Fruit / Pest Fruit Flies Found in Northern California Neighborhood
« on: June 29, 2015, 12:05:04 PM »
A state lab has found a fruit fly infestation in a Northern California neighborhood. Santa Clara County officials say six fruit flies were trapped in Cupertino, a Silicon Valley city south of San Francisco. County officials say an eradication program was scheduled to begin last week, and will last eight weeks. The Oriental Fruit Fly is a pest found throughout much of southern Asia. The fly feeds on more than 230 kinds of fruits and vegetables including citrus and stone fruits. Fly eggs lead to maggots that feed on the pulp, wasting the fruit or vegetable. This is the third time in eight years that there has been an Oriental Fruit Fly infestation in Cupertino. The fly typically makes its way into the country from contraband fruit. [Coll.]

Salad / How to make Spring Onion Flowers?
« on: June 29, 2015, 12:02:10 PM »
Step 1 : For these flowers, select the ones with slightly greater bulb size. Wash the onions properly and then dry them using a cloth. Separate the green part of the spring onions so that only the white bulb with a small stem remains. Also remove the top part of the white onion so that it becomes flat enough to give cuts.
Step 2 : Give long vertical cuts to the onion bulbs towards the green stem. Now give cuts perpendicular to the earlier ones.
Step 3 : Now keep these bulbs them in chilled water for atleast 15-20 minutes. We can add some ice cubes to the water for better effect. The chilling effect causes the petals to open up and the onions literally bloom like flowers. [Coll.]

Salad / Onions in Salads: Soak Them in Water First
« on: June 28, 2015, 12:36:42 PM »
There's nothing wrong with a good hunk of onion in a salad: it's crunchy, and filled with pungent flavor. However, when that strong flavor takes over the dish, not to mention the next few hours of the victim's mouth, that's when one starts to push those crisp onion slices off to the side of the plate. But there's a great way to have your onion and eat it too!
Soaking onions in ice water for 10 or 15 minutes mellows out the flavor to take that sharp edge, and accompanying aftertaste. It's a trick restaurants use, and you can achieve the same results, too. [Coll.]
