ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak on Tuesday said one million jobs were created in the ICT (Information Communication Technology) sector in the last 10 years.

"By 2021 this number will reach two million," he said, while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the three-day 15th BASIS SoftExpo 2019, organized by Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) at International Convention City Bashundhara, Dhaka.

Claiming the government to be "keen" on developing the sector, the state minister added: "Under the Info-Sarker Project 3, the government is creating skilled manpower, which will help to train 600,000 people."

Palak furthered that expansion of this SoftExpo indicates how much the sector has developed over past year. "Like developed countries, we are now using apps and drone technology to organize international standard events."

Speaking at the event, BASIS President Syed Almas Kabir,  said: "We welcome everyone to participate and visit this fair, because only then can they realize how much progress we have made.

"This year's expo is even bigger than the previous year. For the development of the sector, we need infrastructure facilities and skilled man power—which we are striving for continuously," he added.

BASIS Senior Vice President and Convener of SoftExpo 2019 Farhana A Rahman gave the welcoming speech.

The slogan for this year’s SoftExpo is "Technology for Prosperity".

BASIS and the ICT Division are jointly organizing the event. Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance Project (LICT) and Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) are partners of the Industry 4.0 Zone and Experience Zone.

According to the organizers, more than 250 national and international IT companies are displaying their products and services in this year’s mega exposition.
