Italian holidays: autumn in Lombardy
Autumn is the perfect season for a city break in one of the most delightful regions in Italy, with nature, art, cultural treasures and charming towns. From Como to Mantua, here’s a travel guide for a trip to Lombardy
Autumn is the perfect season to enjoy the broad variety of delights Lombardy has to offer. As the locals drift back from their summer watering holes they are greeted with a spectacular welcome in both town and country.
Cities burst into life, staging countless events showcasing the arts, theatre, music, fashion and fine regional food and wine. The crisper air ensures the skies are clear and blue as far as the eye can see and the mountains seem close enough to touch.
Out in the countryside, the hills and forests are lit up with a blaze of gold, orange, yellow and red, turning the most modest hike or bike ride into a multicoloured adventure. Even a lazy stroll through one of the countless medieval villages becomes an opportunity to entertain the senses.
The options for a fabulous autumn vacation are boundless here. For starters, the region is home to 11 Unesco world heritage sites as well as some of Italy’s most enchanting villages.
The Piazza Vecchia, overlooked by 12th-century Torre Civica belltower, is at the heart of the city of Bergamo
For Stendhal, Bergamo was the most beautiful place on earth. The cluster of palaces, towers and domes is enclosed by over 5km of city walls, begun in 1561 when the town belonged to the Republic of Venice and still perfectly preserved to this day.
At its heart, Piazza Vecchia is the epitome of the Renaissance square, and one of Le Corbusier’s favourites. Facing the white porticoed Palazzo Nuovo are two exquisite medieval palaces: the Palazzo della Ragione and the Palazzo del Podestà through which visitors can access the Torre del Campanone, the massive bell tower that offers sweeping views over the town to the mountains.
Como offers the twin attractions of a charming historic centre and stunning lakeside location. Inside the formidable walls, the old town presents a fascinating array of architectural styles from the late gothic facade of the Duomo (cathedral) to the polychrome marble Broletto (town hall) of 1215, the Romanesque basilica and the 1930s rationalism of Terragni.
The town has been a centre of the silk industry since the 15th century. The Silk Museum illustrates the entire process from silkworms to finished products and the shops are full of scarves and ties at a fraction of the cost of the international boutiques.
