Cesare Lombroso:the godfather of criminal anthropology

Cesare Lombroso (1835–1909), physician and psychiatrist, is known outside Italy mainly as the founder of criminology. He is usually remembered for shifting the focus of legal thinking from crime to the criminal; for his claim that there existed a ‘born criminal’, and his theory on the constitutional and hereditary roots of criminal conduct and ‘criminal types’. His theories have heavily influenced developments in criminology throughout both Europe and the USA. The translation in English-language provides readers with key extracts from various editions of his classic work, L’uomo delinquent (Criminal Man). (Beccalossi, 2008)

Since then this new school, arising in Italy, has extended over the whole world and has continued to win followers. It has led to a progressive continuation of all the investigations hitherto made in the field of the exact sciences in their application to penal law and sociology and it has grown to be the science of the criminal man. In this respect it is indeed not the creation of a single individual, yet it is so intimately connected with the name of Lombroso that no one can dispute his right to be considered the godfather of criminal anthropology. (Albrecht, 1910)
