Tennis / Nobody beats Sharapova 17 times in a row -- except Serena
« on: July 10, 2015, 01:12:06 PM »
London (AFP) - Thirty-five years after Vitas Gerulaitis famously exclaimed that nobody beats him 17 times in a row, Maria Sharapova now knows how the flamboyant American felt.
Gerulaitis was celebrating ending his eight-year, 16-match losing streak to Jimmy Connors when he finally turned the tables on his nemesis in Madison Square Garden in 1980, a feat which allowed him to issue his famous tongue-in-cheek public cry of defiance.

Unfortunately for Sharapova, there appears no end in sight to her record of failure against Williams.

Thursday's 6-2, 6-4 loss to the world number one in the Wimbledon semi-finals was her 17th in succession and 18th overall at the hands of the American.

The Russian's only two wins came way back in 2004, one in the Wimbledon final and the other in the end of year championships.

Since then, Serena has won all the on-court skirmishes and most of the off-court disputes.

Tennis / Serena Williams owns Maria Sharapova
« on: July 10, 2015, 01:07:44 PM »
Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova for the 17th straight time on Thursday, breezing into the Wimbledon finals with a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Considering these are the two best players of their generation, the extent of Serena's decade-long domination of Sharapova is astonishing. Serena hasn't just gotten the better of her biggest rival; she's beaten her more often than she has beaten anyone else, and she has done it without mercy.

1. Serena is 18-2 all-time against Sharapova. She hasn't lost to Sharapova since 2005, when she was 23:

2. Since their rivalry boiled over in June 2013 — with Sharapova calling Serena a home wrecker before apologizing — Serena hasn't lost a set to her.
3. Since 2010, Serena has taken 26 of 27 sets off Sharapova.
4. Serena has knocked Sharapova out of six Grand Slams. If it weren't for Serena, Sharapova would have at least three more Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold medal.

5. Serena has beaten Sharapova 18 times, her most wins against a single top-10 opponent. She has played her sister 26 times, but still hasn't beaten her as often as she's beaten Sharapova.

Football / Messi devastated by new defeat in final
« on: July 08, 2015, 02:10:49 PM »
Buenos Aires (AFP) - Argentina is gripped by a debate over superstar Lionel Messi, who was devastated by losing the Copa America final and has withdrawn into a shocked isolation.
Some obervers in his home country say criticism fired at Messi could force him to take a break from national duty.

The 28-year-old football genius left the pitch ashen-faced after Argentina lost the Copa America to Chile in a 4-1 penalty shootout in Santiago on Saturday. The scenes were reminiscent of last year's World Cup final when Germany beat Argentina in extra time. Then 'Leo' left in tears. Messi first tasted a major defeat in 2007 when Argentina lost 3-0 to old rivals Brazil in the Copa final.

Messi finally posted a statement on his facebook account late Monday.

"There's nothing more painful in football than losing a final," he said.

"But I don't want to leave it any longer to say thank you to everyone who has always supported us and continued to during the tough moments."

Despite his huge success with Barcelona, Messi is now going through tough moments as is a country which has not won a major title for 22 years.

126

It has been a sad couple of days for the world's best player.

Even after a Treble-winning season with Barcelona, Lionel Messi landed in Chile with a big chip on his shoulder: to win a major professional title with his national team, Argentina. After falling short one year earlier at the World Cup despite a Golden Ball performance, Messi really wanted to lead his team to a Copa América championship, and to lift the trophy as the team captain.

Reunited with former Blaugrana coach Tata Martino, Leo got to play a similar role to the one he has now with the Catalans: coming from right to center, joining the midfield, and working as a creator for the likes of Sergio Agüero and Ángel Di María. Messi had a very good tournament, especially in the semifinal against Paraguay, where he destroyed the opposition. With solid contributions from some of his peers, he reached the final and was ready to win a title.

But then, he met the hosts, and ran into a brick wall of a Chile defense that played at the highest possible level against the greatest footballer we have ever seen. Well (and individually) marked, Messi only created one big chance, at the last minute of regulation, that should have won the game had Gonzalo Higuaín been able to score the easiest goal ever.

The match went to penalty kicks, and Messi did his part, scoring the opening goal with ease. But then he watched two terrible misses by Higuaín and Banega, and Chile won its first Copa América title at home.

Obviously, Messi was devastated after the game, and he took to Facebook to comment on his feelings after the result:

"There's nothing more painful in football than losing a final. But I don't want to leave it any longer to say thank you to everyone who has always supported us and continued to during the tough moments."

It was painful for your fans as well, Leo. Thanks for fighting. You're awesome.

Tennis / Serene Federer in seventh heaven at Wimbledon
« on: July 07, 2015, 11:00:59 AM »

It was a case of 7-7-7 for Roger Federer at Wimbledon on Monday as he fired down seven aces, won seven games on the trot and sat through a seven-minute injury timeout in an otherwise serene 6-2 6-2 6-3 win over Roberto Bautista Agut.
The Spaniard became the latest man to fall under Federer's serving spell as the suave Swiss flung out winners here, there and everywhere to glide into his 45th grand slam quarter-final.

Football / Messi fails again with Argentina's national team
« on: July 05, 2015, 05:48:40 PM »
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Lionel Messi has come up short again in his attempt to succeed with Argentina's national team.
Messi looked nothing like the star that he is with Barcelona on Saturday, and Argentina lost the Copa America final to Chile 4-1 on penalties, extending its 22-year title drought. The four-time world player of the year scored his team's lone goal in the penalty shootout, but had a lackluster performance in regulation and extra time, failing to spark his teammates to victory. Saturday's disappointment comes less than a year since he also failed to lead Argentina to victory in the World Cup final, and will ignite even more criticism by those who say Messi doesn't play as well with the national team as he does with his club.

Messi helped Argentina win the Under-20 World Cup in 2005, as well as the gold medal in the Beijing Games in 2008, but is yet to lead the senior team to a title.

Before the runner-up finish at last year's World Cup in Brazil, Messi hadn't been able to lead Argentina past the quarterfinals of football's showcase event, with early eliminations in 2006 and 2010. He also was in the Copa America team that lost the 2007 final to Brazil, and was eliminated by eventual champion Uruguay in the quarterfinals of the tournament at home in 2011.

''A result, or even a loss in a final, will not change what Messi represents to the rest of the world,'' said Chile's Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli, adding that it was key to stop Messi and his teammates in Saturday's final.
''If Argentina had been able to take control of the match at some point, Messi was going to make sure that we noticed why he is the best player in the world,'' Sampaoli said.

Messi didn't play well in the start of the Copa America but was improving match after match. He was coming off a remarkable performance in the 6-1 rout of Paraguay in the semifinals, when he didn't score but helped set up five goals.

On Saturday, he made passing mistakes and several times was easily disarmed by defenders, failing to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. In the one time he made a decent run past the defense, Argentina nearly broke the deadlock just before the final whistle in regulation, but Gonzalo Higuain was not able capitalize on a dangerous cross into the area.

The next chance Messi will have to win a title with Argentina is in next year's centennial Copa America in the United States. Before that, the 31-year-old playmaker will help his nation in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Football / All eyes on Messi at Copa America climax
« on: July 04, 2015, 11:07:27 PM »
Copa America, final 20151
Santiago (AFP) - Lionel Messi and Argentina will be chasing a first major title in 22 years Saturday when they face hosts Chile in a dream Copa America final in Santiago. The three-week South American football showpiece reaches its climax at the Estadio Nacional with Argentina aiming to win their first title since 1993, 12 months after defeat in last year's World Cup final.

Chile are anxious to shed their unwanted tag as the perennial nearly men of South American football, ending decades of hurt by winning a first Copa America crown after nearly a century of failure.

Argentina captain Messi has declared himself "desperate" to win an international title after winning every honor at club level with Barcelona.

Coach Gerardo Martino said Friday victory for Argentina was almost an "obligation".

"It's very difficult to imagine what would have happened if we had not reached the final," Martino said. "In reality the expectations this group of players generates are so great that sometimes they think winning is an obligation."

Argentina head into the final in buoyant mood after thrashing Paraguay 6-1 in the semi-finals.

Martino said Argentina's players had been told to take the emotion out of what is expected to be a highly charged occasion.
"There is always an emotional factor in the final, but the guys must ignore that. These are the kinds of games where there is so much tied up in the result that you can sometimes change the way you approach the match.

"But what will bring us the title is to do things as usual."

Football / Copa final 'not war' says Mascherano
« on: July 02, 2015, 12:39:46 PM »
Santiago (AFP) - Argentina star Javier Mascherano called for calm on Wednesday as the countdown to this weekend's Copa America final against fierce rivals Chile got under way.

Two teams desperate to succeed will collide in Santiago on Saturday with hosts Chile aiming to end nearly a century of failure by winning a major tournament for the first time in front of an expectant home crowd.

Argentina meanwhile are burning with desire to win a first title in 22 years, determined that one of the most talented generations of players the country has ever produced does not suffer another disappointment.

The high stakes will carry an additional edge thanks to the historical rivalry between the neighboring nations, who in the past have been at loggerheads over various territorial and diplomatic disputes.

But Mascherano was adamant that politics should not poison what is expected to be a highly charged sporting encounter.

"I hope that people can understand that football is a sport, not war," Mascherano said.

"The past is the past. We must not put sport in the middle of politics. Chile and Argentina are brother countries, we have to show mutual respect," the defensive midfielder added.

"If we stoop to aggression and violence, we lose that message of respect. Sport is about trying to be healthy and having fun, not a war."

Mascherano's words were echoed by Chile defender Eugenio Mena.

"Everyone's going to be watching this final so it's important that the two teams show respect," Mena said.

Argentina set the stage for Saturday's showpiece with a scintillating display to destroy Paraguay 6-1 in Tuesday's semi-final, with skipper Lionel Messi producing a virtuoso individual performance.

Chile defender Jose Rojas said his team-mates would need to raise their performance against Argentina.

"They are one of the best teams in the world, there is no doubt about that," Rojas said.

"But being the favourites doesn't guarantee anything. We are playing at home, with our people behind us, and we have something to say."

Rojas also urged Chile to give their all against the Argentines.

"You have to throw all the meat on the grill," Rojas said.

"Argentina is strong but nothing is impossible. We have hunger and desire to achieve something important for our country."   (yahoo news)

CONCEPCION, Chile (AP) -- Lionel Messi is a step closer to finally breaking through with Argentina.

The Barcelona star heads into the Copa America final with a chance to end his nation's 22-year title drought, and prove that he can replicate his club-level success with the national team.

Messi thrived in leading Argentina to a 6-1 rout of Paraguay in the semifinals on Tuesday, setting up a final against host Chile on Saturday.

Messi didn't score but helped set up five goals, including a spectacular run past several defenders from near midfield.

It is Messi's and Argentina's second chance in a year to lift a trophy, and the first since the World Cup final in Brazil.

''We really want to win this one, we are very hopeful,'' the 28-year-old playmaker said through a translator.

Argentina hasn't won a significant trophy since the 1993 Copa America, when Messi was aged six.

He lost the 2007 final to Brazil in Venezuela, and was eliminated in the 2011 quarterfinals at home by Uruguay

Victory on Saturday would give Argentina its 15th Copa America title, tying Uruguay as the tournament's most successful team.

Messi has won nearly every title possible with Barcelona but nothing with Argentina's senior squad, which has always prompted a lot of criticism against him. Many Argentines complain that with the national team he has never played as well as he does with Barcelona.

''I really want to win something with the national team,'' said Messi, a four-time world player of the year.

Although Messi helped Argentina's Under-23s win the Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing, his first major tournament was the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where the team fell in the quarterfinals. It was the same result at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and the great run in the 2014 World Cup ended with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Germany in the final at Maracana Stadium.

Messi didn't have a good start in this year's Copa America, but improved. He played well in the quarterfinal victory over Colombia, and was even better in Tuesday's semifinal, although he didn't score. His only goal came off a penalty kick in the opener.

''The scoring chances that he creates almost count as a goal,'' Argentina coach Gerardo Martino said. ''I don't see him worried. On the contrary, I see him happy. He doesn't need to be the team's goalscorer to be happy.''

Messi said he may be saving his goals for the final.

''Hopefully it will happen,'' he said. ''It's important that we reached our first goal, which was to reach the final.''

---

This story has been corrected to show that Messi is a four-time world player of the year, not a three-time winner.
