Waiting for Godot    is a world famous absurd drama, written by Samuel Beckett. ''Godot ''is the most noteworthy and significant character of it, though we find no presence of him (for once!) in this play. Beckett himself doesn't make it clear who, which or what is 'Godot' (?) So, we have liberty to imagine him (G) with our own way. During giving an interview in television Beckett once says, '' Godot is in no sense a God. '' May be, 'Godot' indicates a hope for good future or the 'waiting of human being ''for a 'savior' .There is also somebody who believes that 'Godot' symbolizes the uncertainty of getting something in life. Moreover,'Godot ' often seems to us as the waiting for decay or death. Again. 'Godot ' can be defined as simply an idealization of Vladimir's own way of life. Anyway, we can sum up 'Godot ' as the sign of something pure, innocent, a new beginning for humanity and a savior who takes away all the dark, dirt and sufferings of the humanity. Like Vladimir and Estragon we are all waiting for a 'Godot' or a 'happy new beginning".

Assignment on Godbole's Song
« Reply #16 on: April 20, 2010, 05:56:50 PM »
Godbole’s Song

Mr. Fielding arranged a tea party in the chapter-7 on part-1 (Mosque). In this party Mr. Aziz, professor Godbole, Miss Quested and Mrs. Moore Came by invitation of Mr. Fielding. Mr. Godbole sung a song in this party. The voice of singer was raised up and vocal broken down like as a mistuned kashor. It was seemed that a chorus of harsh song. It was the illusion of a western melody. The Lyric of that music had faded out with noise of his sound. It was the song of an irritation bird. Only some servants understood it. They began to whisper with each other. Servants was enjoyed that song and heard it with most concentrate. It was a religious song which bearded the meaning of emotion. He called Sri Krishna with his song. Though he knew that Krishna not response and don’t come but he called him with deep love and he knew the difference of relations between the God and follower continued to forever. Through this song we know that Indian people are emotional and they pray to a non-respondent God. Other hand British or Christian are not emotional. They realized the situation and faith in instant transaction.

Pozzo, the name reflects a power. In this play, he does power play character. He does the play with another character, Lucky. Pozzo impresses us as the personification of Raw Power. The out look of Pozzo, he wears a hat, and a wisp in his hand. Sympathetic events happened but, he does not have any change in characteristic to his slave, Lucky. Pozzo’s concept of time modern “practical” culture is based on mechanical astronomical time.

                                                                                          Dr. Aziz

Dr. Aziz is a young Muslim Doctor working in an English Hospital at Chandrapore. He is eager to please others. He is critical of the purdah. He is the hero of this novel . He is a nationalist. He comes of a prosperous Muslim family and has studied in London . He is handsome and is and is a competent doctor. Dr. Aziz is emotion personified. He had very great affection for his wife but now she has died leaving three small children behind. He is very sad and carries her photograph with him.He is impulsive and sensitive . Aziz is emotional by temperament and always full of enthusiasm. He is revengeful upon the English. In the words of G.M White , Aziz is the most human, most believable of all Forster's  characters.

Professor Godbole

Professor Godbole was a teacher of philosophy in the government college. Later he becomes the minister of Hindu state of Mau. He was polite, showed respect to the Britishers, & was an introvert. He valued friendship & helped Aziz to secure the job of a medical chief of the state. He spent most of his time in prayers & celebration of Hindu festival. He preferred Muslims to Englishman. But he is not a true delineation of the Hindu character because he had no Hindu friends who stay with him. As a result Godbole was introduced not as a true representative of Hindu culture but as a caricature.

                                                                      Miss Adela Quested

Miss Adela Quested as mentioned in A Passage to India is an English girl who came to India with Mrs. Moore to meet her fiancé, Ronny Heaslop. Adela possessed plain and unattractive look. She was young and amiable but lacked that charm of youth. She faces a strange kind of hallucination in the caves, and accuses Aziz of making some insulting advances towards her. Later on, she withdraws her charges. Indian climate is very much telling upon her. It is under this troubled mental state that she loses sense of right and wrong evil overcomes her. Later on, the really good of her prevails, and her behaviour rests on cold justice and honesty. She, however, feels no passion of love for those whom she was wronged. She is deserted by all Englishman except Mr. Fielding. She is described by the author as “a lumpy, ordinary sort of girl” having real intrinsic decency. She becomes a symbol of the conflict between the two races.

                                                                                 BRIDGE PARTY

In the Bridge Party that takes place at the start of the novel, the reader is introduced to some of these prejudices and cultural misunderstandings that are formed with the fusion of these two divergent cultures. The bridge party was a miserable affair. The Indian guests arrived at the bridge party before time but they kept to themselves. Turton came late and surveyed the gathering which was composed of Hindus Muslims and Parsees. There have been many events in the novel that illustrates this social difference between the British and the Indians. For instance, the Bridge Party can serve as an example of this lack of unity. “Would she like a Bridge Party? He explained to her what that was-not the game, but a party to bridge the gulf between Eastand West; Even though the Bridge Party was to serve as an “ice breaker” between the East and the West, it just so happened that its intention was not filled.

                                                                              Theater of Absurd

A form of drama that emphasizes the absurdity of human existence by employing disjointed repetitious and meaningless dialogue, purposeless and confusing situations and Plots that lack realistic or logical development. The characters in absurd drama are lost and floating in an incomprehensible universes and they abandon rational devices and discursive thought because these approaches are inadequate. Despite its reputations for language , much of the dialogue in absurdest play is naturalistic .Theater of the Absurd distinctive Language frequently gain a certain phonetic rhythmical almost musical quality. The Moments when characters resort to non crease language or chichis when appears to have lost their denotative function. At last we can say that absurd drama is well combination of meaningless dialogue, purposes and confusing situation when emphasizes the absurdity of human existence...

"The first meeting of Mrs. Moore and Dr. Aziz"

In a peaceful moonlight night Aziz meets and talks with Mrs. Moore in the Mosque. Aziz who is still shouldering under recent insults from the British, speaks to her sharply but she replies in a friendly manner. He shouts to her to stop and not to move any furthers without taking off her shoes. But Mrs. Moore  she has done so already. She informs him that she has newly arrived to know India as well as to see her son who is the city Magistrate of Chandrapore. In the darkness of the Mosque when he first hears the voice of Mrs. Moore, he is deceived into thinking that she is young, and when he finds that she is old, he receives a shock. Then they mention their respective families, and Aziz finding her sympathetic complains in strong words about the humiliations inflicted upon him that evening by his superior, Major Callender  and his equally callous wife. Mrs. Moore is surprised and insists that she does not understand people rather no she likes or dislikes a person. That's why Aziz calls her an Oriental. The conflict of the Oriental mind and Western mind is an important one in this novel because it is the basis of much of the misunderstanding Mrs. Moore has the ability to cross lines. However, the relationship thus established between the Mohammedan and the English woman leads to certain momentous consequences afterwords.
