Open Call for Mining Challenge Proposals
« on: July 12, 2018, 04:37:23 PM »
One of the secret ingredients behind the success of the International Conference on Mining Software Repositories (MSR) is its annual Mining Challenge, in which MSR participants can showcase their techniques, tools and creativity on a common data set. In true MSR fashion, this data set is a “real” data set contributed by researchers in the community, solicited through an open call.

There are many benefits of sharing a data set for the MSR Mining Challenge. The selected challenge proposal explaining the data set will appear in the MSR 2019 proceedings, and the challenge papers using the data set will be required to cite the challenge proposal or an existing paper of the researchers about the selected data set. Furthermore, the authors of the data set will become the official 2019 Mining Challenge Chairs, responsible for the reviewing process (e.g., composing a Challenge PC, managing the submissions and review assignments, etc.). Finally, it is not uncommon for challenge data sets to feature in MSR and other publications well after the conference is finished!

If you would like to compete for a chance to have your data set featured in the 2019 MSR Mining Challenge and all the benefits that come with it, please submit a 1-page proposal with up to 3 pages of appendix at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=msr2019, containing the following information:

Title of data set.
  • What does your data set contain?
  • How large is it?
  • How accessible is it and how can the data be obtained?
  • How representative is it?
  • Does it require specialized tools to mine it?
  • What would challenge participants need to work with the data set?
  • What kind of questions do you expect challenge participants to answer?
  • A link to a small sample of the data (e.g., via dropbox, github, etc.).

The above submissions should use the IEEE Conference Proceedings template (https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html). LaTEX users should use \documentclass[10pt,conference]{IEEEtran} (without any other option). Submissions will be examined and discussed by the MSR 2019 PC chairs, General Chair, and potentially steering committee members in case of conflicts of interest.

Once the winning proposal will be selected, its authors will become the MSR 2019 Challenge Chairs and will be responsible for choosing the MSR 2019 Mining Challenge program committee. The major deadline for this is the 15th of September 2018, at which time the Challenge CFP along with the PC will be announced, and the full challenge data set will be publicly released. By making the challenge data set available by early fall, we hope that many student teams will be able to use the challenge data set for their graduate class projects.

Timeline:
  • Deadline for proposals: August 3rd, 2018
  • Proposal accepted and all submitters notified: August 15th, 2018
  • Challenge CFP: September 15th, 2018
  • Challenge PC formed: September 15th, 2018
  • Challenge data made available: September 15th, 2018
  • Challenge papers deadline: Feb 10th, 2019 (tentative)

MSR 2019 Organization/Proposal Reviewers:
General Chair: Margaret-Anne (Peggy) Storey, University of Victoria
PC Co-Chair: Bram Adams, Polytechnique Montreal
PC Co-Chair: Sonia Haiduc, Florida State University

The Mining Software Repositories (MSR) conference is the premier conference for data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in software engineering. The goal of the conference is to improve software engineering practices by uncovering interesting and actionable information about software systems and projects using the vast amounts of software data such as source control systems, defect tracking systems, code review repositories, archived communications between project personnel, question-and-answer sites, CI build servers, and run-time telemetry. Mining this information can help to understand software development and evolution, software users, and runtime behavior; support the maintenance of software systems; improve software design/reuse; empirically validate novel ideas and techniques; support predictions about software development; and exploit this knowledge in planning future development.

The goal of this two-day international conference is to advance the science and practice of software engineering with data-driven techniques. The 17th International Conference on Mining Software Repositories is co-located with ICSE 2020 in Seoul, South Korea, and will be held on May 25-26, 2020.

The important dates for the Technical Track papers are:

Abstract deadline: Thursday January 9, 2020, 23:59 AOE
Papers deadline: Thursday January 16, 2020, 23:59 AOE (No deadline extension or grace periods will be provided. Please plan accordingly)
Author Response Period: February 18 - 21, 2020
Author Notification: Monday March 2, 2020
Camera Ready: Monday March 16, 2020, 23:59 AOE
Please see the Call for Papers for all the details.
