High risks on highways
« on: October 20, 2010, 12:53:56 AM »
A research of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) has identified 219 "black spots" on ten major highways where every year hundreds of people die in frequent accidents due to engineering and design faults. These spots are located on Dhaka-Chittagong, Dhaka-Sylhet, Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Tangail-Jamalpur, Dhaka-Aricha, Nagarbari-Banglabandha, Nagarbari-Rajshahi, Daulatdia-Jhenidah-Khulna, Dhaka-Mawa-Barisal highways and Jamuna Bridge Approach Road. Most of the "black spots" fall in intersections, roundabouts, junctions and turnings on the highways. The Accident Research Institute (ARI) of Buet has also found that the faults occur as the responsible authorities don't follow the rules of road safety audit during road construction. As many as 2,349 people were killed in 2,515 accidents at those spots from 1998 to 2007.

In order to reduce the high risks on high ways, mass awareness is required and our mentality should be modified. We, Bangladeshis, care for reaching the destination by overtaking any vehicle but we hardly try to reach the goal of development by overtaking other developing or developed countries.

The rash bus drivers always prefer overtaking other vehicles because the owner od the bus cares more about trips than safety of the passengers.

Our sense of time is only reflected in reaching the destination even at the cost of our lives. But we don't care how many days a file is left untouched on the desk or how long a patient is suffering with pain in bed but the duty doctor is busy with chatting with his friend.

To reduce high risks on high ways, there should be much postering and tv programmes highlighting the pains of the road accident victims. The awareness should be created in the mind of the drivers and the owners of the vehicles. Profit does not necessarily always means monetary gains but the smiling face of the passengers when they reach their destination safe and sound

I think, when a person learns how to drive, they should be made aware of these issues. In driving course the dangers of rash driving should be included along with some real life situations. It might motivate the drivers to be careful while driving
