Ranking / Ranking of a program of a University
« on: November 08, 2023, 01:15:20 PM »
Improving the ranking of a program such as a master's or bachelor's or BBA/MBA programmes  involves various strategic actions and continuous efforts. It is not easy but a journey. Here are some general steps that educational institutions often take to enhance their program's ranking:

Academic Excellence: Focus on maintaining high academic standards. Ensure the quality of education, faculty, and curriculum.

Research and Publications: Encourage faculty and students to engage in research activities and publish papers in reputable journals. High-quality research often positively influences rankings.

Student Experience: Enhance the overall student experience by providing excellent facilities, resources, and student support services. Positive feedback from students can contribute to a program's reputation.

Industry Connections: Foster strong ties with businesses and industry leaders. Partnerships, internships, and guest lectures from industry professionals can enhance the program's practical relevance.

Alumni Engagement: Maintain an active alumni network. Successful alumni can contribute to the program's reputation and may participate in mentorship programs or guest lectures.

Global Exposure: Offer opportunities for international exposure, such as study abroad programs, international student exchange, or partnerships with foreign universities.

Accreditations: Seek accreditations from renowned accreditation bodies. Accredited programs often have higher credibility.

Innovation: Stay updated with the latest trends in business education. Integrate innovative teaching methods and technologies into the curriculum.

Graduate Placement: Focus on helping graduates secure meaningful employment after completing the program. High placement rates and successful alumni in prominent positions can boost the program's reputation.

Public Relations and Marketing: Promote the program effectively through various channels. Highlight achievements, faculty expertise, and successful alumni stories.

Continuous Improvement: Regularly assess the program's strengths and weaknesses. Use feedback from students, alumni, and industry partners to make necessary improvements.

We should remember rankings are influenced by various factors, and it's essential to focus on providing a high-quality education and positive student experience. Over time, these efforts can lead to improved rankings and a strong reputation for a specific master's program. To be continued

Management became a science rather than a profession. Fifty years ago, as explained in the 2005 HBR article How Business Schools Lost Their Way, business schools shifted their focus from creating managers and leaders to creating new knowledge.
This shift had profound implications. Business schools rewarded professors for publishing their research in academic journals, and their curriculum began to reflect the narrow focus of the faculty. Business school professors became increasingly disconnected from practicing managers and leaders. Now, it became clear that business schools had swung too far in one direction.

Motivation / Warren Buffet's Tips for Entrepreneurial Success

Warren Buffet's 10 tips for success

1. Find your passion
You are lucky in life when you find it and you can’t guarantee you are going to find it on your first job, but once you find it, your life will change. Take the job you would take if you were independently wealthy, you are going to do well at it.

2. Hire well
It’s no secret that hiring is one of the biggest challenges of managing and growing a creative team. Remember that your people are your greatest asset.

3. Don’t care what others think
“Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.” – Lao Tzu. It’s normal to want to be liked and accepted.  However, this leads to people worrying too much about what others are thinking about them. This kind of excessive worrying can have a negative effect on your life. Do not let it prevent you from living your life to the fullest potential. Once you give up caring about other people’s opinion and thoughts, you will discover the real you, and that freedom will be like taking a breath for the first time.

4. Read, read, read
If you‘re one of countless people who don’t make a habit of reading regularly, you are missing out countless opportunities daily: The more you read the smarter you get. I remember reading last month that if you read one book a month on the same topic for 2 years, you will become part of the top 5 % experts in that topic, and that’s the real power of reading. Here are some of the books that Warren Buffett recommends – “Business Adventures: Twelve Classic Tales from the World of Wall Street” by John Brooks, “The Essays of Warren Buffett” by Warren Buffett, “The Intelligent Investor” by Benjamin Graham

5. Have a margin of safety
The majority of investors will encounter various stumbling blocks and bad luck over their investing lifetime; a margin of safety will provide them with some protection in terms of preservation of capital when the going gets tough.

6. Have a competitive advantage
“Capitalism is all about somebody coming in and trying to take the castle. Now what you need is a castle that has durable competitive advantage” – Warren Buffet

A competitive advantage is an advantage over competitors gained by offering consumers greater value, either by means of lower prices or by providing greater benefits and service that justifies higher prices.

7. Schedule for your personality
Warren Buffet doesn’t like meetings, but he is building his businesses around his personality, doing it the way he prefers and enjoys. So find your productive mode, find your pace, find the sweet spot. You will be most productive once you find what works best for you.

8. Always be competing
The biggest business killer – complacency. Once you get that feeling of self-satisfaction, that’s when it gets dangerous, that’s when your competitors will run you over. So always strive for growth, always be on the move, otherwise your competition is going to outcompete you!

9. Model success
You can’t do it on your own, get that out of your head. There is one thing that successful people have in common; mentors. Having a mentor is said to be one of the most important keys to success. I believe this is especially true early on but is imperative at any point in your career.

10. Give unconditional love
In his profile for The Great Minds of Investing, Mr. Buffett speaks candidly about the most important reason for his success: the love and support he received from his father, Howard Buffett, a U.S. Congressman whom he revered. “My dad believed in me,” Mr. Buffett explains. “What I basically got from my father is unconditional love. Unconditional love is huge in this world … Whatever I did, he was all for it. It didn’t matter how much money I made or anything like that. It was just, ‘Do your best in whatever you take on.’ ”

Business incubators are organizations geared toward speeding up the growth and success of startup and early stage companies. They’re often a good path to capital from angel investors, state governments, economic-development coalitions and other investors.

Many have potential capital to invest, or links to potential funding sources. There’s access to services such as accountants and lawyers -- not to mention invaluable coaching and networking connections through the staff and other entrepreneurs at the incubator..

Achieving Goals / Goal-setting
« on: March 12, 2014, 12:52:13 PM »
1. First, decide exactly what you want to do in future. Clarity is the starting point of great success. Which career will you love to pursue after 5 to 10 years?

2. Second, write it down, in detail, and set a deadline. Set sub-deadlines if necessary.

3. Third, determine the additional knowledge, skills, and abilities you will need to achieve your career goal—and how you will acquire them.

4. Fourth, determine the obstacles and difficulties you will have to overcome to reach your career goal, and organize them in order of size and importance.

5. Fifth, determine the people, groups, and organizations whose help you will require, and decide what you will have to do for them to earn their assistance.

6. Sixth, make a detailed plan, broken down by activity and organized by priority and sequence. What is most important? What must be done first? What must be done before something else is done?

7. Seventh, how you are going to take action on your career plan immediately. How you are going to do something every day to move toward your goal. _Brian Tracy

Journalism & Mass Communication / Why Journalism and Mass Comunication?
« on: December 11, 2013, 04:06:06 PM »
"The first thing on a student’s mind after finishing, high school is to step into the rat race of conventional wisdom by enrolling into a university. Most universities offer courses that are directly related to a specific degree with little thought to any other subjects.

Bachelors in Business Administration, for instance, one of the most popular subjects to study in university, will allow students to take only business courses without requiring a basic understanding of philosophy or literature. But if we could think of an educational model which aims to train a student not only for a specific job but for a valuable set of employable skills, a liberal arts education would fit the description. The prime objective of higher studies should be to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of people which a liberal arts education is supposed to do.

A liberal arts education is a system of learning that will help students to be free thinking, well rounded individuals. Liberty and flexibility are at the core of a liberal arts education.

The model offers courses from general areas of study-philosophy, mathematics, literature, art history, economics, science, and so on rather than focusing only in an applied or specialised field.
So what is so great about a liberal arts education?

Sadia Afrin, a student of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), believes that she is privileged to have studied in a liberal arts university. “I never thought that I could learn about different subjects like arts, humanities, literature, journalism, while studying CSE. Who would have thought that a student of CSE can quote lines from Shakespeare? I even worked as a reporter for my university’s newspaper,” says Afrin.
For one thing, the cross-disciplinary, integrated learning that it offers sets it apart from any other specialised discipline. Jim Leach, a faculty member of University of Iowa in Annapolis Group Conference describes liberal arts education this way: “The most meaningful discovery in a liberal-arts education is that everything is related to everything else, though we may not know it at the time. Maturation is the tying together the threads of learning.”
Smaller classrooms encourage interaction between students and teachers and group discussions. Photo Courtesy: Asian University for Women

“The breadth of this education is practical skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, writing, communication skills whereas the depth of this education lies in different subjects like science, arts and culture, language and many more,”says Dr Fahima Aziz, Vice Chancellor of AUW. “What a liberal arts college/university does is it provides an integrated study by incorporating the breadth and depth and thus provides a well-rounded education.”
Apart from offering broad-based interdisciplinary courses the model gives students the flexibility of being able to declare a major after having had a taste of many different subjects. “This model highlights on a broad education by offering different general education courses before students choose their majors in their second or third year,” says Juditha Ohlmacher, the advisor of Student Affairs of ULAB. “Even after choosing their majors students have the option to take different general education courses across a broad range of options and study them in an integrated manner.”

Ideally, a liberal arts education also makes sure the student acquires certain skills and basic values that will benefit both the individual and the community.

Safra Ghouse, a liberal arts graduate of AUW believes that the education that she has received is transformative and is not only confined to her classroom. “We talk about instilling humanity and peace in our community sitting in the classroom”, she says. But what’s the use of education if we do not go through experiential learning and try to bring about the change that we talk about?

“We have gained leadership skills and how to critically analyze a situation. So when we went back to Sri Lanka for our summer vacation we helped to bridge the gap between two communities of Sinhalese and Tamils of two villages. Because of the prolonged civil disturbance between Tamils and Sinhalese, they were reluctant to talk to each other and share each other’s sufferings. We helped them to be in each other shoes, and tried to put an end to the communal dispute of those two villages,” she elaborates. “Along with the local communities we also tried to help ex-combatants and their family by providing them medicines, food, shelter and clothes. The change that we attempted to bring about might not be very big, but I personally feel satisfied that my education adds some worth to the community around me.”

In fact in a liberal arts university students gain a broad base knowledge along with analytical and communications skills, problem solving, evaluative and critical thinking abilities and the skill of writing succinctly, reflective reading skills, the ability to pose meaningful questions and ethical decision making, the ability to cooperate with each other to work in a team. In short, it teaches the student how to learn.

This kind of learning is facilitated by smaller classrooms (not seen in conventional universities) to encourage interaction between students and teachers and for group discussions. Activities outside the classroom, field trips, projects, internships and part time jobs are part of the process ensuring that the student is constantly intellectually stimulated and motivated. Extra curricular activities, a definite emphasis on sports and physical education are part of the model. Not all liberal arts universities need to follow the similar features, many of them could evolve according to their necessity and still could maintain the essence of a liberal arts college. “Unlike a lecture-based and exam-centric educational system that we mostly see in Asian context, liberal arts education prepares students to learn throughout the life,” says Dr Aziz.

The goal of higher studies is to equip an individual with an open mind, an ethical approach to life, and consequently to learn to be a better citizen.

The education that teaches to live, not only to earn a living

Liberal arts aims to produce ‘intentional learners’, which means learners who truly understand the value of study and how education is supposed to be used. The goal of this education is also to produce such learners who can adapt to new environments, integrate knowledge from different sources and continue learning throughout their lives. Most importantly, liberal arts does not prepare a student for a particular kind of job, rather it cultivates a significant set of employability skills in a student which could make them competent for a multiple kind of jobs.

“One of the main goals of liberal arts to make the learners flexible, says Juditha. “People who enter the workforce today might be playing different roles over the course of their careers. They might not stick to the same career throughout their life, liberal arts education gives their minds the flexibility to explore and cope with the new environments.”
The Fallacy and the Reality
Being a new concept in Bangladeshi context there are a few misconceptions regarding liberal arts.

Myth 1: A Liberal Arts degree means a Bachelor in Arts.
There is a widely circulated fallacy regarding liberal arts that it specifically refers to the fine arts and humanities. In reality, liberal arts could be integrated into any discipline, including science and business. Regardless of a student’s major, liberal arts curriculum intends to develop intellectual capacities through an integrated education as opposed to a professional or vocational education system. A student can choose from a great variety of disciplines, for example credits in liberal arts education might include but is not limited to courses in the humanities (history, art, literature, writing, philosophy, religious studies, theatre, performance studies), the natural science, environmental science, computer science, mathematics, economics, social sciences as well as for interdisciplinary courses involving any of those disciplines and many more. Hence a liberal arts student can be a Bachelor in Science too.
“This school of thought believes that a student should be well acquainted with different discipline in order to get a well-bounded education, says Juditha. Hence a student who is majoring in Literature for example, has to take courses from mathematics or economics too or the vice-versa.”

Extra curricular activities, a definite emphasis on sports and physical education are part of a liberal arts education

Myth 2: Liberal arts education is applicable only for America! In Bangladesh we need individuals with professional skills.
“When my relatives ask me what we study and I tell them about our broad curriculum the reaction that I get is not very positive most of the time”, Tanzila Khan, a second year student says. “Many of them believe that in Bangladesh we need to be specialized in medicine, engineering or architecture to secure a good future. Studying liberal arts seems a luxury to them which will not get us anywhere.”

Another misguided belief about liberal arts is it won’t be applicable for our cultural setting. Niaz Ahmed Khan believes that, “We are going through an unstable time when we are losing our morals and beliefs. Since liberal arts trains our minds towards wise action, the need of having liberal arts graduates will always be there.” A recent publication from Harvard reveals that many Asian countries like China, Hong Kong, Singapore are moving towards liberal arts colleges recognizing the value of this education. If these countries can successfully implement this model in their education system, then why can’t we?
“Education is not culture-specific”, says Dr Fahim Hussain, a faculty member of AUW. “In Bangladesh too, we need students who can engage in critical discussions, practice their leadership skills and analyze a situation from different perspectives.”

Myth 3: A liberal arts graduate will have a hard time getting a job.
Surprisingly, the value of liberal arts graduates is often underestimated by people. In reality, a liberal arts student can enjoy more advantages than a professional degree recipient! Unlike other areas of studies which are in high demand in our country, the programmes in the liberal arts often don’t train students for work within a specific discipline. Moreover, the graduates of liberal arts programmes have skills like problem solving and critical thinking that are of great value on the job.

“These days while the job market is very competitive, there are a certain set of skills which help us to differentiate from one candidate to the other” says Raiyan Alam, project coordinator of Human Resource department of a pharmaceutical company. “Other than the professional proficiency, skills like problem solving, critical thinking, leadership and communication skills are important too in a real world setting.
“In the real world complexity, an engineer or a businessman needs to learn subjects outside their narrow specialty too. That’s what liberal arts program does,” Juditha opines.

“Our students enjoy the opportunity of getting experience outside their fields through different summer internships,” says Dr Hussain. “By showcasing their skills of critical reasoning, writing, presenting and most importantly their adaptability to different situations, they could prove how different concepts regarding liberal arts are flawed. While an engineering school may produce computer science graduates, a liberal arts school produces computer science graduates who are endowed with leadership and problem solving skills. That’s what sets them apart from a professional degree holder,” he says positively.

The need for specialized education can never be underestimated, yet a liberal arts education provides a wider platform for students who would like to explore interests different from their majors. The goal is to equip an individual with an open mind, an ethical approach to life, and consequently to learn to be a better citizen and human being.

Motivation / 7 Secrets of Success: Alissa Finerman
« on: June 01, 2013, 03:21:05 PM »
Things happen when you are specific. Vague goals = vague results!

Don’t worry if your goals seem crazy to others, just get them out on paper and take a small step. The process of writing your goals is very empowering and helps to generate great ideas. Often, the crazy ideas are the ones that change the world.
7 Strategies for Success

1. Start with the Ideal Situation

This is your chance to dream. Imagine you have a blank slate, and you can be and do whatever you choose. No obstacles, just pure potential. Start with this image of possibilities and then work backwards to see what’s doable right now. Don’t focus on the obstacles when you are getting started. Yes, I am encouraging you to leave the mortgage, kids, and other responsibilities alone for right now. Think about what the ideal vision is for you. Then figure out what you need to do to make it happen.

2. Write Down Your Goals

When you write down your goals, you start to see where you want to go, and it’s easier to make decisions because you have a destination. Many people like to keep everything in their mind instead of put it down on paper. Well, let me tell you a little secret about these folks: They are also the people who are more likely not to follow through on their goals. Clarity can emerge from writing your dreams on paper.

3. Determine Why the Goal Is Important

Be very clear why you are setting this goal. Is it because your family wants you to do something, or does the goal matter to you? Please leave the “should” goals behind.

Is losing weight really important to you? Are you willing to make other sacrifices to make this goal a reality? Or does work really take priority over relationships? Often, we have to make difficult choices when setting goals. Yes, that’s part of the process as well. When goals are important to you, they will align with your values (i.e. adventure, respect, honesty, connecting, humor, etc.).

The question is will you feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment when you achieve the goal. If not, it’s not the right goal. For example, you may have a great goal to be the market leader in your business. But if you really want to be connected to your daughter and coach her soccer team, then achieving your business goal may or may not leave you feeling fulfilled. These are the questions you need to consider. Yes, they are tough!

4. Craft Clear-Cut Goals That Add Meaning to Your Life

Many of us think vague goals are our friends, but actually, they just derail us in our mission. If you’re planning to get better at golf, be a better leader, or exercise more in the new year, you will need to be much more specific. Say your goal out loud and honestly ask yourself if it’s clear what you are trying to do. Once you have a clear goal, you need to double check that it’s something you really care about (rather than your family, friends, or partner).

Many goals appear specific, but they are not. Examples of common vague goals:

Get in shape. Does this mean lower your blood pressure, have consistent energy throughout the day, lose fifteen pounds by your college reunion, or run your first 5k race?
Build my business. Do you mean open a second store, be featured in Success Magazine, increase revenue by twenty percent, or get five new clients?
Spend more time with friends. Do you mean have dinner once a week or schedule a four-day ski trip?

Things happen when you are specific. Vague goals = vague results!

5. Pursue a Goal That Is a Tier One Priority

You probably have many things that are important in your life. Write down all of your goals above and then check the three goals that are most important to you (this keeps the process manageable). Your tier one goals are the ones that will make the biggest impact in your life. They are not necessarily the goals that help you make the most money or make you famous, but rather the goals that add a deeper sense of fulfillment to your life. Tier One goals can be big or small. Perhaps you want to finish your degree, be debt-free, or change jobs by the end of this year. Whatever is meaningful to YOU is best to pursue.

6. Set a Target Date

This is a tough one, but it needs to be done. Just saying that you are going to write a book or lose weight is not really saying anything. Does that mean you are going to write a book in the next five years or lose weight sometime in your lifetime? If you just started working at a new company, it’s probably not realistic to say that you will be promoted tomorrow, but it might be reasonable to set a goal to be promoted within six months or the year. You will have to decide what’s possible given everything else going on in your life. Either way, it’s helpful to have a date that you are working toward. Please know that it’s OK to revise the target date as you move forward with your goal. The process is dynamic.

7. Take Small Steps

Slow and steady is a great strategy. Once you have a goal that speaks to you, break it down into small steps. If you want to start a business, perhaps the small step is registering a domain name or ordering business cards. Move away from extreme all-or-nothing strategies. Too many people think the goal setting process is over once you declare your goal; that’s when the fun starts. Train your mind to take one small step a day, and you will make amazing progress. It’s a process; it’s not magic.

TOP 1% BOTTOM LINE: One of the best ways to make a difference in your life and our society is to embrace the practice of clarifying your goals/intentions/vision. Goals serve as a road map or GPS to the next stop on your journey. And there will be many stops on your journey. You will find it most helpful to continue to fine-tune your process each year (think Kaizen = continuous improvement). Now is the time to Live in YOUR Top 1%.

I’d love for you to share the goals that speak to your heart and genuinely excite you in the comments section below.

Wishing you much “success” on your journey.

Believe in yourself,

Alissa

A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another. If the consumer (whether it’s a business, a buyer, a voter or a donor) doesn’t pay a premium, make a selection or spread the word, then no brand value exists for that consumer.
