Investors remain 'indecisive, watchful'
« on: August 16, 2016, 02:43:49 PM »
The Dhaka bourse Sunday ended flat amid mixed performance of the major sectors.

The market closed the Thursday's session with a healthy turnover and a similar enthusiasm was observed during the Sunday's starting session.

But at the end of the day's session, the turnover declined significantly amidst sluggish participation from the investors on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE).

According to some of the market insiders, 'indecisiveness' and 'watchful' stance among the investors resulted into flat closing after daylong ups and down.

At the end of the day's session, the DSE broad index closed at 4577.08 points with a gain of 2.72 points.

The DSE Shariah index DSES lost 1.44 points to close at 1122.02 points, whereas the blue chip index DS30 shed 4.62 points to close at 1776.39 points.

"The buyers attention was mostly grasped by the service, tannery and ceramic sector while mutual fund, financial institution and travel sector witnessed selling-offs," said a market commentary of the International Leasing Securities.

"The large-cap sectors showed mixed performances. The power sector was the highest gainer followed by food & allied, pharmaceuticals and banks," said the BRAC EPL.

At the end of the session, the turnover stood at above Tk 3.35 billion which is 33 per cent less than the turnover of the previous session.

Of 324 issues traded, 124 advanced, 143 declined and 57 were unchanged.

The major sectors which normally contribute to the market turnover failed to perform better on the premier bourse Sunday.

Among the major sectors based on the market capitalisation, service advanced 1.0 per cent, tannery 0.6 per cent, ceramic 0.6 per cent, and textile 0.5 per cent.

Among the losing sectors, paper & printing lost 2.6 per cent, mutual fund 0.9 per cent, financial institution 0.8 per cent, engineering 0.6 per cent and telecommunication 0.4 per cent.

The day's top 10 gainers witnessed price hikes ranging 5.07 per cent to 9.43 per cent.

Among the companies, the Beach Hatchery was the number one gainer with a rise of 9.43 per cent to close at Tk 11.60.

On the other hand, the Meghna Pet Industries was the worst loser with a loss of 9.67 per cent to close at Tk 8.40.

The multinational companies Sunday witnessed marginal rise amid flat movement of the market.

Among the companies, the market price of Glaxo SmithKline rose 4.34 per cent to close at Tk 1626.90 and Marico Bangladesh 0.57 per cent to close at Tk 1267.

The investors' attention was mainly concentrated on engineering which contributed 21.2 per cent to market turnover followed by pharmaceuticals & chemicals 13.3 per cent and textile 13.0 per cent.

Envoy Textiles topped the volume chart with a turnover of Tk 104 million followed by Shahjibazar Power Company Tk 100 million, MJL Bangladesh Tk 94 million, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation Tk 92 million, BSRM Tk 88 million and Aman Feed Tk 77 million.
