Too many European banks survived the financial crisis, the head of Europe’s banking regulator said in a newspaper interview on Monday.
“I’m convinced that too few European banks were dismantled and disappeared from the market,” European Banking Authority (EBA) chief Andrea Enria told the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview.
“Barely 40 (disappeared), compared with around 500 in the United States,” he said.
“Governments wanted to keep their banks alive and that has hampered the healing process” of Europe’s financial system, Enria said. The EBA organised a series of stress tests for European banks in recent years which have been criticised as being too lenient.
Europe is currently in the process of setting up a new banking union to strengthen its financial system. And Enria is favour of putting in place truly Europe-wide structures, he told the Financial Times.
“You need European decision mechanisms rather than having always a committee-type of decision in a crisis,” he said. “Committees in a crisis don’t work because you have conflicts.”

The era of easy money for Indian banks may be coming to an end. Unlimited access to cheap overnight funding from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was tightened mid-year as part of measures to support a plunging rupee, and now the central bank is keen to use the restrictions to help it deepen money markets.
The ability of banks to continuously tap funds through the central bank’s Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) lowers their need to raise cash in the markets, which has thwarted the development of a proper money-market yield curve.
That seems set to change under new Governor Raghuram Rajan, who has pledged to deepen and develop India’s financial markets. As a first step, he wants to encourage use of new term repos.
Sources say the RBI will deliberately go slow in removing the cap on funds banks can borrow via the LAF, even as it unwinds other emergency measures imposed to prop up the rupee.
Having a money-market yield curve would help investors and companies better price risk across a range of maturities, and should make markets more liquid.
“Globally, many central banks rely more on term lending than overnight lending. We also want to move to that kind of a system where the reliance on overnight borrowing from the RBI will be reduced to the minimum. This will help in building a smooth yield curve,” said an official aware of the issue.
Under the LAF, banks borrow overnight funds at the central bank’s main lending rate, the repo rate, currently at 7.75 percent.
The facility is intended to help lenders smooth over daily fluctuations in their liquidity needs, but banks have instead used it to borrow easy money, and fund longer-term lending by repeatedly rolling over their collateral.
That changed since mid-year when the RBI limited borrowing first to 1 percent of bank deposits and then to 0.50 percent, about 400 billion rupees daily, in measures to tighten the supply of rupees and support its exchange rate.
“LAF is a liquidity management tool. But banks are using it to fund their loan book and they are not very actively mobilising deposits,” said a second official familiar with the central bank’s thinking.
Estimates are that banks now have to raise at least about 800 billion rupees each day outside of the LAF.
Some of that can be tapped via other central bank facilities, including an export refinance window where funds are borrowed at the repo rate, and the Marginal Standing Facility, emergency funding at a more punitive rate of 8.75 percent.
Banks can also raise funds from 7-day and 14-day term repurchase agreements (repos) that were launched in October. The first three auctions have attracted strong demand, and the RBI can eventually add more tenors to create a yield curve.
Having become accustomed to unlimited low-cost cash, the shift to market-based funding has led to some volatility as banks adjust to the new environment.
The Mumbai Inter-Bank Offer Rate, or MIBOR, an overnight rate that determines the pricing of short-term debt such as commercial paper, is moving in a range of about 100 basis points, compared with 10 to 20 basis points in mid-July.
Last week, MIBOR was at 8.80 percent, higher than even the 8.75 percent the RBI charges for emergency funding. But bankers acknowledge the long-term benefits of creating a yield curve.
“We are using the term repo facility. We are not facing any issues due to the repo cap. The RBI should gradually move to longer tenors to cover the duration till the 91-day T-bills. It will eventually help the development of an interbank term money market,” said NS Venkatesh, treasurer at IDBI Bank.
It is not just a matter of commercial banks changing their practices. The Reserve Bank may also need to change some of its rules before the money markets can fully develop.
One of the major issues seen restricting the interbank term repo market is a set of regulations preventing collateral pledged in a repo being reused by the party providing the funds, a common feature in more developed markets.
“The RBI is trying to wean away banks from using the overnight window to support their balance-sheet activities,” said R Sivakumar, head of fixed income at Axis Mutual Fund.
“The ultimate success will be if they can develop a term money market outside the central bank’s window.”

China’s quick release of a surprisingly detailed national reform plan shows leaders are serious about economic change, analysts say, but uncertainties remain over its implementation.
Just days after an initial outline announced at the end of a closely watched Chinese Communist Party meeting was largely panned as vague and disappointing, the ruling body added weight to the framework for change in the world’s second-largest economy.
Reforms approved at the so-called Third Plenum meeting, a year after the party revamped its top leadership, include requiring powerful state-owned companies to pay larger dividends to the government to beef up a weak social security system.
China will also encourage a bigger role for the private sector, further champion interest rate reform, loosen currency controls and allow farmers more room to profit from state-owned land they currently till on contract, according to documents released by state media.
“The new leaders really delivered and promised a number of concrete changes,” Hong Kong-based Societe Generale economist Yao Wei wrote in a report.
The lengthy and detailed final “decision” document released late Friday was “encouragingly specific” compared with the initial communique three days earlier, she wrote.
State-owned businesses will have to pay 30 percent of their profits into the Social Security Fund by 2020, up from a current maximum of 20 percent, and Yao said: “This ratio may not impress everyone, but it is laudable that the leaders are willing to set this target explicitly.”
While analysts mostly expressed pleasant surprise at the final plan’s contents, they stressed its ultimate success can only be judged based on implementation, which will be complex.
“I would take it as essentially positive,” said Christopher Balding, who teaches economics at Peking University’s HSBC Business School in the southern city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong.
“I think the concern is going to be when the rubber hits the road,” he told AFP, citing the nuts, bolts and speed of how it is carried out, including the issue of when it becomes law.
“China has been talking about rebalancing the economy for upwards of a decade and there’s really been no progress.”
The country’s leaders have said its credit-fuelled state investment model must yield to one where consumers and private businesses drive demand, as in advanced economies such as the United States, Europe and Japan.
Annual growth rates above 10 percent were once common during China’s metamorphosis from a classic communist-style command economy to the state-private hybrid unleashed by reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s.
In the process, hundreds of millions of Chinese were lifted out of poverty as the economy enjoyed a decades-long boom, becoming a lynchpin of global commerce and influencing everything from Australian iron ore prices to US interest rates.
But with growth slowing — last year’s 7.7 percent expansion was the weakest since 1999 — the impetus to find new engines to keep the huge ship sailing forward grows ever more acute.
London-based Capital Economics analysts Mark Williams and Wang Qinwei called the final plan “the most impressive statement of reform intentions that we’ve seen this century”. Though they emphasised words are one thing, action another.
“A policy document, however weighty and well put-together, does not in itself change anything on the ground,” they wrote.
“Whether or not the plenum ends up a turning point in China’s development depends on how well reforms are implemented.”
Helping shore up optimism among some was what they saw as the strong hand of Xi Jinping, who took over the reins of the party last November before becoming state president in March in a once-a-decade leadership change.
“The bold reform package is a powerful demonstration of President Xi Jinping’s personal authority within the system after only a year at the helm,” Christopher K. Johnson of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington said in a report.
Now the emphatic public declaration of the pledges is likely to heighten expectations on the ruling party to deliver.
“It does put them on the spot,” Peking University’s Balding said.

“When you’re flying private, you’re not faking it,” goes the saying.
If someone is spending tens of millions of dollars on a private jet, you know there has got to be serious money behind them.
But, as aircraft dealer Steve Varsano says: “Don’t forget the extras.”
Once you’ve got the jet, there’s the running costs – the fuel, the pilot, the insurance. “It can add up to thousands of dollars an hour.”
But if you have the cash, London-based Varsano has the aircraft.
He runs the world’s first – and, as far as he knows, still the only – street-level retail showroom dealing in the sale of used and new private jets.
It includes a full-size mock-up of an Airbus ACJ 319 business jet cabin – the real thing costs about $60m (£37m), plus $30m to fit out – filled with all that the discerning private traveller needs: a pop-up video screen, cigar box and bar, sound system, space at the back for a bedroom, a coloured lighting scheme to soften the mood, soft carpet.
While you’re sitting in the luxury leather chairs – $40,000 each, since you ask – you can look through the cabin windows at a video-simulated sky as if you’re flying through the clouds.
The whole place is spotlessly clean and oozing wealth and sophistication. And that’s exactly what Varsano wants when the energy billionaires, corporate chiefs, and celebrities walk through his door.
The Jet Business is at Hyde Park Corner, in a part of London that has become a magnate for the super-rich.
Varsano, pretty wealthy in his own right, lives just around the corner in exclusive Mayfair, with his girlfriend Lisa Tchenguiz, sister of the property tycoons Vincent and Robert Tchenguiz.
Varsano reckons that just about anyone who might be in the market for a private plane eventually passes through central London.
“That’s why I chose the best location in world,” says the New York-born entrepreneur. “If I was trying to sell to these people in their own country, I would be travelling permanently.”
The Jet Business opened two years ago, although Varsano has been in the industry for almost three decades.
For mere mortals, private jets are the ultimate luxury accessory. But Varsano insists that for his clients they are just time machines.
“They want to cut down on dead time. These people might be in the air once, twice a week. It’s about convenience. It’s about getting a deal done – perhaps at some distant airport – and going home,” he says.
So, private jets are just a functional tool, then? “The view that it’s all about flying off on a skiing trip with champagne and girls is just so untrue,” he says.
About 80% of Varsano’s deals are for used jets. New ones can take months to deliver, and he finds that people with serious money to spend tend to want something within weeks.
The showroom has pretty much all they need to make a choice.
Next to the Airbus mock-up is a room with a huge bank of screens running the full length of the wall. This is where prospective clients weigh up their options.
At the touch of an iPad, clients can run through a range of makes and models, prices, age, range, running costs, and view pictures.
A full-scale schematic of the length and height of the aircraft can be brought up on the wall. “You can stand against the screen, or walk the length, and great a real sense of a cabin’s size,” Varsano says.
“I like to let clients just play around with the iPad. It’s an educational tool. Most successful people don’t like asking stupid questions. But in our business most people don’t know what questions to ask.”
Once a client has made a choice, tap the iPad again and a menu of dozens of for-sale aircraft located around the world appears.
All this information is gathered and processed by staff who sit at desks resembling aircraft cock-pits.
“You’ll never find an airplane for sale in the same country as the buyer,” says Varsano. Deals can be complicated.

The government yesterday unveiled its plan to boost electricity generation capacity by 141 percent by 2021 mainly on the back of fuel diversity and harnessing of renewable energy resources.
“We are very hopeful,” Finance Minister AMA Muhith said at a programme titled “Power system master plan – strategy towards 24,000MW power generation”, organised by Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) at its headquarters.
Muhith said the government initially set out to achieve 20,000 megawatt power generation capacity by 2021, but revised it upwards to 24,000MW following achievement of 10,000MW generation capacity recently.
Securing a sustainable supply of primary fuel, private sector participation, demand side management, energy efficiency improvement program and regional cooperation on cross-border power trade would also help in generation of 24,000MW of power by 2021, Mizanur Rahman, director of BPDB, said.
Rahman, who prepared a strategic paper for the achievement of the power generation target, also called for turning to imports for primary fuel supply options as indigenous resources are “inadequate”.
To address the shortfall, he recommended imports of liquefied natural gas and coal from Indonesia, Australia and South Africa, together with enhanced gas exploration and production, domestic coal development and safe nuclear for base load.
Rahman also called for ensuring gas supply to power plants via upgrades in distribution infrastructure. The shipping ministry also needs to establish deep sea port and dredge for smooth fuel and equipment transportation for achieving 24,000MW by 2021.
The communication ministry needs to strengthen track and road capacity for heavy weight equipment, provide locomotive and wagon for liquid fuel transportation and regularly carry out road maintenance for smooth operation.
The government needs to ensure financing for public and private sector projects, availability of foreign currency, development of skilled manpower and introduction of corporate culture and professionalism in sector entities, he said.

বছর খানেক আগেও শহর কিংবা গ্রাম—সব জায়গার দোকানেই হরদম বিভিন্ন কোম্পানির বোতলজাত আমের জুস বিক্রি হতো। অসহ্য গরমে আম আছে মনে করে সবাই নিশ্চিন্ত মনে সেসব জুস খেতেন।
কিন্তু দেশে পণ্যের মান নিয়ন্ত্রণকারী সংস্থা বিএসটিআই বলছে, জুস ও ড্রিংকসের নতুন মান নির্ধারণ করার পর থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানও আমের জুস উৎপাদন কিংবা বাজারজাত করার লাইসেন্সের জন্য আবেদন করেনি। এর মানে হলো, বাজারে এখন আর বিএসটিআই অনুমোদিত কোনো আমের জুস নেই। আগে যেসব প্রতিষ্ঠানের ‘আমের জুস’ বিক্রি হতো, সেগুলো এখন হয়ে গেছে ‘আমের ড্রিংকস’। বলা যায়, ফলের রস নয়, এখন পাওয়া যাচ্ছে ফলের পানীয়।
বিএসটিআই বলছে, নতুন মান নির্ধারণ করার পর শুধু একটি কোম্পানি বিএসটিআইয়ের কাছ থেকে জুস তৈরি ও বাজারজাত করার লাইসেন্স নিয়েছে। সেটিও একটি আনারসের জুস।
বিএসটিআইয়ের পরিচালক (সিএম—সার্টিফিকেশন মার্কস) কমল প্রসাদ দাস প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘নতুন মান নির্ধারণের পর নতুন করে এখন আর কেউ আমের জুসের লাইসেন্স নিচ্ছে না। আগে যারা জুস তৈরি করত, তারাও এখন ড্রিংকসে চলে গেছে। এখন বাজারে বিএসটিআই অনুমোদিত আমের জুস বলতে কিছু নেই। তবে এই সময়ে একটি কোম্পানি আনারসের জুস তৈরির লাইসেন্স নিয়েছে।’
অবশ্য বাজারে বিদেশ থেকে আমদানি হওয়া কিছু জুস বিক্রি হচ্ছে।
বিএসটিআই নির্ধারিত নতুন মান অনুযায়ী, ফলের জুস বা রসে ওই ফলের অন্তত ৮৮ শতাংশ প্রাকৃতিক উপাদান (ফ্রুট পাল্প) থাকতে হবে। আর ফলের ড্রিংকসে বা পানীয়তে প্রাকৃতিক উপাদান থাকতে হবে অন্তত ১০ শতাংশ। আগের মান অনুযায়ী, ফলের জুসে ২৫ শতাংশ ও ড্রিংকসে ১০ শতাংশ প্রাকৃতিক উপাদান থাকার বাধ্যবাধকতা ছিল।
বিএসটিআই জুস ও ড্রিংকসের এই নতুন মান নির্ধারণ করে গত বছরের জুনে। এর পরই প্রাণের আট ধরনের ড্রিংকসের লাইসেন্স বাতিল করা হয়। নতুন এই মান নিয়ে ব্যবসায়ীদের সঙ্গে চলতে থাকে বিএসটিআইয়ের নানা আলোচনা। তবে বিএসটিআই তাদের নির্ধারিত মানেই অটল থাকে। বিএসটিআইয়ের কর্মকর্তারা বলছেন, নতুন এই মান এ বছরের জুন থেকে কার্যকর হয়েছে।
জুসে ফলের প্রাকৃতিক উপাদান কম থাকায় আগে বেশ কয়েকটি প্রতিষ্ঠান বিএসটিআই থেকে অনুমোদন নিয়ে জুস উৎপাদন ও বাজারজাত করে আসছিল। এর মধ্যে অন্যতম ছিল প্রাণ-আরএফএল গ্রুপের ফ্রুটো, আকিজ গ্রুপের ফ্রুটিকা, গ্লোবের ম্যাঙ্গোলি, আবুল খায়ের গ্রুপের স্টারশিপ, সজীব গ্রুপের সেজান। বিএসটিআই বলছে, নতুন মান নির্ধারণের পর এই প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর সবাই এখন জুসের বদলে ড্রিংকসের লাইসেন্স নিয়েছে।
ফলের ড্রিংকস বিএসটিআইয়ের ১৫৫টি বাধ্যতামূলক পণ্যের আওতাভুক্ত নয়। অর্থাৎ যে ১৫৫টি পণ্য অবশ্যই বিএসটিআইয়ের অনুমোদন নিয়ে বাজারজাত করতে হয়, তার মধ্যে ড্রিংকস পড়ে না। তবে বিএসটিআইয়ের লোগোসহ ড্রিংকস বাজারজাত করতে চাইলে বিএসটিআইয়ের নির্ধারিত মান অনুযায়ী ওই পণ্যের স্বেচ্ছাপ্রণোদিত (ভলান্টারি) লাইসেন্স নিতে হয়। তবে জুস ১৫৫টি বাধ্যতামূলক পণ্যের অন্তর্ভুক্ত। বিএসটিআই জুস-ড্রিংকসের তিন বছরের জন্য লাইসেন্স দেয়।
বিএসটিআইয়ের উপপরিচালক নুরুল ইসলাম প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘নতুন মান নির্ধারণের ঠিক আগে দু-একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান তাদের জুসের লাইসেন্স নবায়ন করেছিল। সেদিক থেকে হয়তো দু-একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানের জুস তৈরির লাইসেন্স আছে। তারাও আর জুস তৈরি করছে না। কারণ, তা তৈরি করতে হবে নতুন মান অনুযায়ী।’
তবে নতুন মান নির্ধারণের পর বাংলা-ডাচ্ ডেভেলপমেন্ট লিমিটেড নামের একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান আনারসের জুসের একটি লাইসেন্স নেয়। বাংলাদেশ ও হল্যান্ডের যৌথ বিনিয়োগে ২০১১ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত এই কোম্পানিটির জুসের নাম ‘আই এম রিয়েল’। এ বছরের ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে জুসটি বাজারজাত হচ্ছে। প্রতিষ্ঠানটির কারখানা টাঙ্গাইলের মধুপুরে।
জুস-ড্রিংকসের নতুন মান নির্ধারণের পর গত বছরের অক্টোবরে মানহীন জুস-ড্রিংকসের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা নেয় বিএসটিআই। সে সময় বেশ কয়েকটি ব্র্যান্ডের ফ্রুট ড্রিংকসের লাইসেন্স বাতিল করে সংস্থাটি। এর মধ্যে ছিল প্রাণের আট ধরনের ফ্রুট ড্রিংকস, প্রমি অ্যাগ্রো ফুডসের প্রমি (লিচি ও অরেঞ্জ), মডার্ন ফুড প্রোডাক্টের ফ্রুট ড্রিংকস মডার্ন, নিউট্রি অ্যাগ্রো ফুডস অ্যান্ড প্যাকেজিংয়ের ফ্রুট ড্রিংকস নিউট্রি অরেঞ্জ, সাফা কনজুমারস প্রোডাক্টসের ফ্রুট ড্রিংকস রকস্টার।
অভিযোগ ছিল, এসব ড্রিংকসে যে ফলের নাম ব্যবহার করা হচ্ছে, সেই ফলের ১০ শতাংশ প্রাকৃতিক উপাদান খুঁজে পায়নি বিএসটিআই।

মেসি কেন এত ঘন ঘন চোটের শিকার হচ্ছেন? মেসির সাম্প্রতিক চোটের পর এই প্রশ্নই উঠে গেছে। শুধু প্রশ্ন ওঠাই নয়, তাঁর সমালোচকেরা বারবার চোট পাওয়ার কারণ অনুসন্ধান এবং ব্যাখ্যা-বিশ্লেষণও করছেন!
দায়টা আসলে মেসিরই। নিজেকে এমন উচ্চতায় নিয়ে গেছেন এবং প্রত্যাশা তৈরি করেছেন, টানা দুই ম্যাচে গোল না পেলেই প্রশ্ন ওঠে—মেসির কী হলো? তেমনি প্রশ্ন ওঠে চোট নিয়েও। তবে চোটের কারণ হিসেবে যেসব গল্প ছড়াচ্ছে তা উড়িয়ে দিয়েছেন মেসি। বার্সেলোনার আর্জেন্টাইন তারকা নিজে আবারও চোট পাওয়ায় বিমর্ষ এবং হতাশ। তবে উদ্বিগ্ন নন। খেলতে গেলে চোটাঘাত আসবেই—এই বাস্তবতাকে মেনে নিয়ে মেসি পুরো মনোযোগ দিয়েছেন দ্রুত সেরে ওঠার দিকে।
এ মৌসুমে তিন-তিনবার চোট পেয়ে মাঠ ছেড়েছেন মেসি। অথচ মৌসুমের মাত্রই এক-তৃতীয়াংশ গেছে। সর্বশেষ গত ১০ নভেম্বর রিয়াল বেটিসের বিপক্ষে পাওয়া চোট তো তাঁকে মাস দুয়েকের জন্য ছিটকে ফেলেছে মাঠের বাইরে। এই চোট বার্সেলোনাকে যেমন শঙ্কায় ফেলেছে, আর্জেন্টিনাকে ফেলেছে আরও বেশি। মাস কয়েক পরই বিশ্বকাপ। আর্জেন্টাইনরা শঙ্কিত তো হবেই।
আর্জেন্টিনারই পত্রিকা ওলেতে তাঁর এই ঘন ঘন চোটে পড়া নিয়ে বিতর্কিত সব মন্তব্য করা হয়েছে। মেসির খাদ্যতালিকা, ক্লাবের হয়ে বেশি চাপ নিতে গিয়েই শরীরের বারোটা বাজাচ্ছেন কি না, এমনকি প্রশ্ন তোলা হয়েছে প্রাক-মৌসুমে মেসির বেশি বেশি প্রদর্শনী ম্যাচ খেলা নিয়েও। চোটের কারণে গত মৌসুমের শেষ দিকে মাঠে নামতে পারেননি। অথচ প্রাক-মৌসুমে এশিয়া-ইউরোপ-আমেরিকা ঘুরে একের পর এক প্রীতি ম্যাচ খেলেছেন। তবে কি পর্যাপ্ত বিশ্রামের ঘাটতি ছিল?

শেষ ১২ ম্যাচে ১১ জয়। বিশ্বকাপ সামনে রেখে যেন উড়ে চলেছে ব্রাজিল। লুইস ফেলিপে স্কলারির দল সর্বশেষ গত শনিবার হারিয়েছে হন্ডুরাসকে, ৫-০ গোলে। সেটা ছিল পাঁচবারের বিশ্বচ্যাম্পিয়নদের টানা ষষ্ঠ জয়। এবার চিলিকে হারানোর অপেক্ষায় ২০১৪ বিশ্বকাপের স্বাগতিকেরা।

এবারের ঢাকা লিগে নিয়মিত পারফরমারদের একজন তিনি। কালও শেখ জামালকে সুপার লিগে তোলা জয়ে তাঁর অবদান ৪৯ বলে অপরাজিত ৫০। জাতীয় দলের হয়ে আর বিপিএল খেলতে এসেছেন আগে, এবার ঢাকা লিগ খেলতে এসে থাকছেন অনেক দিন। জিম্বাবুয়ের অলরাউন্ডার এলটন চিগুম্বুরা জানাচ্ছেন তাঁর এবারের বাংলাদেশ অভিজ্ঞতা

এলটন চিগুম্বরা: অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবেই সুযোগটা পেয়ে গেছি। এই সুযোগ পেয়ে ম্যাচ জেতাটা আমাদের জন্য ছিল বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ। কাজে লাগাতে পেরে ভালো লাগছে। ছেলেরা দারুণ খেলেছে, ব্যাটিং-বোলিং আজ একসঙ্গে জ্বলে উঠেছে।
 আপনিও তো জ্বলে উঠছেন নিয়মিতই। বাংলাদেশের উইকেটে ভালো ব্যাটিংয়ের মন্ত্রটা তাহলে জেনে গেছেন?
চিগুম্বুরা: দলে অবদান রাখতে পারছি বলে ভালো লাগছে। ব্যাটিংয়ে নেমে যতটা পারা যায় চেষ্টা করছি সোজা ব্যাটে খেলতে। এখানে সফল হওয়ার বড় কারণ এটিই। উড়িয়ে মারলেও চেষ্টা করি সোজা খেলতে। আর জায়গামতো বল পেলে আমার প্রিয় শট স্লগ সুইপ ও পুল তো খেলাই যায়। দলে আমার ভূমিকা অনেকটা ফিনিশারের। আগে ব্যাট করলে চাই দলকে যতটা সম্ভব ভালো রান এনে দিতে, পরে ব্যাট করলে চেষ্টা করি জেতাতে।
 স্পিন খেলায়ও তো অনেক উন্নতি করেছেন, বিশেষ করে বাঁহাতি স্পিন...
চিগুম্বুরা: বাংলাদেশে হাজারো বাঁহাতি স্পিনার, প্রতিটি দলেই আছে কয়েকজন। এখানে টানা খেললে তাই বাঁহাতি স্পিন খেলায় উন্নতি হবেই। স্পিন খেলায়ও আমার মূল লক্ষ্য থাকে ওটাই, সোজা ব্যাটে খেলা। বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে অনেক ম্যাচেই আমি আড়াআড়ি শট খেলতে গিয়ে বাঁহাতি স্পিনে আউট হয়েছি। এখানে খেলে অন্তত এটা বুঝেছি, সোজা ব্যাটে খেললে আউট হওয়ার আশঙ্কা কম।
 স্পিনে নিশ্চয়ই এখন অনেক আত্মবিশ্বাসী আপনি?
চিগুম্বুরা: স্পিন খেলাটাই এমন, যত বেশি খেলবেন, আত্মবিশ্বাস বাড়বে। আর যেহেতু আমি মোটামুটি রানও পেয়েছি, আত্মবিশ্বাস তো থাকবেই।
 আপনার জিম্বাবুয়ে সতীর্থ মাসাকাদজা, টেলররাও খেলেছেন এবারের ঢাকা লিগে, রানও পেয়েছেন। এরপর তো এখানেও জিম্বাবুয়েকে হারানো কঠিন হবে বাংলাদেশের জন্য?
চিগুম্বুরা: হা হা হা...আসলে বাংলাদেশের ঘরোয়া ক্রিকেটে খেলার সুযোগ পেয়ে আমরা কৃতজ্ঞ। দেশে এখন আমাদের খেলা নেই, বেকার বসে থাকত হতো। অভিজ্ঞতাটা অমূল্য বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না। এখানে ভালো খেলার কিছু উপায় অন্তত ধরতে তো পেরেছি, বিশেষ করে বাঁহাতি স্পিন সামলানো। বাংলাদেশের বিপক্ষে সিরিজ খেললে তো কাজে লাগবেই। তা ছাড়া আসছে টি-টোয়েন্টি বিশ্বকাপের জন্য এটা আমাদের দারুণ কাজে লাগবে।

 টেস্ট খেলুড়ে দেশ হওয়ার পরও ওয়ার্ল্ড টি-টোয়েন্টিতে বাংলাদেশ ও জিম্বাবুয়েকে প্রাথমিক পর্ব খেলতে হবে। মেনে নেওয়া কতটা কঠিন?
চিগুম্বুরা: কঠিন তো বটেই, বড় একটা চ্যালেঞ্জও। বিশেষ করে এই কন্ডিশনে আফগানিস্তান হবে বড় একটা হুমকি। তবে নিয়ম নিয়মই, মানতেই হবে। ওদের হারিয়েই প্রমাণ করতে হবে আমরা সত্যিই মূল পর্বে খেলার যোগ্য।
 অধিনায়ক মুশফিককে কেমন দেখছেন?
চিগুম্বুরা: এর আগেও মুশির নেতৃত্বে খেলেছি সিলেট রয়্যালসে। শুধু একসঙ্গে খেলার সময়ই নয়, আন্তর্জাতিক ম্যাচে প্রতিপক্ষ অধিনায়ক হিসেবেও ও আমার শ্রদ্ধাভাজন। খেলাটায় মুশির সত্যিকার আবেগ আছে। ও দারুণ পেশাদারও। সামনে থেকে নেতৃত্ব দেয়, সবার শ্রদ্ধা আদায় করে নেয়। মাঠের বাইরেও দারুণ মানুষ। আমার সঙ্গে তো অনেক মজা করে।
 এবার তো দীর্ঘদিন হলো বাংলাদেশে থাকছেন। মাঠের বাইরে সময় কেমন কাটছে?
চিগুম্বুরা: সেই সেপ্টেম্বরে এসেছিলাম। মাঝে দেশে গিয়ে আবার এসেছি। নিজেকে তো এখন বাংলাদেশেরই একজন মনে হয়! ঢাকা শহরটাও এখন বেশ ভালো চিনি, অন্তত হোটেলে ফেরার রাস্তা ভুলে যাই না। আমার হোটেলেই থাকছে হ্যামিল্টন (মাসাকাদজা), ওর সঙ্গে সময় কাটাচ্ছি। সেদিন রিভারক্রুজে গেলাম, সব মিলিয়ে ভালোই কাটছে সময়।

হানিফ মোহাম্মদ, ক্রিকেটের প্রথম ‘লিটল মাস্টার’। ৫৫টি টেস্ট খেলা পাকিস্তানের সাবেক এই ব্যাটসম্যান শচীন টেন্ডুলকারের গুণমুগ্ধ। টেন্ডুলকারের অবসরের পর হাতে কলম তুলে নিলেন ব্যাটিং কিংবদন্তি
লিটল মাস্টার খেতাবটা আমার নয় শচীন টেন্ডুলকারেরই প্রাপ্য। প্রাপ্য লিটল জিনিয়াস খেতাবটাও।
টেন্ডুলকারকে বিস্ময়কর ক্যারিয়ারের শেষবিন্দুতে পৌঁছাতে দেখা আমার জন্য ছিল খুবই আবেগময়। আর কোনো ক্রিকেটার ওই জায়গায় পৌঁছাতে পারবে কি না, সন্দেহ আছে। ‘লিটল জিনিয়াসের’ যা কিছু অর্জন, সবই নতুন প্রজন্মকে অনুপ্রাণিত করবে।
অন্য কোনো ক্রিকেটারকে আমি এতটা মুগ্ধতা ও আগ্রহ নিয়ে অনুসরণ করিনি। আমি মনে করি ভারতীয় ক্রিকেট তার কাছে অনেক ঋণী। ভারতের উচিত তাকে ধন্যবাদ দেওয়া, কারণ বিরাট কোহলি, রোহিত শর্মা ও শিখর ধাওয়ানের মতো নতুন প্রজন্মের প্রতিভারা অনুপ্রেরণা পেয়েছে তার কাছ থেকেই।
ভারতীয় ক্রিকেটকে নতুন উচ্চতায় তোলার পেছনে কারও যদি অনুপ্রেরণা থেকে থাকে সেটা এই ছোট মানুষটাই। তার দৃঢ়সংকল্প, একাগ্রতা, আত্মবিশ্বাস ও বড় কিছু করার মানসিকতাই তো অনুপ্রেরণা হয়ে এসেছে তাদের জন্য। ২৪ বছর ধরে ক্রিকেটে রাজত্ব করাটাই বলে দেয় খেলাটার প্রতি তার ভালোবাসা ও নিবেদন। শুধু ক্রিকেটীয় অর্জনের জন্যই নয়, মাঠের বাইরের আচরণও তাকে তরুণ প্রজন্মের কাছে সত্যিকারের এক আদর্শ মানুষ বানিয়েছে।
মুম্বাইয়ে বিদায়ী টেস্টটা খেলতে নামার পর টেন্ডুলকার যে ভালোবাসা, সম্মান ও স্তুতিবন্যায় ভেসেছে, স্বীকার করতেই হবে সেটা দেখে অশ্রু ধরে রাখতে পারিনি। আমি কেঁদেছি, কারণ এটাই তো ছিল সরাসরি তার অনন্যসুন্দর ব্যাটিং দেখার শেষ সুযোগ। আমি কেঁদেছি, কারণ সত্যিই বিশ্বাস করি, সে আরও দু-তিন বছর অনায়াসেই খেলতে পারত।
তিনবার এই লিটল মাস্টারের সঙ্গে সাক্ষাতের সুযোগ পেয়েছি আমি। সর্বশেষ, ক্রিকেট ক্লাব অব ইন্ডিয়ার রজতজয়ন্তী উদ্যাপনে প্রয়াত রাজ সিং দুঙ্গারপুর যেবার সপরিবারে আমাকে মুম্বাইয়ে নিমন্ত্রণ জানালেন, সেবার।

আমি একটি টেলিভিশন অনুষ্ঠানে অংশ নিয়েছিলাম। সেখানে কিছু লোক ভারতীয় দলে টেন্ডুলকারের ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তুলেছিল, তার ফিটনেস ও ফর্ম নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তুলে তার অবসরে যাওয়া উচিত কি না, সেটা জানতে চেয়েছিল। শুনে তখন আমি হতভম্ব! ১০ বছর আগের ঘটনা সেটি। মনে আছে বলেছিলাম, ‘আপনারা একটা রত্ন পেয়েছেন, উচিত হবে না সেটিকে ধ্বংস করা। সে যত দিন খেলতে চায়, তাকে খেলতে দিন এবং তাকেই সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে দিন কবে অবসর নেবে।’ আমি গর্বিত যে সেদিন আমি ভুল বলিনি। এর পরও শচীন অনেক নতুন রেকর্ড গড়েছে। ব্যাটিংকে অনেক উঁচুতে নিয়ে গেছে। আমার মনে হয় না শিগগিরই এসব রেকর্ড ভাঙবে।
আমি সৌভাগ্যবান যে ব্র্যাডম্যানের যুগ দেখেছি, দেখেছি টেন্ডুলকারের অসাধারণ সব কীর্তিও। স্বভাবতই তাই সর্বকালের সেরা ব্যাটসম্যান কে এই প্রশ্নটার মুখোমুখি অনেকবারই হয়েছি। ৯৯ টেস্ট গড়ের ব্র্যাডম্যান, না ১০০টি আন্তর্জাতিক সেঞ্চুরি করা টেন্ডুলকার? খেতাবটা ব্র্যাডম্যানই পেতে পারেন, তবে এই ধরনের তুলনা টানা সব সময়ই কঠিন এবং আমি সেটা করিও না। কারণ বেশি ম্যাচ খেললে গড়ে সেটার প্রভাব পড়বেই।
ব্র্যাডম্যানের মান ও যোগ্যতা নিয়ে কোনো সন্দেহ নেই। তবে টেন্ডুলকার ২৫ বছর ধরে ধারাবাহিকতা, একাগ্রতা ও রানের বন্যা বইয়ে দিয়েই নিজেকে অসাধারণ এক উচ্চতায় নিয়ে গেছে। দেখিয়েছে অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রম ও ভালোবাসায় কারও পক্ষে কতটা অর্জন করা সম্ভব। এভাবেই সে সব ধরনের ক্রিকেটে ধারাবাহিক পারফর্ম করে সেরা হয়েছে।
আজকাল আমরা পাকিস্তানের ব্যাটিং-সমস্যা ও এটা থেকে বের হওয়ার উপায় খুঁজছি। আমি আমাদের ব্যাটসম্যানদের একটাই পরামর্শ দেব, তারা যেন টেন্ডুলকারের ব্যাটিংয়ের ভিডিও দেখে ও উপলব্ধি করে এই মহান খেলাটায় অসম্ভব বলে কিছু নেই। তাদের দেখা উচিত টেন্ডুলকার কীভাবে সময়ের সঙ্গে নিজের ব্যাটিং টেকনিক বদলে নিয়েছে।
শেষ টেস্টে হাফ সেঞ্চুরির পর অবসরে যাচ্ছে ভেবে মনটা আরও খারাপ হয়েছে। আমার মনে হয় কেউ যদি লিটল মাস্টার খেতাবের যোগ্য হয়, তবে সে এই মানুষটাই। ২০০ টেস্ট খেলার জন্য আমি টেন্ডুলকারকে অভিনন্দন জানাই। আমার মনে কোনো সন্দেহই নেই, যখনই কেউ ক্রিকেট নিয়ে কথা বলবে, টেন্ডুলকারের নামটা সবার ওপরেই থাকবে। টেন্ডুলকার ক্রিকেটে খেলেছে ২৪ বছর, তবে তার অবদান কোনো দিনই মুছে যাবে না।
আমার জীবনের অন্যতম সেরা মুহূর্ত হলো ২০০৬ সালের জানুয়ারিতে, ভারত যখন পাকিস্তানে এল ও কান্ট্রি ক্লাবে নিমন্ত্রণে এল। মুম্বাইয়ে সিসিআইয়ের অনুষ্ঠানে অংশ নেওয়ার জন্য বিসিসিআইয়ের পক্ষ থেকে আমাকে সম্মাননা স্মারক তুলে দিয়েছিল টেন্ডুলকারই!
আমার অ্যাওয়ার্ড শোকেসে সামনের দিকে সগৌরবে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে সেই স্মারক প্লেটটি! পিটিআই।

ক্রিকেট ইতিহাসের সফলতম জুটি তাঁরা। আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেটে ২৪৭ ইনিংসে দুজনের জুটিতে এসেছে ১২৪০০ রান, গড়েছেন ৩৮টি শতরানের জুটি। মাঠের বাইরের জুটি এত পোক্ত না হলেও একসঙ্গে কাটিয়েছেন অনেকটা সময়। এনডিটিভিকে দেওয়া সাক্ষাৎকারে সৌরভ গাঙ্গুলী কথা বললেন মাঠের বাইরের শচীন টেন্ডুলকারকে নিয়ে

সৌরভ গাঙ্গুলী: আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রীড়া আইকনদের মধ্যে শচীনের তুলনা কেবল ডিয়েগো ম্যারাডোনা। ম্যারাডোনা আমার খুব প্রিয় ছিল, শচীনও তা-ই। দুজনই জিনিয়াস।
 বাংলা শেখানো প্রসঙ্গে...
শচীনকে বাংলা শেখানোর অনেক চেষ্টা করেছি। কিন্তু তাতে কাজ হয়নি। ওর বাংলা অবিশ্বাস্যরকমের বাজে! পরে আমি শচীনকে অনুরোধ করেছি আর বাংলা বলার চেষ্টা না করতে। কারণ আমাদের অসাধারণ ভাষাটির বারোটা বাজিয়ে ছাড়ছিল ও!
 দুরন্ত টেন্ডুলকার...
শচীনের সঙ্গে আমার প্রথম দেখা ১৪ বছর বয়সে, ইন্দোরে একটি ক্যাম্পে। ওই ক্যাম্পের সময়ই একদিন রোববার বিকেলে আমি আর আমার এক বন্ধু রুমে ঘুমাচ্ছিলাম। ঘুম ভাঙার পর দুজন দেখি, আমাদের ব্যাগ সব পানিতে ভাসছে। প্রথমে ভেবেছিলাম বাথরুমে কোথাও
কোনো ফুটো হয়েছে। কিন্তু বাথরুমে গিয়ে দেখলাম সব ঠিক। বুঝতেই পারছিলাম না, ঘটনা কী! পরে দরজা খুলে বাইরে বেরিয়ে দেখি, পানির বালতি হাতে দাঁড়িয়ে শচীন ও কাম্বলি। ওরাই রুমে পানি দিচ্ছিল। শচীন তখন এমনই দুষ্টু ছিল!
 রসনাবিলাস...
শ্রীলঙ্কায় আমরা এক বন্ধুর ওখানে অনেকবার গিয়েছি যেখানে দুর্দান্ত কাঁকড়া পাওয়া যেত। কেনিয়ায় আমরা মজা করে মুরগির মাংসের দারুণ একটি ডিশ খেলাম। খাওয়ার পর শচীন বলল, ওটা ছিল কুমিরের মাংস!
 প্রসঙ্গ অর্জুন টেন্ডুলকার...
২০০৮ সালে অস্ট্রেলিয়ার বিপক্ষে খেলছিলাম। আমার রুম খোলা ছিল, অর্জুন একটি ব্যাট হাতে আমার রুমে এল। জানতে চাইল, কাভার ড্রাইভ কীভাবে খেলতে হয়। আমি বললাম, ‘গিয়ে তোমার বাবাকে জিজ্ঞেস করো!’ শুনে অর্জুন বলল, ‘আমার বাবা ডানহাতি। আপনি যেহেতু বাঁহাতি, আমি আপনার কাছ থেকেই শিখতে চাই।’ অর্জুন যদি ওর বাবার অর্ধেকও অর্জন করতে পারে, ও সফল হবে।
 টেন্ডুলকারের অবসর...
মুহূর্তটি ছিল প্রচণ্ড আবেগময়। আমি ভিভিএস লক্ষ্মণকে কাঁদতে দেখেছি, ওর চোখে পানি দেখেছি। যে বিদায় সংবর্ধনা শচীন পেয়েছে, আমাদের সবার হূদয় ছুঁয়ে গেছে। এত ভালো, এত অসাধারণ, এত বিশাল একজনের জন্য এমন বিদায়ী আয়োজনই উচিত ছিল। আমি আগেও বলেছি, টেন্ডুলকারের বিদায় নেওয়া উচিত ব্যাট উঁচু করে। সেটাই হয়েছে, বিদায়ী ইনিংসটি গত তিন বছরে ওর সেরা ইনিংস।
 টেন্ডুলকারের বিদায়ী বক্তৃতা...
রাহুল দ্রাবিড় ও ভিভিএস লক্ষ্মণের পাশাপাশি আমার নামও উল্লেখ করেছে ও। আমাদের সবাইকে এটি দারুণভাবে গর্বিত করেছে। ক্যারিয়ারের বেশির ভাগ সময় আমরা একসঙ্গে খেলেছি, বিদায়বেলায় ওর কণ্ঠে আমাদের নাম শোনা ছিল বিশেষ কিছু। নিজের পরিবারের চেয়েও বেশি সময় আমরা একসঙ্গে কাটিয়েছি। ক্রিকেটটা আমরা শুধু সংখ্যা, রান বা রেকর্ডের জন্য খেলি না, খেলি অসাধারণ কিছু মুহূর্তের জন্যও। ভারতীয় ক্রিকেটের দারুণ সুখী একটি সময়ে আমরা একসঙ্গে খেলেছি। ভ্রমণটি ছিল সত্যি, সত্যিই বিশেষ কিছু। শচীনের কথাগুলো শুনে আবেগে সবাই কথা হারিয়ে ফেলেছিল। সত্যিই ছিল অসাধারণ!
 অবসর-পরবর্তী টেন্ডুলকার...
অনেকেই আমাকে এই প্রশ্নটি করেছে, করছে। জীবনটা ধারাভাষ্যের চেয়ে অনেক বড়, শচীন সব দরজাই খোলা রেখেছে। ধারাভাষ্যকার হলেও খুব ভালো করবে ও, তবে আমি চাইব এতে খুব বেশি সময় না দিক। ভারতীয় ক্রিকেটকে ওর কিছু ফিরিয়ে দেওয়ার আছে। তবে খেলা ছাড়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই এমন কিছু করা ঠিক হবে না, ও করবেও না বলে আমার ধারণা। তিন-চার বছর পর শচীনের উচিত নিজে থেকে এগিয়ে এসে ভারতীয় ক্রিকেটকেও সামনে এগিয়ে নেওয়া।

শচীন যখন সবার কথা বলল...ওর ভাই, বাবা-মা, স্ত্রী...এটাই বলে দিচ্ছিল ও কত বড় মাপের মানুষ। সবার জীবনেই এই মূল্যবোধগুলো থাকা প্রয়োজন। ২২ গজে গিয়ে ও উইকেটকে স্পর্শ করল, অসাধারণ মুহূর্ত ছিল সেটি। শচীনের এই দিকটা আমরাও কখনো দেখিনি, জানতে পারিনি।

রাহুল, ভিভিএস, শচীন বা কুম্বলেদের নেতৃত্ব দেওয়া কখনোই খুব কঠিন ছিল না। কারণ মানুষ হিসেবে ওরা সবাই খুব ভালো, সৎ। কেউ কখনো আমার জায়গাটি নিতে চায়নি। যেকোনো সমস্যায় নিশ্চিন্তে ওদের ওপর নির্ভর করতাম। আমার ভাগ্য ভালো যে গ্রেগ চ্যাপেল যুগের পর শচীনকে পাশে পেয়েছিলাম। ও যদি সত্যিটা প্রকাশ্যে না বলত, তাহলে হয়তো আর কখনো ক্রিকেটই খেলতে পারতাম না।

Internet Technology / Google and Microsoft agree measures to block abuse images

Leading search engine companies Google and Microsoft have agreed measures to make it harder to find child abuse images online.

As many as 100,000 search terms will now return no results that find illegal material, and will trigger warnings that child abuse imagery is illegal.

PM David Cameron has welcomed the move but said it must be delivered or he would bring forward new legislation.

Child protection experts have warned most images are on hidden networks.

In July, Mr Cameron called on Google and Microsoft's Bing - which together account for 95% of search traffic - to do more to prevent people getting access to illegal images.

He said they needed to ensure that searches which were unambiguously aimed at finding illegal images should return no results.

Now both companies have introduced new algorithms [software instructions] that will prevent searches for child abuse imagery delivering results that could lead to such material.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt says: "These changes have cleaned up the results for over 100,000 queries that might be related to the sexual abuse of kids.

"As important, we will soon roll out these changes in more than 150 languages, so the impact will be truly global."

The restrictions will be launched in the UK first, before being expanded to 158 other languages in the next six months.

Mr Schmidt said warnings - from both Google and charities - would be shown at the top of search results for more than 13,000 queries, making it clear that child abuse was illegal.

Google communications director Peter Barron said: "We hope this will make a difference in the fight against this terrible crime."

Microsoft, which in a rare display of unity is working closely with Google on this issue, says its Bing search engine will also produce clean results.

The company said it had always had a zero tolerance attitude to child sexual abuse content and had been putting in place stronger processes to prevent access since the summer.

Later on Monday, the two companies will join other internet firms at Downing Street for an Internet Safety Summit.

The prime minister said significant progress has been made since his speech in July calling for action.

At the time, he said that Google and Microsoft had said that blocking search results couldn't be done but he did not accept that.

Tory MP Claire Perry, Mr Cameron's adviser on the sexualisation and commercialisation of childhood, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the new measures were a "great step forward".

"We're not declaring victory but this is a massive step in the right direction," she said.

But Jim Gamble, former head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) told BBC Breakfast he did not think the measures would make any difference with regard to protecting children from paedophiles.

"They don't go on to Google to search for images. They go on to the dark corners of the internet on peer-to-peer websites," he said.

He said search engines had already been blocking inappropriate content and the latest move was just an enhancement of what was already happening.

A better solution would be to spend £1.5m on hiring 12 child protection experts and 12 co-ordinators in each of the police regions to hunt down online predators, he added.

NSPCC chief executive officer Peter Wanless said "a concerted and sustained effort from all quarters" was needed to stay one step ahead of sex offenders that were getting ever more technologically advanced.

"This is the key child protection issue of a generation - we cannot fail," he said.

Critics have accused the government of underfunding online child protection
A June report by Ceop highlighted how the "hidden internet" helped distributors of child abuse images to evade detection by using encrypted networks and other secure methods.

Google and Microsoft have agreed to work with the UK's National Crime Agency and the Internet Watch Foundation to try to tackle networks which host child abuse images.

The two companies are also using their technological expertise to help in the identification of abuse images.

Microsoft's PhotoDNA already allows a photo to be given a unique "fingerprint" which means it can be tracked as it is shared across the internet. Now Google has developed VideoID which does the same job with videos.

Both firms will provide this technology to the National Crime Agency and other organisations to help in the work of finding and detecting those behind the creating and sharing of child abuse images.

But critics have accused the government of underfunding online child protection.

Ceop, which is now part of the National Crime Agency, has been accused of missing a recent opportunity to identify hundreds of people downloading illegal images.

Police in Toronto revealed that in 2012 they had shared hundreds of names of British people with Ceop who were alleged to be customers of a Canadian firm that sold videos of young children.

The operation to close down the business saw hundreds of people arrested in Canada and around the world - but none in Britain.

On Friday, the National Crime Agency said Ceop had examined the material but it had been classified as being on a low level of seriousness. However, the agency has now ordered a review of Ceop's handling of the case.

Internet Technology / Police warn of 'ransom' spam targeting UK users

Tens of millions of UK internet users could be at risk from "ransom" email spam seemingly sent from financial institutions.

The email has an attachment that looks legitimate but is malware that encrypts computer files.

If the attachment is opened, a displayed countdown timer demands a ransom to decrypt the files.

Small to medium businesses seem to be the target and the National Crime Agency says there is significant risk.

Lee Miles, deputy head of the National Cyber Crime Unit, says: "The NCA are actively pursuing organised crime groups committing this type of crime. We are working in co-operation with industry and international partners to identify and bring to justice those responsible and reduce the risk to the public."

The malware installs a piece of "ransomware" called Cryptolocker on computers running the Windows operating system. The ransom demands that the user pay two Bitcoins, a virtual currency, that would be worth £536 to release the decryption key.

Reports suggest that people who have paid the ransom have not had their files decrypted and it has been impossible to restore encrypted files.

No guarantee
The NCA said it would never endorse the payment of a ransom to criminals and warns that there is no guarantee that the people behind the demand would honour the payments.

An NCCU investigation is seeking to identify the source of the email addresses used.

Computer users are being warned not to click on any suspicious attachments, to have updated antivirus software and to regularly back up files. If a computer is infected the advice is to disconnect it from the network and seek professional help to clean the device.

বাংলাদেশের জাহাজ নির্মাণ প্রতিষ্ঠান ওয়েস্টার্ন মেরিন সম্প্রতি ছয়টি অভ্যন্তরীণ কনটেইনারবাহী জাহাজ নির্মাণের আদেশ পেয়েছে। এ সব জাহাজের ড্রইং ও ডিজাইন জার্মানির শার লয়েড এবং বাংলাদেশ সমুদ্র পরিবহন অধিদপ্তর অনুমোদন করেছে।

আজ সোমবার এক বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে ওয়েস্টার্ন মেরিন জানিয়েছে, তারা ইতিমধ্যে ছয়টি কনটেইনারবাহী জাহাজ নির্মাণের চুক্তিপত্র সই করেছে। এর মধ্যে দুটি জাহাজ আগামী সেপ্টেম্বর থেকে পণ্য পরিবহন শুরু করতে পারবে। ওয়েস্টার্ন মেরিনের এসব জাহাজের দৈর্ঘ্য ৮২ মিটার, কনটেইনার পরিবহন ক্ষমতা ১৭৬টি, প্রতিটি জাহাজের ড্রাফট ৩ দশমিক ৫ মিটার এবং সর্বোচ্চ গতিবেগ ১০ নট।

চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর থেকে পানগাঁও রুটে চলাচলকারী জাহাজগুলোর নানা সীমাবদ্ধতা রয়েছে, যার মধ্যে জাহাজের দৈর্ঘ্য ও গভীরতা প্রধান। ওয়েস্টার্ন মেরিন নির্মিত জাহাজগুলোর এ ধরনের কোনো সীমাবদ্ধতা থাকবে না বলে জানিয়েছে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি।
প্রসঙ্গত, ৭ নভেম্বর প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা কেরানীগঞ্জে পানগাঁও অভ্যন্তরীণ কনটেইনার টার্মিনাল উদ্বোধন করেন। এর মাধ্যমে প্রথমবারের মতো কনটেইনারবাহী জাহাজ চট্টগ্রাম থেকে পানগাঁও পর্যন্ত আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে পরিবহন শুরু করে।

ঢাকা-চট্টগ্রাম মহাসড়কের ভয়াবহ যানজট নিরসনের লক্ষ্যে কনটেইনারের মাধ্যমে পণ্য সরবরাহ করলে খরচ ও সময় অনেক কমে আসবে। পানগাঁও টার্মিনালের কার্যক্রম দ্রুত শুরু করার লক্ষ্যে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ পানগাঁও এক্সপ্রেস, পানগাঁও সাকসেস ও পানগাঁও প্রোগ্রেস নামে তিনটি কনটেইনারবাহী জাহাজ কিনেছে এবং সরকার ইতিমধ্যে এই রুটে পরিবহনের জন্য সরকারি ও বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠানকে ৪০টি কনটেইনার লাইসেন্স ইস্যু করেছে।
