them. I don't know whether enough funds would be granted to buy the equipment, but I hope the government will take some initiative to arrange the fund.

Recently there are many earthquake attacked Dhaka city. And there are some future notice has been revealed that Dhaka can be victim for another numbers of earthquakes. So we should be prepared for this. There are many NGO are working for making awareness among the people with the help of government. It’s too late to become prepare. So as soon as possible we have to fix all the lacking. We should broadcast many programs on TV, Radio, Internet, Newspaper to make people aware. And also we should make some strict policy for many real estates company to make buildings and for them there is a necessity of investigation. We don’t want to see a child is died, a mother and a child even a whole family is died on any kinds of natural disaster. We don’t want to cry anymore. We haven’t anything without wall behind us. We should be more conscious as a social responsible person. We have to gain our rights to live, to eat properly. We should expect some better initiatives from governments and from various kinds of social organization. Earthquake is a natural disaster. So it is hard to give it up but we don’t want to look a man is died. We want to reduce the destruction during earthquake. If we can open our eyes so that the world can get another baby’s smiling face without any fear of their life.
