Science and Information / Yahoo delays sale of core business
« on: February 01, 2017, 01:49:13 PM »
Yahoo said Monday its $4.8 billion deal to sell its core internet assets to US telecom titan Verizon has been delayed several months.

The closing originally set for this quarter has been pushed into next quarter due to “work required to meet closing conditions,” the California online pioneer said in a statement, adding that it was “working expeditiously to close the transaction as soon as practicable.”
The news came in an earnings release showing Yahoo swung to a profit of $162 million in the final three months of last year.
The deal with Verizon, which would end Yahoo’s run of more than 20 years as an independent company, has been thrown into doubt following disclosures of two huge data breaches.
Yahoo said it is ramping up security as it grapples with the aftermath of epic hacks.
“Our top priority continues to be enhancing security for our users,” Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer said.
She added that “approximately 90 percent of our daily active users have already taken or do not need to take remedial action to protect their accounts, and we’re aggressively continuing to drive this number up.”
Yahoo boasted having more than a billion users monthly in 2016, with more than 650 million of those people connecting from mobile devices.
Hack aftershocks
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has opened an investigation into whether Yahoo should have informed investors sooner about two major data breaches, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter.
US law requires companies that fall victim to such hacks to disclose them as soon as they are deemed to affect stock prices.
Yahoo announced in September that hackers in 2014 stole personal data from more than 500 million of its user accounts. It admitted another cyber attack in December, this one dating from 2013, affecting more than a billion users.
The SEC’s investigation is focusing on why it took Yahoo several years to reveal the 2013 and 2014 attacks.
The data breaches have been a major embarrassment for a former internet leader that has failed to keep up with Google, Facebook and other rising stars.
The cyber attacks, and how notifying users was handled, has also raised concerns by investors that Verizon may seek to pay a lower price for Yahoo or even back out of the deal.
When companies are in the process of being acquired, earnings that hit or surpass targets typically don’t knock matters off course.
“The bigger things are the breaches; those have Verizon reconsidering the deal,” analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group told AFP.
“I think the merger is at risk; the delay would point to that as still a possibility.”
Courting Mavens
The earnings report showed Yahoo swung to profit a year after a massive $4.4 billion loss in the same period a year earlier, resulting from a large writedown on the value of its holdings.
Revenue in the fourth quarter rose to $1.47 billion from $1.27 billion a year earlier.
Yahoo reported a loss of $214 million for the full year on revenue that inched up to $5.2 billion from $5 billion in 2015, according to the earnings report.
Mayer has been driving a shift to mobile, video, social and native advertising offerings at Yahoo, and revenue in those areas-which she dubbed “Mavens,” continued to climb.
Mavens revenue for last year slightly topped $2 billion as compared to $1.7 billion in 2015.
“I’m very pleased with our Q4 results and incredibly proud of the team’s execution on our 2016 strategic plan, particularly given the uniquely eventful past year for Yahoo,” Mayer said.
Yahoo shares were up a little more than one percent to $42.88 in after-market trades that followed release of the earnings figures, which topped Wall Street expectations.
Mayer will quit the company’s board after its merger with Verizon, according to an SEC filing, though she is expected to remain with the core Yahoo business.
Yahoo is selling its main operating business as a way to separate that from its more valuable stake in Chinese internet giant Alibaba.
The share-tending entity, to be renamed Altaba, Inc., will act as an investment company.

Science and Information / Gmail users can't email Javascript files
« on: February 01, 2017, 01:47:13 PM »
To protect users from potential viruses, tech giant Google has announced to restrict Gmail users from sending Javascript files from 13 February.

"Gmail currently restricts certain file attachments (e.g. .exe, .msc, and .bat) for security reasons and similar to other restricted file attachments, you will not be able to attach a .js file and an in-product warning will appear, explaining the reason why," the company said in an official blog.

If you try to send a Javascript attachment after 13 February, you will get a response saying the message is blocked for security reasons.

If you still need to send .js files for legitimate reasons, you can use Google Drive, Google Cloud Storage, or other storage solutions to share or send your files, the blog post added

Science and Information / Space travel may cause genetic changes: NASA
« on: February 01, 2017, 01:46:10 PM »
NASA scientists in an unprecedented study have found that space travel may alter gene expression.

The study involved astronaut Scott Kelly, who spent a year in space and his identical twin Mark who stayed on Earth.

From the lengths of the twins' chromosomes to the microbiomes in their guts, "almost everyone is reporting that we see differences", Christopher Mason, a geneticist at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, was quoted as saying to scientificamerican.com.

The changes that are likely attributable to Scott's time in orbit include alterations to gene expression, DNA methylation -- the reversible addition of a chemical marker that can affect gene expression -- and other biological markers.

DNA methylation decreased in Scott during flight and increased in Mark over the same period.

Levels for both men returned close to pre-flight levels after Scott came back to Earth, according to the preliminary results published in the journal Nature.

"What this means isn't yet clear," said Andrew Feinberg, a geneticist at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, US.

The researchers also reported changes in gene-expression signatures between the twins. Such changes happen in earthbound people all the time, associated with environmental shifts such as changes in diet and sleep habits.

However, the changes in Scott seemed to be larger than normal - perhaps due to the stress of eating frozen food and trying to sleep while floating in space, Mason said.

But, because the Kelly twins are just two people, the results may not be generalized, the study said.

Scott spent 340 days in space during 2015-2016, giving him a lifetime total of 520 days, while Mark, also an astronaut, had previously flown in space for a total of 54 days over four space-shuttle missions between 2001 and 2011.

Life Style / Tips to make your balcony garden more attractive
« on: February 01, 2017, 12:41:45 PM »
Plants are essential when it comes to decorating a small balcony. Avoid using too much floor space of your balcony, do not overcrowd it, says an expert.

Harpreet Ahluwalia, founder and principal designer at Earthly Creations has shared some smart ideas to have a small outdoor paradise that is full of life.
* Plants are essential things you'll need to have to decorate a small balcony. Hang potted plants behind the railings and on the walls.
* Avoid using too much floor space of your balcony, do not overcrowd it. Instead, devise ways to utilise vertical space to double up your space. It's the best space savvy solution that'll allow you to have more plants in your limited space.
* East-facing balcony receives almost six hours of sun, often between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the major benefit of having such a balcony is that you can save your plants from the harsh afternoon sun.
* West-facing balcony garden is quite similar to south-facing balcony -- here the sun shines at its peak for about six-to-eight hours and except tender shade-loving plants, you can plant almost anything.
* Themed plant and flower garden are also viral these days. People living in apartments and penthouses prefer to indulge themselves in kitchen gardening and low-space gardening with small pots and planters in their balcony area. Small coloured pots with different shapes and sizes are in trend.
* One can also place vines and planters in bottles too. Like growing creeper plants like money plant in a bottle will surely use less space and will also enhance the aura of your balcony. Waste bottles of soft drinks can be decorated and painted as per the colour scheme of your interior and can be used to grow such plants.
* Growing flowers of bright shades and exotic fragrance will surely attract butterflies to your flowerbeds. It will ultimately lead you to defining a budget-friendly butterfly garden in your balcony making it a centre of attraction and soothing to the sight.

Life Style / How to get good sleep
« on: February 01, 2017, 12:41:13 PM »
People who fall asleep within 30 minutes or less and wake up no more than once at night qualify for several health benefits associated with good sleep, researchers have suggested.
Sleeping more time while in bed (at least 85 per cent of the total time) and being awake for 20 minutes or less after initially falling asleep are other key determinants of good quality sleep issued by the US non-profit National Sleep Foundation (NSF).
The researchers used at-home sleep technology devices -- gadgets worn throughout sleep or placed on the bed stand -- to analyse the amount of deep and light sleep people get each night, how frequently one wakes up and the length of tossing and turning on the bed.
"Millions of Americans are sleep technology users. These devices provide a glimpse into one's sleep universe, which is otherwise unknown and provide consumers with the resources needed to understand their sleep," said Max Hirshkowitz, Chairman at NSF.
According to NSF's recent Sleep Health Index, as many as 27 per cent of people take longer than 30 minutes, on average, to fall asleep.
Sleep deprivation may result in impairment of judgement, depression, heart problems, obesity and drastic reduction in general well-being of an individual.
The report, published in the journal Sleep Health, also highlights areas where research is needed to identify and further delineate additional indicators of good sleep quality across age groups.

Life Style / Look perfect while travelling
« on: February 01, 2017, 12:40:45 PM »
Whether youre heading to the coast to soak up the summer sun or to climb the hills and enjoy the chill air, you ought to look fresh and good. While it can sometimes be hard to look good when travelling, one can look fresh by following few basic tips.

Karuna Malhotra, Cosmetologist from Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic, doles out tips on how one can look classy yet elegant.

* First and foremost is to hydrate. No matter where you are heading up to you ought to drink loads of water. Drinking water before and during your flight or train or car or cruise will keep your body feeling healthy and your skin looking fresh. Keep your fluid level high; drink water throughout your day. Staying hydrated will help to prevent any headaches or exhaustion you might normally have during travelling.

* Moisturise your skin before setting forth on the journey. If you are travelling by flight, the high altitude and intense air conditioning on a plane are bound to dry your skin. It is best to generously apply your daily facial moisturiser before the flight. In addition to a moisturiser, bring along spring water toner in a spray bottle to spritz on dehydrated skin. Spring water is incredibly hydrating, so if you spray it directly on your face, it gets moisture into the skin immediately. On top of it, apply a good sunscreen with SPF 30 and above.

* Your lips are also as important as the skin of your face: While travelling your lips are susceptible to crinkling and cracking. It's really best to stick with a medicated lip balm to ensure completely smooth, hydrated lips and after that you can add a quick layer of gloss while landing.

* Carry cleansing wipes with you and wipe off the excess oil or dirt from your face. Also carry good quality cleansing milk with you apply it in the night followed by CTM rule every day.

* Complete your beauty sleep as well. We tend to watch TV or sleep when we are out for vacation. But it is recommended to sleep properly during vacation.

* Also try to avoid alcohol while travelling, especially air travel. It won't do any favours, instead it can easily disrupt your sleep pattern. It will also dehydrate your skin and leave you with stinky breath and skin pores. You can have a glass of your favourite on touchdown.

* Eat healthy while travelling. Try to avoid cheesy and fried stuff as the reaction can show on the face by making it dull and dry. Have fresh fruits, veggie sandwiches, almonds and walnuts.

* Your hair tends to become frizzy while travelling. If you have long hair, flip your head upside down and pull your hair into a loose topknot. The knot helps to preserve your travel blow out because the shape sets the hair and gives a boost to your roots -- just make sure not to make it tight.

* For short hair, lightly spritzing the spot with water. This resets the root direction to give you volume again. If you don't have a spray bottle, get your fingers wet in a bathroom sink or via a cup of water and massage the root area to reset the root.

Life Style / Diet may cut bone loss risk in women
« on: February 01, 2017, 12:40:17 PM »
Regular consumption of anti-inflammatory products such as vegetables, fruits, fish and whole grains, could boost bone health and prevent fractures in women, researchers suggest.

The findings showed that young women with the least-inflammatory diets lost less bone density than their peers with the most-inflammatory diets.

This was despite the fact they started off with lower bone density overall.

Furthermore, the risk of hip fracture was almost 50 per cent higher in women younger than 63, compared with the risk for women in the group with the most-inflammatory diets.

The study suggests that women's bone health could benefit when they choose a diet higher in beneficial fats, plants and whole grains, said lead author Tonya Orchard, Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University Orchard.

"A high-quality, less-inflammatory diet may be especially important in reducing hip fracture risk in younger women," Orchard said.

For the new study, the team looked at dietary data from 160,191 women and assigned inflammation scores based on 32 food components that the women reported consuming in the three months prior to their enrolment.

The researchers used bone mineral density data from a subset of 10,290 women. Fracture data was collected for the entire study group.

The results showed women with healthier diets did not lose bone as quickly as those with high-inflammation diets, and "this is important because after menopause women see a drastic loss in bone density that contributes to fractures", Orchard said.

The study appeared in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

Life Style / Revive dull hair with jojoba oil
« on: February 01, 2017, 12:39:05 PM »
Beat the winter hair-related blues with interesting, do-it-yourself recipes using castor, coconut and jojoba oils, says an expert.

Here are some tips from Shiv Mann Singh, founder at Desert Splendour, which is on a mission to provide pure jojoba oil directly from its plantations in Rajasthan to its customers:

* Three-oil warm massage: Take equal portions of castor oil, extra virgin coconut oil and jojoba oil and mix them. Warm the oil mixture in a microwave for 30 seconds and add an egg yolk, mix all the ingredients well and massage the mixture on your hair length.

Castor oil and extra virgin coconut oil help in replenishing dry and dull hair, whereas the egg yolk helps in improving the texture, leaving the tresses soft and shiny.

* Banana voluminising mask: Even if you have fine hair, sometimes dryness can occur, specially in winter. To make sure that you hair look hydrated, mix one mashed banana with a few drops of jojoba oil and one egg white.

Apply this mixture and keep it on for half an hour before rinsing it with warm water.

* Oil massage and towel wrap: Simply apply jojoba oil on your hair whenever you know that your hair feels dry and rough in winters or when you notice that your typical hair care regime is lacking something.

Massage the oil into your hair, section by section starting from the scalp to the ends, pack in a warm towel for 15-20 minutes. Rinse, wash and condition as usual.

Donald Trump: Hello, this is Donald Trump from USA. I am calling from the White House. Is that the police?

Police: My God! Is it really you? Unbelievable! We are honoured! Yes , sir, we are the police, the friend of people (excluding journalists).

Trump: Warmest greetings, friend of people! Hats off,  buddy. I wish I could fly to you to give you a bear hug for what you have done.  Bravo! Bravo!

Police:  Sorry, sir, I don't understand why you're so excited. Would you please explain?

Trump: Oh, please, stop being so modest! You are indeed great. You are the real police. The rest are just black sheep. Shame on them.

Police:  Now we are really confused. Would you explain...

Trump: You beat up few representatives of dishonest peoples.

Police: Now I get it. You are probably talking about journalists.

Trump: Don't call them journalists. They are dishonest people. They are wicked.  You taught them a good lesson.  They wrote stupid things about me, didn't you notice?

Police:  I know, sir. They want to poke their noses into everything. Look at the power plant issue. It is being constructed near a forest. So what? They are going all berserk over this issue. I don't understand why care so much about some plants and animals. They crossed the line and we...

Trump: You did the right thing. Plants and animals are cheap stuff compared to  electricity worth millions of dollars. If they are so compassionate about the forest, they could just pack their bags and go live there.

Police: Ha! Ha! Ha! You are right. They go on blabbering on and one at the slightest chance. They cannot accept the fact that the nation is developing.

Trump:  Exactly. I will teach these yellow journalists a good lesson. The sand truck idea I borrowed from you was a big hit. I think I should try this beating up thing too.

Police: You are right. Give us a call if you need any help. We are pros in this department.

Trump: Of course. Please, pay a visit to White House. We could talk over this issue.

Police: I will.

Trump: Okay, bye now. Make America...sorry, make the police great again.

Police: Sir, the police don't have to be made great. WE ARE ALREDY GREAT.

Life Style / High-altitude living cuts diabetes risk
« on: February 01, 2017, 12:37:31 PM »
A major risk factor for development of heart diseases, strokes and diabetes is lower in people who live at higher altitudes, says a new study that suggests that something as simple as the geographic area in which you live contribute to your risk of developing these diseases.

"We found that those people living between 457 to 2,297 metres, had a lower risk of developing Metabolic Syndrome than those living at sea level (zero to 121 metres)," said Amaya Lopez-Pascual, who conducted this research as part of her PhD thesis at University of Navarra, Spain.

Metabolic syndrome is the medical term for the combination of high blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol levels, as well as excess body fat around the waist, and contributes to serious health problems.

While the reported increase in the metabolic syndrome is principally blamed on higher obesity rates, smoking and increasingly inactive lifestyles, less is known about the effect our environment may have on us.

"Living or training at high altitudes or under a simulated hypoxic (oxygen deficient) environment seems to help with heart and lung function, losing weight, and improves insulin sensitivity," co-senior author of this study Pedro Gonzalez-Muniesa, Associate Professor at University of Navarra, noted.

The researchers used data from a Spanish project, where participants have been voluntarily submitting information about their health twice-yearly since 1999.

Information from thousands of initially healthy participants were used to investigate the development of metabolic syndrome in relation to the altitude of where they lived.

The results, published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology, were quite clear - the higher the altitude, the less likely you were of developing metabolic syndrome.

Interestingly, using information about the participants' family history, the researchers could also assess if those more prone to this health problem also saw these benefits.

"We found our results were independent of the genetic background of the individuals," Gonzalez-Muniesa noted.
