peaking at the inauguration of the ‘5th Bangladesh Book Fair’ at Rabindra Sadan in Kolkata, Noor said: “Initially, publishers in West Bengal used to complain their books are victims of piracy in Bangladesh. Bangladesh publishers are now making similar complaints.”

Basu said the West Bengal government is serious about curbing the menace. “Our government has recently brought a tough law to curb the menace.”

He said piracy was a 'fact of life' across the world but it needed to be controlled.

"Our government and that of Bangladesh need to fight this menace together. But it is not something you can fight with law-enforcers alone. You need to create popular awareness to fight piracy," he added.

Bangladesh's State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki said the publishing industry in both Bangladesh and West Bengal was destined to grow.

"The Bengali population is growing and we both have a young population. So it is important to create a love for books among our new generation," she said.

Bangla Academy Director General Shamsuzzaman Khan said book fairs were crucial to develop the language.

"It is only through book fairs that we can create mutual awareness. The Bangladesh book fair has helped create an awareness of our progress in language and literature," he said.

Forty-seven Bangladesh publishers have participated in the fair in Calcutta this year – almost double the number compared to last year.
