We all feel anxious from time to time. But when those feelings of anxiety are so overpowering that they take complete control of your life, it's time you do something about it.

Here are some simple tips that might help:

- When you're anxious you tend to take faster and shorter breaths. This will only worsen that feeling of anxiety. Instead, make a conscious effort to take slow, deep breaths. Within minutes you will feel yourself calming down. In fact, make it it a habit to regularly do breathing exercises at least twice a day.

- Sometimes things aren't as bad as you imagine them to be. It's okay to feel anxious about something. But don't let it control you. If you're in doubt, why not check with someone you trust? A judgment from someone else might just alleviate your anxiety by showing you a different perspective.

- When you get thoughts that make you anxious, sit down and ask yourself why they do so? Pinpoint on the exact thing that is making you feel this way and ask yourself if it is worth it. Accept that feeling but don't let it bog you down. face it and fight it.

- Use a distraction technique to shift your thoughts. Think of something (or someone) that you can focus your attention on and then stick to that.

- Surround yourself with positive quotes and people as much as you can. You don't want people who bring you down with their own negativity and problems.

- Does anything in your routine trigger off your anxiety? Find out what it is and then work on changing that. Put your mind on activities that mean something and which don't upset you.
