Level-4,Term-1
Project name: Integration_of_riverfront_with_new_city:Taking advantage of Shifted Dhaka Central Jail

The Dhaka Central Jail has been shifted to Keraniganj, leaving behind a vast open space of historic importance. For the People of old dhaka this shift offered a vast scope of developing designed open space and necessary public facilities. Using this scope, there is also a potential of connecting the riverfront of Buriganga with the New city. This integration can be done in many ways. In the conjested situation of Old dhaka, development model of some other cities will not work. Academy should come forward to propose some creative solution. The project is given to Level 4 Term 1 students as a challenge to design their city connecting past to move for future. The first phase was survey presentation. From GIS map and field survey students gathered information on three headlines: Landuse , Traffic and transport analysis, Open space and amenities. This survey was done extensively by systematic observation, interview and data analysis. They will study successful urban design and then propose design solution for the project. Detail and innovative solution for designing in the Historic yet organic context of Old dhaka is an important point to be considered.

Departments / Being Local?
« on: August 22, 2017, 04:29:19 PM »
A person asked to Bibi Russel 'I have a dream working with handloom, jamdani, local clothing etc, but how shall I convince my friends to wear our local clothing?it seems they don't like it'.
Her answer was 'what are you wearing! As a student you need to work and make frequent move, you can wear jeans and fotua/shirt, look! What you have dressed!A gown, that is a party dress and not at all local'
So question yourself first.

Departments / Tourism in cox'sbazar
« on: July 10, 2017, 01:45:16 PM »
Bangladesh has unique character to be developed as a tourist country. The country with its numerous rivers, largest sea beach in the world, largest mangrove forest in the world, many ancient structures, hills and mountains, vibrant city life etc. attracts tourist all over the world. Government is also trying to facilitate tourism more. rooms, dining area, kitchen. Swimming pool and other required facilities needs to be ensured. The sea view is always a challenging feature in design. Privacy and security needs to be maintained.

The year 2016 has been declared as the year of tourism with  view to attract tourist more. The mostly visited tourist destination is Cox's bazaar. It has sea, mountains, tribal villages, natural falls, ancient religious structures etc which attract tourist all the year round. Many hotels have been built and more are on the way. In peak season it is difficult to find rooms due to insufficient facilities. Govt. has already acquired land for tourist zone- Sabrang at Inani. Internationalization of the airport and connecting railway is also under construction.
Cox's Bazaar has climatic features that affects the design of hotel. The tidal surge, wind speed, dust from the beach etc. influence the design.
For tourism, standard facilities and services is the most priority.

Why restricting any function in a box, neglecting the essence of the function. Can a function itself inspire architects to design in a different way. Students of 3-1 worked on this. See their work

Faculty Forum / Daffodil Tower 3rd floor design perspective
« on: April 03, 2017, 05:05:43 PM »
The design is done in a very minimal yet sober approach for an academic institution. I have attached image of ceiling sample for better understanding. The wall surface will be used for branding and departmental notice board purpose.Yellow acrylic baord used in some vertical wall as a contrast to the overall white atmosphere of the space. The raised platform will be covered with grass like carpet that has already been used in lower floor admission office

Faculty Forum / DAFFODIL TOWER LOBBY DESIGN
« on: April 03, 2017, 05:02:22 PM »
Three students and me worked in this project, it was a nice experience.
Design Idea: The ground floor is kept maximum open space so that anytime it can be used as exhibition space. Only seating with a vertical surface near escalator is provided. The students surveyed the floors extensively and found out very poorly lighted space in the floors. So they have provided an exciting as well as well lit interior solution. The design initiated from hexagonal pattern that can have triangle shape too. This pattern manipulated in a different way to create ceiling and vertical surface. The first floor indoor games area need a screen in the atrium side as Table tennis ball frequently falls in the atrium lobby. This screen will also be used a branding wall. The other floors are also designed in a minimal but functional way. The triangle become container of paper/magazine in the wall surface where necessary

Faculty Forum / Social unrest
« on: April 25, 2016, 10:02:52 AM »
Recent horrible incidents of child abuse or child killing make every morning very sad and every night very traumatic. Parents who have child, can't sleep well and working women are always in a worry, is her child is ok! I have talked to several parents (around 20) who find themselves very helpless and have restricted their children's movement. They don't allow their children to go any place with their friend as the outside is full of human like beast. This social unrest affects the way we expect our children to be nurtured.
So we observe very little amount of children's in park, field and lake. It's obvious they have little facility for them in these urban open spaces but its also because this places are overcrowded with teenagers and adults. Huge traffic flow in cities are also a threat to children's free movement. So in designing cities, children's space need to be carefully designed.

Faculty Forum / Way to look at students
« on: April 25, 2016, 09:50:02 AM »
Being a teacher I feel myself very responsible person. This responsibility in a brief is towards any student and in a broader sense towards the society. When I look at students eye, I see the thirst for learning but it depends on me whether I make it very easy and understandable to them. As they will be in profession, so I always relate the subject topics with professional experience. Hence I need to work in a part-time job, not only for gaining experience for myself but also for the students. This two thing- academic quality enhancement and professional involvement thus create huge pressure for me, to make a lecture. So in lecture plan I always focus on their engagement. When they are engaged in any assignment or presentation, they learn something. I also prefer group study. I frequently take them to site visit ( as my class size is small), I share different projects to them. So I prepare myself to be a teacher, who focus on students capability and at the same time their quality enhancement. Sometimes I don't complete my lecture plan fully, as I find there is a lack in students understanding. How can I move forward to lecture-2 if there is a problem in lecture-1. So teaching is all about understanding your students, in my opinion. So I feel when we look at students, how much I shall expect depends on how much I shall give time also.

Departments / Royal Gold Medal for Zaha Hadid was "totally overdue''
« on: April 10, 2016, 11:40:37 AM »
The Royal Institute of British Architects has acted "to right a 180-year wrong" by giving its highest honour to a woman, the body's president has said.

Jane Duncan made the remark in a speech at a ceremony at RIBA headquarters in London last night, where architect Zaha Hadid became the first woman ever to win the RIBA Royal Gold Medal in her own right.

"Speaking as only the third woman president of the RIBA I find it amazing that it has taken until 2016 to elect the first female Royal Gold Medallist," Duncan told guests at a dinner in honour of Hadid.

"To right a 180-year wrong we elected a woman whom I have admired since my student days, visiting the AA [the architecture school where Hadid studied and taught] from the Bartlett up the road."

On April 07, 2016 the students of Department of Architecture, Daffodil International University visited the LEED Platinum pre-certified green building ‘Simple tree Anarkali’ at Gulshan Avenue designed by renowned architect Muhammad Fayez Ullah, MD, Volume Zero architects.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is basically a third-party certification program. It is a nationally accepted organization for design, operation and construction of high performance green buildings. Designing Green commercial office building is the recent trend in Bangladesh. In academy it is also expected that students will incorporate green design issues in their projects.
Ar. Mukimul Islam from Volume Zero architects described the design aspects to the students. Students asked different questions and visited the whole compound.
