Although my name is not enlisted, but I had been given the topic, Character Analysis of Major Callender from "A Passage to India". Instead of starting a new thread I submit my assignment as a reply to the following post. (Word file sent as an attached document)

I wish you could just record silence and then play it on loudspeakers on full blast to make the whole room quiet.

                                                                                 Cyril Fielding

The character of Fielding in the novel "A passage to India" is clearly the most associated with Forster himself. Even he plays a crucial role in this novel. He is  very successful to make a relationship with native Indians. That's why Fielding comes closer to Aziz and  friendship relation begins between the two. Even Fielding thinks that their friendship will be restored. Because he does not think any difference between the English and the Indians on the basis of race and culture. However, among the English , Fielding is liberal and cordial because Dr. Aziz (Muslem) and Professor Godbole(Hindu) are cordially treated by Fielding.Yet as a teacher he was very helpful who always extends his helping hands to the students those who are not particular of their class. Finally we can say that as an  Englishman he is a real partisan because E.M. Forster expressed himself through him.

                               Anglo-Indians Folk

The Anglo-Indian’s in A Passage to India  stress the Irresponsibility and volatility of Indians, thereby justifying the need for British rule. They fear of Indian sensuality and simultaneous, lascivious, preoccupation with polygamy. The Angl- Indian clash seems invetable . Turtan automatically relegates all Indians to the servant class and determined to prevent her culture from being ‘adulterated’ by that of Indian. European women were frequently relaxed relationships existing between British and Indians. The  superintendent of police is accused of adultery with Miss Derek, and is divorced by his wife.  As one of the Indians put it, would probably blame the Indian climate for this domestic. Forster’s portrayal the occasional  outbursts of  irrational anger , especially in the case of the Anglo- Indian women and also man.

Vladimir

Vladmir is one of the two tramps who are waiting for Godot in the play of the same name. He is older than Estragon. He is more stoutly built. He is affectionate and protective towards Estragon. He seems to be more mature and sober in nature than the impulsive and temperamental Estragon. He seems to take waiting more philosophically than his friend. It is he who has conducted negotiations with Godot, and it is to him the messages of Godot are addressed. Vladimir is patient by nature. We find him arguing painstaking with Estragon to convince him that they are waiting for Godot at right time and the right place. Of the two tramps, Vladimir thinks more and therefore, his anguish is intellectual. Hi lives according to the rationalist principle which urges him to be reasonable. Thus Vladimir is the more practical of the two.

Name : Shamima Nasrin
ID : 072-10-360
Topic : Mr. Callendar

Mr. Callendar

Mr. Callendar is a minor character of the novel “A passage to India”  In the beginning of the novel, forester is introduced us about this character. He is working as a civil surgeon at the minto Hospital of the city Chandrapore. He is an exceptionally intolerant and bad-tempered man. Through out the novel, he takes advantages in several times from his poor assistant Dr. Aziz. As a superior, he calls Aziz in any time (day or night) then leaves to the club from the bang low without keeping any massage/note. Callendar totally treats him as cruelas possible. He feels proud and suspicious for his professional talents and social position. As a Englishman, he has not shown positive reaction against Indians and against English like fielding, who side with the Indians. Finally, I can say from my point of view that major Callendar is not a well-behaved or good hearted person and most of time he has shown Anglo-English attitudes towards Indian natives.

Assignment on God bole’s Song
« Reply #6 on: April 19, 2010, 12:19:16 PM »
God bole’s Song

Mr. Fiddling a arranged tea party in the chapter-7 on part-1 (Mosque). In this party Mr. Aziz, Professor God bole, Miss Quested and Mrs. Moore Came by invitation of Mr. Fiddling. Mr. God bole sung a song in this party. The voice of singer was raised up and vocal broken down like as a mistuned Kasor. It was seemed that a chorus of harsh song. It was the illusion of a western melody. The Lyric of that music had faded out with noise of his sound. It was the song of an irritation bird. Only some servants understood it. They began to whisper with each other. Servants was enjoyed that song and heard it with most concentrate. It was a religious song which bearded the meaning of emotion. He called Sri Krishna with his song. Though he knew that Krishna not response and don’t come but he called him with deep love and he knew the difference of relations between the God and follower continued to forever. Through this song we know that Indian people are emotional and they pray to a non-respondent God. Other hand British or Christian are not emotional. They realized the situation and faith in instant transaction.

Mohammad Latif

Mohammad Latif who lives on Hamidullah's genoresity. He is not a servant but which position he occupies is not of an equal. He is a gentle, happy and dishonest old man. He does not speak unnessary. In his life he has never done any work. His wife lives some hundred of miles away from him. He does not visit his wife due to the railway ticket. So, we can that Latif is indifferent about his life.

                                                                                Mau

“A Passage to India” is a remarkable literary work of Edward Morgan Forster where he has portrayed culture as one of the central themes in this novel. He has focused two important aspects of this novel by describing the independent Hindu state Mau. Firstly, Forster has symbolically represented the muddle conditions of India as well as the characteristics of Indian people through the description of the Mau “its pillars and vaulting could scarcely be seen behind coloured rags”, “chandeliers of opaque pink glass, and murky photographs framed crookedly”. Secondly, he has exposed the muddle of religion. We find that the religious festival, on the occasion of Krishna’s birth at Mau, is disorderly represented. “God is love” is written as “God si love” which shows the ultimate failure of the fundamental philosophy of Hinduism of the oneness in all living things.
Finally, as a modern writer, E.M Forster has symbolically represented the cultural theme through the aesthetic description of the Indian architectures (Masque, Cave and Temple).

Estragon
Estragon, one of the two protagonists is a strange creation of Samuel Beckett in the play “Waiting for Godot” who is a bum and sleeps in a ditch where he is beaten each night. Vladimir calls him Gogo. Ha has no memory, forgets everything what is immediately said to him, and relies on Vladimir to remember for him. Estragon is annoyed and always wants to leave Vladimir but he cannot survive without his help. He has been compared to a body without a mind. Estragon says “do not let’s do anything” this line is thematically very important in this play. It conveys that if you never act, you can never act wrong, and if you never choose, you can never choose incorrectly. Most of the time Estragon behaves like child, if he is asked a question he replies another answer, such as when Vladimir asks: “ Do you remember the Gospels? Estragon tells him about the colored maps of the Holy Land and that he planned to honeymoon by the Dead Sea, it is his short-term memory. How funny this character is!

Mrs. Moore
Mrs. Moore was a widow and the mother of the City Magistrate Ronny Heaslop. She had come from England to India for the wedding purpose of Ronny and miss Adela Quested. She was a good hearted woman and  also very friendly towards her child. She was very devoted person and most of the time she liked to think about God. She was interested to know about India and Indian’s too, even though he other English people except Adela disliked the natives. Unlike the others she was not very rough in speaking about natives. She liked speaking the truth, but not to the extent which would be against her son. She disagreed with the others behavior of bad practice people who broke their promise also were no liked by her. She has human limitation and her last wish was to make her children shattle in their life.

Theatre of the Absurd
Theatre of the Absurd is a drama without a plot, without characters, and without dialogue in the conversational sense. The main action relates in showing the absurdity of man’s existence. This drama exposes soul’s agony and meaninglessness of life. Absurd theatre relies heavily on dream and fantasy. The theatre of Absurd is one of the ways of facing up to a universe that has lost faith in God  and has lost it’s meaning and purpose. It plays the role of satirical and criticizes  a society that is petty and dishonest, such a theater in involved in the relatively few problems that remain life, death, isolation and communication. In such a theatre language is devalued. The drama speaks to a deeper level of the audience’s mind. We find it very difficult to identify ourselves with the characters in Absurd drama. The theatre of the Absurd presents anxiety, despair and a sense of loss at the disappearance of solutions, illusions, and purposefulness. Thus absurd drama becomes a kind of modern mystical experience.

Lucky
Lucky is the absolutely subservient slave of Pozzo. He is an inarticulate character the play Waiting for Godot . He speaks only once in the play and it is a result of Pozzo's order. Pozzo and Lucky had been together for sixty years .He remains completely faithful to to Pozzo. He has always been the intellectually superior. Pozzo credits him with having given him all the culture refinement and ability to reason that he possesses. Pozzo controls him by means of an extremely long rope which he jerks and tug if Lucky is the least bit slow. In second act when Pozzo   has iexplicably gone blind and needs to be led by Lucky rather than driving as he had done before .
Above all the discussion it comes clear that Lucky is a faithful slave of Pozzo,he bears so many good qualities.

Cave Incident
Cave is situated between Mosque and Temple which represents all the strangeness of nature. These caves are the oldest creations of the nature than anything else in the world. They symbolize the nothingness and emptiness. Mr.Aziz, Mrs. Moore and Miss Adela Quested have a experiment of Marabar Caves. When Mrs. Moore feels tired of climbing the hills, Mr. Aziz and Adela with the guide begin the climbing. In the cave Mrs. Moore feels the reality of life, the weakness of her life is shown vividly, she realizes the failures of her life. And Miss Adela finds the truth of relation with Ronny. Though they suppose to be united but there is far space between them. When Aziz leaves Adela with guide for a smoke, she misleads in the wrong way. Adela is very tired of the atmosphere which makes her loneliness. Without Aziz she leaves the caves and then it conveys a bad news that she falsely accuses Aziz of attempting to rape her in the marabar caves. These are the incidents of marabar caves.
