7.Balinghe River Bridge. Guanling, Guizhou, China.
Description: 1,214 feet high / 370 meters high
3,570 foot span / 1,088 meter span.2009

With a height of 1,214 feet (370 mtrs) from deck to water, the Balinghe River bridge is the second highest bridge in China and the 3rd highest road bridge in the world. Located near the town of Guanling about a third of the way along the 300 mile (483 km) Guiyang to Kunming Highway in China’s mountainous Guizhou Province, Balinghe is one of two super high suspension bridges along the 4-lane route.

Of the world’s 300 or so highest bridges, Balinghe is unique for having the 2nd longest span length with a distance between towers of 3,570 feet (1088 mtrs) - nearly as long as the Golden Gate bridge! The gap is so great the bridge appears to be floating among the clouds as it connects two mountain ranges. Balinghe is one of 4 high Chinese suspension bridges with extremely long spans. The other three being the Siduhe, Aizhai and Beipanjiang 2009 highway bridges. Prior to these spans, the longest bridge of any notable height was the New River Gorge bridge in West Virginia with an arch span of 1,700 feet (518 mtrs). In 2012 the world's longest span high level bridge record will go to China's Aizhai Bridge with a span of 3,858 feet (1,176 mtrs).

8.Millau Viaduct, Millau, Midi-Pyrénées, France
Description: 909 feet high / 277 meters high
1,122 foot span / 342 meter span,2004

No other high bridge in history caught the eye of the media more than the opening of the Millau Viaduct in 2004. Comprised of 8 consecutive cable stayed spans totaling 8,100 feet (2460 mtrs), the viaduct is the tallest bridge structure in the world with a pier and mast rising a lofty 1,100 feet (335 mtrs) above the ground. With a roadway 909 feet (277 mtrs) above the Tarn River, it is also the highest cable stayed bridge in the world, a record it will retain until 2012 when Mexico’s Baluarte bridge opens. Despite being the highest bridge in Europe, the massive structure ranks only 13th among all high bridges of the world. The bridge has rightfully been described as beautiful, breathtaking, spectacular and awe-inspiring.

Located near the southern end of France, the bridge was the last major connection on the A75 motorway, a 4-lane highway that has been under construction in one form or another since 1975. Several routes were proposed that would have put the Tarn River crossing either east or west of the small town of Millau.

5. Phil G McDonald Bridge,Glade Creek Bridge.. Beckley, West Virginia, United States

Description: 700 feet high / 213 meters high
784 foot span / 239 meter span,1988.

.

Of North America’s 10 highest bridges, the Phil G McDonald or Glade Creek bridge is probably the least known. Located several miles east of Beckley, West Virginia, U.S.A., this huge deck truss has one of the tallest piers ever built on an American bridge, rising 341 feet (104 mtrs) from the foundation to the underside of the truss. The shorter pier measures 293 feet (89 mtrs) tall.

Coincidentally, Glade Creek is a near twin of California’s Auburn-Foresthill bridge. From an engineering standpoint, the only major difference between the two is the West Virginia span is a continuous truss instead of a cantilever. The California span is only about 10 percent bigger in size and height. Much of Glade Creek’s status as a “hidden” high bridge is probably due to its being in the shadow of the world famous New River Gorge bridge located just 20 miles (32 km) to the north. Even so, at 700 feet (213 mtrs), Glade Creek is exactly 80 percent as high as the New River span. And although it does not have the same prestige as “The World’s Highest Arch Bridge”, Glade Creek still holds a record of its own as the “World’s Highest Truss Bridge”.

The thick foliage surrounding the structure make it a difficult bridge to photograph. A graded dirt road on the west side of the bridge leads down into the ravine where you can hike along the creek and look up at the deck, 70 stories above.

6. Kochertal Viaduct.. Braunsbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Description: 607 feet high / 185 meters high
453 foot span / 138 meter span,1979

he highest bridge ever built in Germany, the massive Kochertal Viaduct was the tallest viaduct in the world for 25 years until 2004 when France’s Millau Viaduct finally surpassed it. China also opened two taller viaducts in 2008 and 2009 in the form of the Mashuihe and Longtanhe bridges on the last section of the West Hurong highway between Shanghai and Chengdu. Although there is no absolute definition of what constitutes a viaduct, such bridges usually cross wide valleys with several spans of equal length instead of one large central span. Kochertal’s tallest pier is tied with Longtanhe as the 5th highest in the world measuring 584 feet (178 mtrs). Only the Millau Viaduct and Mexico’s El Carrizo and San Marcos bridges and China's Labajin have taller piers.

Opened in 1979, the Kochertal carries Germany’s A6 motorway 607 feet (185 meters) above the broad Kocher River valley. Constructed outward from both sides of the valley using formworks, the massive 21 foot (6.5 meter) deep single cell box girder was launched first before inclined struts were placed at 25 foot (7.66 meter) intervals from the bottom edge, allowing the wider wings of the road deck to cantilever out to the side from the central box beam. The total width of the massive deck is 102 feet (31 meters). The clean lines of the bridge come from architect Hans Kammerer as well as the engineers at Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner and Dycherhoff & Widmann.

3. New River Gorge Bridge.. Fayetteville, West Virginia, United States

Description: 876 feet high / 267 meters high
1,700 foot span / 518 meter span, 1977

A monumental steel arch built on a grand scale not often seen in bridge construction, the New River Gorge bridge in the U.S. state of West Virginia opened in 1977 as the highest and longest arch bridge in the world with a height of 876 feet (267 mtrs) and a main span of 1,700 feet (518 mtrs). Several Chinese bridges eroded these records away, first in 2001 when the Beipanjiang railway arch bridge opened with a greater height of 902 feet (275 mtrs) and then in 2003 when the Lupu arch bridge opened in Shanghai with a longer main span of 1,804 feet (550 mtrs). Then in 2009, China finally opened an even higher 4-lane road arch in the form of the Zhijinghe bridge with a deck 965 feet (294 mtrs) above the water - 90 feet (27 mtrs) higher then the West Virginia span.

Built at a cost of 37 million dollars, the bridge was designed by the large engineering firm of Michael Baker, Jr. and constructed by the legendary American Bridge Company. The massive span itself was built by using a highline with two 330 foot (101 mtr) tall towers some 3,500 feet (1,067 mtrs) apart.

4. Italia Viaduct.. Laino Borgo, Calabria, Italy
Description: 850 feet high / 259 meters high
575 foot span / 175 meter span,1974

The highest bridge in Italy, the Italia viaduct was the second highest bridge in the world upon its opening in 1974. It is still the highest steel beam bridge in the world and was the highest bridge in Europe for 30 years until France’s Millau Viaduct surpassed it in 2004. Only China’s concrete Liuguanghe is higher among all beam bridges. The viaduct is the highest among several impressive bridges along Italy’s spectacular Autostrada Napoli-Reggio Calabria or A3 motorway including the biggest and highest frame bridge in the world over Sfalassa gorge.

Soaring 850 feet (259 mtrs) above a deep cut over the Lao river, the Italia Viaduct lives up to its name with a very Italian-style steel box beam design. The central portion of the bridge consists of a continuous single beam of 1,394 feet (425 mtrs) spread over 3 spans including a central river span of 575 feet (175 mtrs). The 472 foot (144 meter) tall pier is Italy’s fourth highest. The Gorsexio and Sente bridges have higher piers of 541 feet (165 meters) as well as the Rago Viaduct at 482 feet (147 meters).
