BBA Discussion Forum / Why Major in Accounting?
« on: May 14, 2014, 04:21:51 PM »
Perhaps the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) summarized it best in its newly issued pamphlet: "Accounting: The One Degree with 360 Degrees of Possibilities": "You may already have an idea about what you want to do for a career. Then again, maybe you're not so sure. Either way, there's one degree that gives you the education to succeed at just about anything in the business world. It's an accounting degree. Accounting opens doors in every kind of business coast to coast. It can give you the foundation you need to go on and become a CPA. It can prepare you to become a partner in an accounting firm, to pursue a career in finance or corporate management, to work in government, or even to become an entrepreneur. In fact, no matter what you decide to do, having an accounting background can open doors wide."

The reason accounting may be the best route to a successful business career is because accounting has always been considered as the language and basic tool of business. It has always concerned itself with determining how a business is doing and what is the bottom line. But over the last two decades, the field of accounting has been changing dramatically in response to such explosive trends as the computer revolution, increased government regulations, frequent tax law changes, the globalization of business, and the on-going downsizing and restructuring of corporations. In this increasingly complex and competitive business environment, accounting skills are very much in demand and accounting has become a dynamic career. Accountants have shed their stodgy image of green eyeshade's and thick glasses to assume the more prestigious role of financial experts, system professionals, management consultants, budget analysts, etc.. The demand for accountants appears to be growing and outstripping supply. Job opportunities in today's business climate is better than ever for accountants.

These opportunities are particularly good for women. Women have generally done well in accounting. In the last decade and half, the number of women entering the accounting profession has almost doubled. In 1977, females made up 28 percent of all graduating accounting majors. Recently, according to an AICPA survey, there were more female accounting graduates than male (52 vs. 48 percent) and the gender breakdown of new accounting graduates hired by public accounting firms was 54 percent male and 46 percent female.

Business Administration / Ladies, learn how to get a perfect smile
« on: May 08, 2014, 03:45:57 PM »
Are you worried about the way your smile looks in a photograph or a selfie? Here are a few tips to ensure you get that picture-perfect grin:

- Relax your face and smile gently. Keep your mouth slightly opened, and align your lower lip so that it matches the curve of your upper teeth.

- Don't bend your head forward while smiling to avoid showing your double chin. Turn your head slightly and drop your chin so your face is not completely square with the camera.

- Lipstick shades like cherry red, wine, berry, plum, and rose pink make your teeth look whiter.

- Practice makes perfect, so stand in front of the mirror and get your posture and smile right. The ideal grin is one that shows the upper teeth and not too much of the gums.

- Run your tongue over your teeth just before the picture is taken. This moistens teeth and makes them sparkle.

Faculty Forum / Tired At Work? You're Not Alone
« on: May 08, 2014, 02:44:48 PM »
Are you at work right now and totally exhausted? You're probably not alone.

A new survey of 1,139 employees from three companies in the U.S. shows that 76 percent of workers feel tired many days of the week, and 15 percent even fall asleep during the day at least once per week.

The survey was conducted in November 2013 by Virgin Pulse and vielife. All of the study participants had completed a vielife sleep assessment.

Nearly one-third of people in the survey said they were unhappy or very unhappy with their sleep quality or quantity, the survey showed.

Room temperature was cited as the most common environmental disruptor to sleep, with 85.2 percent reporting this as a disruptor, followed by the participant's partner (71.9 percent), noise (68.6 percent) and too bright light (52.8 percent). Mattress issues were reported as a disruptor by 40 percent of people, and young children were reported as a disruptor by 35.9 percent. Medical issues were also reported as a disruptor by 10.2 percent.

Overall, the biggest things keeping people awake at night included worry and stress, physical discomfort, mental activity and environmental disruptors. With regard to worry and stress, they found that common worries included problems with family, deadlines at work, negative things that happened during the day, and being afraid of missing the next morning's alarm.

Other findings from the survey included the fact that nearly 55 percent of respondents said that they slept more during the weekend than during the week. In addition, waking at least once during the night was reported by 80 percent of the respondents (more than one-third of the respondents reported waking up at least twice a night).

Public Health / tips for healthy skin
« on: May 06, 2014, 11:41:55 AM »
Don't have time for intensive skin care? Pamper yourself with the basics. Good skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems. Get started with these five no-nonsense tips.

1. Protect yourself from the sun

One of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer.

For the most complete sun protection:

Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. When you're outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or perspiring.
Seek shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest.
Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with tightly woven long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also consider laundry additives, which give clothing an additional layer of ultraviolet protection for a certain number of washings, or special sun-protective clothing — which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

2. Don't smoke

Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. This depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients that are important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin — the fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. In addition, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking — such as pursing your lips when inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke — can contribute to wrinkles.

If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit. Ask your doctor for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking.

BBA Discussion Forum / Scientist Solves Mystery of Green Lightning
« on: May 06, 2014, 11:18:39 AM »
The origin of the bright green lightning bolts remained a mystery until atmospheric scientist Arthur Few, of Rice University in Houston, became curious about the phenomenon. "I thought, 'That's funny; why don't we see this in lightning storms?'" said Few at the meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in San Francisco on Monday.

Although green lightning seems unusual, Few now suspects it occurs during all thunderstorms but is concealed inside clouds.

Secret Origins

The concealment results from the structure of storm clouds. On the inside, the clouds contain ice crystals that are either positively or negatively charged. Surges of electricity occur between positively and negatively charged regions within the cloud—lightning—but they remain inside, unseen by even the most committed storm chasers.

In contrast, volcanic ash clouds carry their electrical charges on the outside, where they are sparked by fragments of rock forcefully ejected into the air during an eruption.

Few thinks that the bright green bolts seen at the Chaiten volcano are simply "positive streamers," or a current-transferring electrical surge from a positively to a negatively charged region on the outside of the cloud.

If only we could see inside thunderclouds, he suggests, we would see green lightning more often.

Green Color Explained

But why green? The green hue is given off by electrically excited oxygen atoms, says Few. He thinks the same process paints the sky green during the vivid light shows of the aurora borealis that can dominate northern skies in winter.

This phenomenon may have also colored the tail of Comet Lovejoy as it passed overhead in November.

For the time being, however, Chaiten in Chile is the only volcano where green lightning has been photographed.
