AN EXAMPLE WITH FUSED ELECTRIC BULB
The electric supply in our locality was erratic. The voltage fluctuation was too much. Within months I gathered so many electric bulbs, all fused; those were nothing but useless waste material at home. I gave one bulb each to my students in the class and gave an assignment. Within a week's time they had to come forward with ANY useful productive work they could think of using the fused bulb. The response was wonderful.
You carefully examine the bulb and make a list of such uses that can be made under different headings; then we shall compare the list with others.
We may consider it to be a type of game; fix the time limit and give marks.
Different fields of uses are :1. Physics
2. Chemistry
3. Life Science
4. Experiments and Demonstration
5. Work Experience (SUPW)
6. Other Purposes
USES OF FUSED ELECTRIC BULBS PERTAINING TO DIFFERENT FIELDS OF STUDY :
AS SUGGESTED BY PARTICIPANTS
I. PHYSICS
1. Idea/knowledge of wattage, voltage, current (amperage).
2. Study of physical properties - brittle, malleable, ductile.
3. Examples of (seven) different matals and alloys and their properties.
4. As a convex lens/magnifying glass (by filling the glass envelop with water).
5. Thermionic emission/evaporation of metal by heat (why does the lighting by a bulb gradually decrease and innerside of the glass envelop gets a form of coating).
6 .........................................................
II.
CHEMISTRY1. Oxidation at high temperature (purpose of the glass envelop; why does a lighted filament get fused if exposed to air).
80
2. Use of the thick wire (connecting the filament) for flame test.
3. Glass-envelop used as a round bottom flask.
4. As a component of distillation apparatus.
5. Broken glass envelop used as a watch glass.
6. For preparing a wash -bottle.
7. For preparing a boiling point apparatus.
8. As a gas preparing apparatus.
9.........................................
III.
LIFE SCIENCE1. Specimen jar.
2. Petri dish.
3. Simple-microscope/magnifying glass.
4.........................................
IV.
FOR EXPERIMENTS AND DEMONSTRATIONS
1. The bulb explodes while breaks (explain the reason).
2. To show thermal expansions of glass vessel and of liquid.
3. To show convection of heat in liquid.
4. To show types of equilibrium of a body (stable, unstable and neutral).
5. To show optical properties - opaque and transparent.
6. To light the bulb so that the filament is in contact with air. Observe and explain why the filament becomes fragile.
