Towards building a modern economy
« on: April 25, 2018, 03:13:11 PM »
Bangladesh has achieved tremendous success in the realm of education, economic development, poverty alleviation, food security, healthcare, and much more. And the milestones we have achieved in only a little less than five decades since independence make us feel proud as a nation.

But just as these one-of-a-kind success stories should be told, we believe it is also important to take cognisance of the challenges that need to be overcome for a more egalitarian society. These include protecting the rights of our migrants, building a more responsible financial sector, taking steps to diversify our export basket and ensuring smooth graduation out of the LDC category. The road ahead is long and the journey will not be an easy one.

The idea behind this segment of the supplement is rooted in the aspirations of Bangladesh to become a middle-income country and its commitment to implement the SDGs as part of the 2030 Agenda.

This issue, Towards Building a Modern Economy, is the third instalment of our 216-page special supplement on the occasion of The Daily Star's 27th anniversary.

We would like to thank all the writers, who are experts, practitioners, researchers, eminent economists, scholars and academics, for enriching this issue with very insightful and thoughtful articles. We are grateful to all of them.

We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to our readers and patrons whose endless support and dedication keep us going.

Be sure to follow up on the penultimate installment of this special supplement titled Rethinking Urban Spaces: Dhaka and Beyond which comes out on February 22.
