WhatsApp

Registered users: 1600 million


Launching in 2009, WhatsApp started life as an instant messenger app and has since gone to become the number one video calling/ IM app in the world. WhatsApp has close to 2 billion registered users and there are no signs indicating a slow down for the green giants.

Facebook Messenger

Registered users: 1300 million

Started as a standalone messenger app, Facebook Messenger was independent from the Facebook app and browser and was meant to compete with the likes of WhatsApp and Skype. And compete it did, amassing around 1.5 billion people while it was at it.

WeChat

Registered users: 1112 million


The growth of WeChat, as an all-in-one platform is a thing to behold but it has grown exponentially as one of the most prominent IM and video calling apps in China. Roughly 900 million users out of the 1112 million people are from China.

QQ Mobile

Registered users: 823 million

Tencent Mobile, one of the largest tech conglomerates in the world devised QQ Mobile in a bid to capture the Chinese market. While the app expanded to Android and iOS in only 2013, it has been around longer than most with the apps earliest iteration, Tencent QQ, being launched in 1999.
