Anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities of ethanolic extract of gynura nepalensis (leaf)
AbstractObjective: The present communication attempts to evaluate the Anti-inflammatory and Analgesic
activities of ethanoic extract of Gynura Nepalensis (leaf) belongs to the family: Asteraceae, which is
widely distributed in India.
Methods: Ethanolic extract of Gynura Nepalensis (leaf) at doses of 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg were tested
for their anti-inflammatory activity against Carrageenan induced paw edema & Xylene-Induced Ear
Edema test in rats and analgesic activity was tested against Formalin-induced Paw licking test & acetic
acid induced writhing (in mice) models and the two phases of formalin induced paw licking models of
pain.
Results: The results indicate that the ethanoic extracts at the doses of 250 and 500mg/kg body weight
significantly inhibited, the carrageenan induced paw edema and Xylene-induced ear edema models of
inflammation, similarly the extract at the doses of 250 and 500mg/kg significantly inhibited the acetic
acid induced writhing (in mice) models and the two phases of formalin induced paw licking models of
pain.
Conclusion: This study confirms that the ethanoic extract of Gynura Nepalensis has good analgesic and
anti-inflammatory property. Further studies are necessary to isolate the compounds from the ethanoic
extract of Gynura Nepalensis responsible for the activity.
