Business & Entrepreneurship / Time Management Strategies For Entrepreneurs.
« on: February 28, 2020, 08:22:55 PM »
Orobi Bakhtiar

As an entrepreneur, you are your own boss. To remain sane amidst the chaos, you must master the art of juggling crucial tasks and responsibilities without letting any of them fail. When it comes to entrepreneurial time management skills, the cracks show faster. Entrepreneurs with weaker time management skills will experience a direct impact on their revenues and profits.

Pursue the 2-Minute Rule

One of the biggest hurdles of an entrepreneur is procrastination during work. They tend to delay the task at hand due to a lack of focus or inadequate motivation. The purpose of this rule is to make you start as easy as possible. Want to finish editing your financial reports? Try setting your goal of logging onto your records. As you master the art of showing up, the first two minutes simply become a ritual for a larger routine.

Set your Prioritization and Delegation Quotient

Prioritization is knowing when to say "no" to things that don't necessarily need your attention at the moment. Try to sort your tasks in 4 categories: must do, should do, would do and could do. Make sure to delegate those tasks to the appropriate individuals.

Anticipate Disruptions

No matter how trivial or critical a task is, they all affect your overall time management. From a workplace mishap to a simple car breakdown in the middle of the road, it would be difficult to accommodate these contingencies if your schedule is packed to the brim with your duties. For this reason, you must keep some white space in your schedule for emergencies.

Use Technology to your Advantage

Work smarter, not harder. Modern entrepreneurs should know how to use technology to save some precious minutes. Automated bill payment systems, appointment reminders, and time tracking apps, along with analytics platforms, can help you save time. Gone are the days when you have to ask your assistant or manually input data. With the help of technology, you can simply put on autopilot to have one less thing to worry about.

Bangladesh's export and import activities will both be affected by the coronavirus pandemic but the country would not face much difficulty in attaining its GDP growth target of 8.20 per cent for this fiscal year, according to an official document.

The country clocked in 8.15 per cent GDP growth in fiscal 2018-19, the highest in the Asia Pacific region, riding on strong domestic demand and supportive fiscal and monetary policies.

The strong growth in the flow of remittance will contribute to furthering of domestic demand, said the finance ministry document prepared on the potential impact of the virus on the economy. The report was sent to the Prime Minister's Office recently.

Besides, the increased public expenditure under the annual development programme, the implementation of mega projects and increased investment owing to setting up of economic zones will have positive impact on the macroeconomic indicators.

"As a result, the GDP growth rate will maintain the current momentum," the report said.

The magnitude of the impact of the lethal, pneumonia-like virus, which is sweeping the globe, on Bangladesh's international trade of Bangladesh as well as overall commerce -- cannot be ascertained yet. In fact, the real impact would be clear in March, the document said.

"There is no doubt that there will be at least short-term impact. And if the outbreak persists for a long time, this will have far-reaching impact not only on Bangladesh but also on the global economy."

China is the biggest trading partner of Bangladesh and the biggest source for raw materials. The world's second largest economy accounted for more than a fifth of the country's imports of $56 billion in fiscal 2018-19, Bangladesh Bank data showed.

The barriers to imports from China, the epicentre of the virus, will hurt the export-oriented sectors and disrupt the supply chain. At the same time, it will have a negative impact on inflation.

China supplies 26 per cent of the active pharmaceuticals ingredients (APIs), the raw materials for medicines, of Bangladesh. If the API supply grinds to a halt, the sector's production will be interrupted. This will also impact pharmaceutical exports.

A number of mega infrastructure projects being implemented by Chinese companies will face problems.

The projects include Padma Bridge, the tunnel under the Karnaphuli river, the Bus Rapid Transit from Gazipur to Airport project, and the first and second phases of the Payra 1,320MW thermal power plant.

As a case study, the report stated the Padma bridge project. Two Chinese construction firms are implementing the main bridge construction part and the river dredging part respectively.

The contractor of the main bridge part is China Major Bridge Engineering Co. and its headquarters is located in Wuhan city in Hubei Province, the epicentre of the virus.

The headquarters has been working on a limited scale for a month and this has had some impact on the progress of Bangladesh's largest infrastructure project.

Most of the important construction materials are also sourced from China and a majority of the suppliers are based in Hubei Province.

As a result, the regular flow of imports of construction materials has been interrupted as many Chinese factories have closed their operations and the number of import vessels has dropped.

The top seven items that are imported from China are: yarn, woven textile fabrics, knit textile fabrics, garment accessories, mobile phone parts, apple and garlic.

The top four items are raw materials for the garment industry, which accounts for about 84 per cent of the country's exports.

In the last fiscal year, Bangladesh imported yarn, woven textile fabrics, knit textile fabrics and garment accessories worth $3 billion. Already $2 billion worth of products have been imported in the first seven months of this fiscal year.

Alternative sources for garment raw materials should be actively considered if the coronavirus outbreak disrupts supply, the report said.

However, the import of mobile parts, which soared last year, may suffer as only 27 per cent of last fiscal year's total imports amounting to $505 million came in the last seven months.

Bangladesh has imported a significant quantity of garlic from China so far this fiscal year. Importers are bringing in ginger, garlic and cinnamon from Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Egypt.

The import of garlic and ginger from China will be affected to some extent because of the coronavirus outbreak. But, there is no possibility of a supply shortage of the items in the local markets, the finance ministry report said.

China is not among the main export destinations of Bangladesh but it is an emerging market. Bangladesh's main export items to China are garment, jute and jute products, leather and leather products and crab and eel.

Half of the main exportable items destined for the country were shipped in the first seven months of the fiscal year. Given the trend, there is no big risk to exports to China, the report said.

As inbound ships from China are mandatorily berthed at the outer anchorage of Chattogram port for at least 10 days as part of quarantine, the offloading of imported items are being delayed.

Flights to and from China have been very limited and people's movement has been restricted. As a result, hotel bookings fell significantly.

Bangladesh receives 5-6 lakh tourists every year and of them, a major portion comes from China. Now, their arrival will go down hugely.

The overall trade may be affected to some extent because of the coronavirus.

If the overall export earnings go down in the current fiscal year, Bangladesh's current account deficit is in good shape compared with the previous two fiscal years thanks to increased remittance flow.

Money sent by migrant workers rose 21.49 per cent to $11.05 billion in the July-January period on the back of the 2 per cent cash incentive.

Bangladesh will also benefit from the declining petroleum prices in the international market.

Oil prices have fallen 14 per cent because of the pandemic. This may allow Bangladesh to save up to $450 million this fiscal year, helping the country keep its current account deficit and inflation lower.

The country imported crude oil and finished petroleum products worth about $3.3 billion in fiscal 2018-19.

Google and the EU have a big day in court Wednesday as the search engine giant enters a new phase of a legal saga that began a decade ago.

The Silicon Valley juggernaut is appealing a 2.4 billion euro ($2.6 billion) fine from 2017 that was the first in a series of major penalties from the European Commission, the EU's powerful anti-trust regulator.

Google has paid the fine and changed its behaviour, but the company will strongly condemn the decision in the EU's General Court as ill-founded and unfair.

"We're appealing the European Commission's 2017 Google Shopping decision because it is wrong on the law, the facts, and the economics," the company said in an email.

"Shopping ads have always helped people find the products they are looking for quickly and easily, and helped merchants to reach potential customers," it added.

The case opens what will certainly be a long season of court dates for Google and the EU, with two other fine decisions also under appeal at the Luxembourg-based court.

The EU and Google have been locked in battle since 2010 when the commission first looked into accusations that the search engine was squeezing rivals from results in order to promote ads and Google Shopping, a price comparison service.

For several years Brussels and the US giant sought a negotiated settlement, but the EU abruptly reversed course in 2014 after the intervention of member states and the arrival of Margrethe Vestager who took over as EU competition chief.

Vestager, a former Danish finance minister, quickly became known for her relentless pursuit of US tech giants that drew attention worldwide.

She has since racked up a total of $9 billion in fines against Google and has slapped Apple with a 13 billion euro tax bill that boss Tim Cook dismissed as  "political crap".

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday unveiled a foldable smartphone shaped like a large makeup compact and put 5G mobile network capabilities into all of its other flagship devices as it strives to retain the mantle of biggest global phone company.

Samsung's second attempt at a folding phone after a delayed rollout last year comes as the South Korean firm fends off its traditional rival in the premium smartphone market, Apple Inc , along with ascendant Chinese makers such as Huawei that have eaten into its sales in China and Europe. Huawei has only released its own folding phones in China, and Apple has yet to release a 5G iPhone of any kind.

Some analysts said sales of Samsung's new flagship series, the Galaxy S20 - which feature as many as four powerful cameras - will be slightly less than those of its predecessor, expecting foldable phones could eat into some of its sales.

Shares of Samsung, which generated 34 per cent of its profit last year from the mobile business and half from its chip business, rose 0.2 per cent in a flat wider market.

The Galaxy Z Flip, with folding glass, starts as a large square when closed and expands to look like most smartphones. It will start at $1,380 and be available from Friday in purple, gold and black, executives said in San Francisco.

Last year's Galaxy Fold, a larger unit that folds like a book and was panned for its construction, had a plastic screen and was priced at nearly $2,000.

Carriers are betting on 5G handsets to revive demand, as people keep their phones for as long as three to four years with the global smartphone market maturing, said Cristiano Amon, president of Qualcomm Inc, which supplied the chips for many of the Samsung devices.

The impact of novel coronavirus on Bangladesh-China bilateral trade is already visible and may seriously affect it in the long run, the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission has said.

"Due to the virus outbreak both the domestic and export trade of China has come to a standstill. Its impact has already started impacting Bangladesh's trade," the commission said.

The commission forwarded on Sunday a preliminary report on coronavirus, or COVID-19, epidemic to the ministry of commerce where it also stated that Bangladesh's major export sectors have already been affected.

Commerce ministry officials said the report will be placed at a meeting at the prime minister's office (PMO) Tuesday with principal secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus in the chair.

The meeting will discuss about the possible way out relating to the crisis on goods export and import from China and neighbouring countries caused due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In the report, the commission said, nearly 60 per cent fabrics of woven sub-sector were being imported from China. "The negative impact of the coronavirus on this sector has already started becoming apparent."

It said some 15 to 20 per cent raw materials and 80 to 85 per cent dyeing chemicals and accessories of knitwear sector comes from China. "The supply chain of these items is already facing disruption."

The commission said some 60 to 65 per cent of country's total finished leather and leather goods is being exported to China. "The sector may incur loss worth Tk 30 billion due to the coronavirus outbreak."

The report said some 40 per cent raw material of garment accessories and packaging manufacturing industry worth $1.6 billion is being imported from China per annum. "Due to the supply chain disruptions the stakeholders fear a loss worth Tk 15 billion."

According to the report each month Bangladesh imports some 200 containers of cosmetics and toiletries worth Tk 750 million from China. Due to the virus outbreak import and shipment of the items remained suspended.

The report said some 80 to 85 per cent machinery and spare parts of electrical merchandise manufacturing industry was being imported from China. The commission is now calculating the possible loss from the shipment suspension due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Bangladeshi jute spinners export goods worth $5.32 billion annually to China which now remained suspended due to the spread of virus, the commission said.

The report said the annual import of raw materials of printing industry from China stands at $1.8 billion. "Due to the present shipment suspension, the loss may reach up to $3.6 billion.

Bangladesh annually imports 25 containers of medical instruments and hospital equipment from China. At the same time, some 95 per cent raw materials and ready products of eyewear industry also being imported from China which now remained suspended.

The report also said Bangladesh's computer and computer accessories sector is largely dependent on China. Due to the supply chain disruption prices of raw materials, equipments, and accessories in the local market have already started to go up.

"Meeting demand of these items would not be possible unless supply system becomes normal," the report said.

Some 80 per cent television sets, refrigerators, mobile phone sets, ovens, chargers and other electronics items comes from China. Due to the shipment suspension prices of the items in Bangladesh market already started rising, it said.

The commission said export of crab and eel fish from Bangladesh to China remained suspended since January 25. Unless the stockpiled items can be exported the financial loss may cross Tk 4.0 billion, it added.

The raw materials of plastic industry, its machineries and spare parts like injection moulding, printing, and extrusion machine parts are being imported from China. The sector is facing serous threat due to the supply chain disruption, the report mentioned.

A senior commerce ministry official told the FE the possible impact of coronavirus outbreak was yet to be fully calculated but the preliminary assumption shows a large affect on country's export-import trade and merchandise industry.

He said China is top sourcing partner for Bangladesh with annual import of $13.85 billion while export to the country is around $831 million. "Any long lasting supply chain disruption with China may have catastrophic impact on our economy," he said.

The Bangladesh Bank has said depositors’ money in banks and financial institutions will be more secure after implementation of proposed ‘Deposit Protection Act, 2020’.

BB's chief spokesperson M Serajul Islam came up with the statement while addressing a press conference at the Bangladesh Bank (BB) headquarters in Dhaka on Wednesday, reports BSS.

“The ‘Bank Company Act’ and the ‘Deposit Insurance Act’ ensure the security of depositors. If the new law is made effective, the depositors of the financial institutions and the scheduled banks will be more secure,” he said.

The central bank official also urged all not to be anxious or frightened by the reports published in the different media recently about provision of repayment of deposits from any bankrupt bank.

Under the existing law, he informed, if the central bank declare bankrupt to any bank, the depositors money will be paid from the ‘Deposit Insurance Trust Fund’ within a hundred and eighty days.

As per the deposited money in the current insurance fund, Serajul Islam said, 92 per cent depositors’ accounts are fully insured.

Moreover, he said, in the bank company act, there is a clear provision for repayment of all deposits from the assets of the bank in case a scheduled bank falls.

As per the proposed ‘Deposit Protection Act, he said, the government is likely to double the amount of insurance coverage. If the new provision will come to effect, about 96 per cent of the depositors will be fully insured, he added.

The BB chief spokesperson expected that 100 per cent deposit will be insured in future as the ‘Deposit Protection Trust Fund’ invests in the public Treasury bond sector and the profit from the investment and the premium paid by the scheduled banks increases day by day.
