ICT / Star Wars: The High Republic is Disney's new Star Wars saga

In December The Rise of Skywalker ended the Star Wars sequel trilogy. But fear not, Jedis and Sith Lords, Disney and Lucasfilm have plenty of Star Wars in the pipeline for you. On Monday the two companies unveiled Star Wars: The High Republic, formerly known as Project Luminous, which combines novels, children's books and comics to tell one interconnected story.

The High Republic saga is set 200 years before The Phantom Menace, the first prequel film. That puts it at about 260 years before the original Star Wars flick. At this stage in the Star Wars universe, the Jedi Order still has the Galactic Empire very much under control. No Machiavellian, secretly Sith politicians around here, no sir.

According to Michael Siglain, director of Lucasfilm Publishing, this quote from Obi-Wan Kenobi is the inspiration for the new saga: "For over a thousand generations the Jedi knights were the guardians of peace and justice."

"[It's] a line that we've been hearing since 1977, and we thought, 'what does that look like?'" Siglain explains in a teaser trailer for The High Republic. The teaser also features creators on how they envisage the Jedi of this era as "the Jedi Knights of the Round Table" -- which is to say the Jedi Order is at the peak of its heroism and badassery.


But of course, calamity will strike and heroes will be tested. The threat emerges from the Nihil, imagined as "space vikings" who live on the fringe of the Galactic Empire, according to the creators. The Jedi won't be the only stars, though, as new smugglers, scoundrels and bounty hunters will also see time in the spotlight.

Phase one of The High Republic debuts in August at the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim convention, and will feature five releases: young adult novel Into the Dark, middle grade novel A Test of Courage, comic book series The High Republic Adventures, another comic book series (this one from Marvel) called simply The High Republic, and finally a novel called The Light of the Jedi.

Nasa has been able to confirm that Mars is seismically active after its Insight spacecraft was able to detect two quakes large enough to be tracked back to their source.

First landing in November 2018 in the Elysium Planitia region, Insight (pictured above) detected over 100 “Marsquakes” in its first year on the planet. However, there was some debate amongst scientists as to whether the vibrations detected were legitimate seismic activity or just Martian wind rattling its instruments.

Dr Bruce Barnerdt, InSight principal investigator and lead author on one of the studies, said: “We finally have, for the first time, established that Mars is a seismically active planet.”

The first so-called “Marsquake” was recorded by InSight’s onboard sensors in April 2019. Since then, it has detected more than 450 quivers, much smaller than anything that would be felt on Earth.

Two of the quakes were found to emanate from a geologically active area known as Cerberus Fossae, around 1,000 miles east of Elysium Planitia.

The finding is significant as the quakes are thought to be created by the cooling and subsequent shrinking of the planet, alongside general tectonic plate shifting like we have on Earth.

The Martian seismic activity recorded by the lander’s seismometer - a ground-motion detection sensor - was found to be greater than that of the Moon, but less than that of Earth.


“As the planet cools, it contracts and then the brittle outer layers have to fracture in order to sort of maintain themselves on the surface. That’s kind of the long-term source of stresses,” said planetary geophysicist and mission principal investigator Bruce Banerdt.

The team believes that understanding more about the seismic activity of planets other than Earth could reveal clues about how the Solar System formed.

Dr Domenico Giardini, of ETH Zurich in Switzerland and lead author on one of the studies, added: “Marsquakes have characteristics already observed on the Moon during the Apollo era, with a long signal duration (10 to 20 minutes) due to the scattering properties of the Martian crust.”

The researchers devised a magnitude scale tailored to Mars, but similar to the one used for earthquakes. The strongest of the quakes were a little less than magnitude 4, meaning they would be felt on the surface perhaps dozens of miles from the epicenter but probably would not do much damage.

Evidence of dust devils, which are whirls of Martian soil whipped up by the wind that spin like a tornado at nearly 60mph, were observed a month after InSight touched down on Mars.

The £633 million Nasa mission is expected to continue for another year.

In June, Nasa’s Curiosity rover discovered the largest amount of methane measured during its near seven-year mission, a potential sign of life after recent doubts about how much methane the planet really produces.

The attorney general of the US state of New Mexico is suing Google, accusing the company of illegally collecting the personal data of school children.

The tech giant is alleged to have collected data on which websites pupils visited, passwords, videos watched, contact lists, and other information.

The data was allegedly gathered from Google's Chromebook laptops and G Suite for Education programme.

Google disputes the claim, with a spokesman calling it "factually wrong".

Google Chromebooks and the G Suite for Education - which includes Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs and others - are offered for free to more than 60% of students in New Mexico, according to the lawsuit.

Attorney General Hector Balderas said Google had failed to get parental consent from children under 13 and collected their data for commercial purposes, in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

"Student safety should be the number one priority of any company providing services to our children, particularly in schools," Mr Balderas said in a statement. "Tracking student data without parental consent is not only illegal, it is dangerous."

"Google should be telling parents that they're going to stalk and track these children, and under the guise of education," he added, according to KRQU News in Albuquerque.

The lawsuit says that more than 80m teachers and students in the US use Google's education platform and tools.

Jose Castaneda, a spokesman for Google, said their programme "allows schools to control account access and requires that schools obtain parental consent when necessary".

"We do not use personal information from users in primary and secondary schools to target ads," his statement added.

The attorney general told US media that he had contacted school districts across the state to assure them that there was no imminent threat in continuing to use Google products.

Last year Google reached a $170m (£130m) settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over allegations that it illegally harvested personal data from children on YouTube.

 In a world-first, scientists have discovered a new type of antibiotic using artificial intelligence (AI).

It has been heralded by experts as a major breakthrough in the fight against the growing problem of drug resistance.

A powerful algorithm was used to analyze more than one hundred million chemical compounds in a matter of days.

The newly discovered compound was able to kill 35 types of potentially deadly bacteria, said researchers.

Antibiotic-resistant infections have risen in recent years - up 9% in England between 2017 and 2018, to nearly 61,000.

If antibiotics are taken inappropriately, harmful bacteria living inside the body can become resistant to them, which means the medicines may not work when really needed.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called the phenomenon "one of the biggest threats to global health security and development today".
'A new age'

"In terms of antibiotic discovery, this is absolutely a first," said Regina Barzilay, a senior researcher on the project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The discovery was made using an algorithm inspired by the architecture of the human brain.

Scientists trained it to analyze the structure of 2,500 drugs and other compounds to find those with the most anti-bacterial qualities that could kill E. coli.

They then selected around 100 candidates for physical testing before discovering salicin.

"I think this is one of the more powerful antibiotics that has been discovered to date," said James Collins, a bioengineer on the team at MIT.

"We wanted to develop a platform that would allow us to harness the power of artificial intelligence to usher in a new age of antibiotic drug discovery."

Dr Peter Bannister, chairman of the Institution of Engineering and Technology healthcare panel, said the method used was already "well established" within medical research.

"The same approach has gained popularity in the development of new therapeutics, such as pharmaceuticals and, in the case of this research, antibiotics where pattern recognition including deep learning can help sort through the vast numbers of molecules," he told the BBC.

"This paper goes beyond theoretical simulation and presents preclinical results, which are essential along with subsequent clinical trials to clearly demonstrate the efficacy and safety of these new 'AI discovered' drugs."

Since 2014, the UK has cut the number of antibiotics it uses by more than 7%, but the number of drug-resistant bloodstream infections increased by 35% from 2013 to 2017.

Researchers added that the use of the machine to accelerate drug discovery could help bring down the cost of generating more antibiotics in the future.
Major breakthroughs

It comes just weeks after a drug molecule discovered by AI was set to become the first of its kind to be used in human trials.

It will be used to treat patients who have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

The use of AI technology within healthcare remains in its infancy, but major breakthroughs continue to be made.

A study recently claimed that AI is more accurate than doctors in diagnosing breast cancer from mammograms.

An international team, including researchers from Google Health and Imperial College London, designed and trained a computer model on X-ray images from nearly 29,000 women.

The algorithm outperformed six radiologists in reading mammograms.

Get ready for the first complete synthetic human brain, moon mining, and much more. Maybe robotic moon bases, chips implanted in our brains, self-driving cars and high-speed rail linking London to Beijing. According to a dazzling number of technology predictions that single out the year 2020, it's going to be to be one heck of a year. Here, we take a look at some of the wonders it has in store.

2020, of course, is just a convenient target date for roughly-10-years-off predictions. "It's not any more particularly interesting, in my opinion, than 2019 or 2021," says Mike Liebhold, a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute for the Future, and an all-around technology expert with a resume that includes stints with Intel, Apple, and even Netscape.

Liebhold now helps clients take a long view of their businesses so they can make better decisions in the short term. He and his colleagues at the Institute for the Future don't help clients read tea leaves but they do help them read what he calls the signals — those things you can see in the world today that allow you to make reasonable forecasts about what the future holds.

In other words, the year 2020 (and 2019, and 2021) is Liebhold's business. And he forecasts a pretty interesting world a decade from now. So what will the world look like in 2020? With Liebhold riding shotgun, we took a quick spin through 2020 to see what the future might hold.

Japan will build a robotic moon base

There’s no technological reason why Japan shouldn't be able to move forward with its ambitious plan to build a robotic lunar outpost by 2020 — built by robots, for robots. In fact, there’s really no nation better for the job in terms of technological prowess.

The Institute for the Future’s Mike Liebhold says, “There are private launch vehicles that are probably capable of doing that, and I think the robotics by that point are going to be quite robust.”

China will connect Beijing to London via high-speed rail

China’s plan:Link the East and West with a high-speed rail line. Not linking the Eastern with the Western parts of China — they're talking about linking the Eastern world with the Western world.

How to deal with the inevitable headaches of a 17-country train? Offer to pick up the tab. China would pay for and build the infrastructure in exchange for the rights to natural resources such as minerals, timber and oil from the nations that would benefit from being linked in to the trans-Asian/European corridor.

Cars will drive themselves

It's long been a dream of, well, just about everyone, from Google and DARPA to automakers themselves: utter safety and ease of transport thanks to self-driving cars. There's movement being made, but the first hurdle to clear is a big one: Getting all these heterogenous cars to speak to one another. We don't yet have the wireless infrastructure, globally speaking, to link all our cars with all our traffic tech.

Biofuels will be cost-competitive with fossil fuels

The U.S. military has pledged to get half its energy from renewable resources by 2020, and the Navy whole-heartedly believes it can turn to 50 percent biofuels by then. It makes political sense not to rely on volatile regions for energy, and this push could mean both cleaner vehicle fleets and a major bump in the competitiveness of biofuels in the market.

The 'flying car' will be airborne

The rebirth of the flying car? Liebhold, of the Institute for the Future, shoots this one down. "No. The air traffic control for something like that is incredible." It's a problem in every way — logistically we can't do it, cost-wise we can't do it, and technologically it's extremely unlikely. Oh well.

PopSci Predicts: The military might have its prototype “flying humvee” by 2020 (DARPA wants it by 2015), but the tech won’t trickle down to the rest of us for quite a while.

We'll control devices via microchips implanted in our brains

The human brain remains biology’s great, unconquered wilderness, and while the idea of meshing the raw power of the human mind with electronic stimulus and responsiveness has long existed in both science fiction and — to some degree — in reality, we likely won’t be controlling our devices with a thought in 2020 as Intel has predicted. While it’s currently possible to implant a chip in the brain and even get one to respond to or stimulate gross neural activity, we simply don’t understand the brain’s nuance well enough to create the kind of interface that would let you channel surf by simply thinking about it.

“Neural communications are both chemical and electrical,” Liebhold says. “And we have no idea about how that works, particularly in the semantics of neural communication. So yeah, somebody might be able to put electronics inside somebody’s cranium, but I personally believe it’s only going to be nominally useful for very, very narrow therapeutic applications.”

PopSci Predicts: We might have chips in the brain by 2020, but they won’t be doing much.

All new screens will be ultra-thin OLEDs

Display tech moves incredibly fast. There will certainly still be some “antique” LCD monitor screens hanging around in 2020, but as far as new stock is concerned, it’s easy to see the entire industry shifting to paper-thin OLED surfaces, many with touch capability.

“So surfaces will become computational," Liebhold says. "walls, mirrors, windows. I think that's legitimate.”

PopSci Predicts: “Give that one a high probability,” Liebhold says. Done.

Commercial space will take us to the moon and asteroids (and we'll be mining them)

A two-parter: commercial trips to the moon (which is becoming a bustling space industry as you read this) and mining extraterrestrial bodies. That last part seems less likely — we haven't yet figured out what long-term space travel would do to the human body, and even robotic missions are likely several decades off.

PopSci Predicts: Commercial space travel is the real deal, but beyond orbital flights things become exponentially more difficult. The moon, asteroids and mining missions are unlikely targets within the 2020 time frame.

Cisco’s chief futurist made this prediction a couple of years ago, and it seems reasonable in some ways. Not intelligence, really, but purely the "ability, the number of cycles," as Liebhold puts it, is on track given Moore's Law.

Universal translation will be commonplace in mobile devices

This one's under intense development, both in practical forms like Google Translate and crazier ones from DARPA.  Translation will probably happen in the cloud, consulting with massive bodies of language knowledge compiled by companies and governments.

We'll finally see some decent AR glasses

Augmented reality is highly visible on smartphone apps, but we want more — we want rich, customizable, relevant and easy to access AR overlaid directly onto whatever we happen to be looking at. That depends on the glasses and GPS, which should be accurate enough to keep up with the real world by 2020, but also on the spatial web, with geolocation data.

We'll create a synthetic brain that functions like the real deal

Once we have a computer with the processing power of a brain, can we build a brain from scratch? Researchers at Switzerland's Blue Brain Project think so. But there's an argument that as we build a brain, we'll learn more and more about it, increasing the rate of difficulty as we proceed.

যাঁদের ধুলাবালু, ফুলের রেণু ইত্যাদিতে অ্যালার্জি আছে, তাঁরা মাস্ক ব্যবহার করতে পারেন। অ্যালার্জি কমবে। যাঁরা সর্দি–কাশি, ইনফ্লুয়েঞ্জা, সার্স, করোনাভাইরাসজনিত অসুখ, যক্ষ্মা, ডিফথেরিয়া ইত্যাদির রোগী, তাঁরা মাস্ক ব্যবহার করবেন। এর ফলে তাঁদের হাঁচি–কাশির মাধ্যমে রোগজীবাণু বাতাসে ছড়ানোর সুযোগ পাবে না। তাতে আশপাশের লোকজন থাকবেন নিরাপদ। কোনো এলাকায় সর্দিকাশি, ইনফ্লুয়েঞ্জা ইত্যাদি রোগের প্রাদুর্ভাব বেশি হলে রোগীদের আশপাশে থাকা সুস্থ লোকজনও মাস্ক ব্যবহার করবেন, যেন নিশ্বাসের সঙ্গে বাতাসে ছড়িয়ে থাকা রোগজীবাণু শ্বাসনালিতে প্রবেশ করতে না পারে।

কোন মাস্ক ভালো

বাজারে বিভিন্ন ধরনের মাস্ক পাওয়া যায়। দুই কানের সঙ্গে আটকে রাখার জন্য ফিতা বা ইলাস্টিক ব্যান্ডযুক্ত সার্জিক্যাল মাস্ক ও রেসপিরেটর মাস্ক। সার্জিক্যাল মাস্কগুলো সাধারণত চ্যাপ্টা, চারকোনাকার। আর রেসপিরেটর মাস্কগুলো তিন কোনার, সামনের দিকটি নাকে ফিট হওয়ার জন্য একটু উঁচু। সার্জিক্যাল মাস্কের চেয়ে রেসপিরেটর মাস্ক ভালো। এগুলো নাকে–মুখে ফিট হয় বেশ। মাস্ক আর মুখের ত্বকের মাঝখানে ফাঁক থাকে না। সার্জিক্যাল মাস্কগুলো দ্বারা প্রায় ৮০ শতাংশ রোগজীবাণু ফিল্টার হয়। কিন্তু রেসপিরেটর মাস্কগুলো রোগজীবাণু ফিল্টার করতে পারে প্রায় ৯৫ শতাংশ। তবে শিশুদের মুখ ছোট বিধায় রেসপিরেটর মাস্ক তাদের জন্য উপযোগী নয়। একবার ব্যবহার উপযোগী মাস্কই বেশি ভালো। এক পরতের মাস্কের চেয়ে কয়েক পরতের মাস্ক ব্যবহার করাই শ্রেয়। একাধিক পরত অতি ক্ষুদ্র কণার প্রবেশও রোধ করতে পারে। একবার ব্যবহার উপযোগী সার্জিক্যাল মাস্কে তিনটি পরত থাকে। বেশি মোটার কারণে শ্বাস টানায় বা ছাড়ায় বেশি সমস্যা যেন না হয়, মাস্ক বাছাইয়ের সময় সে খেয়াল রাখতে হবে। মাস্কটা মুখে ফিট হতে হবে ভালোভাবে। মাস্ক আর নাক-মুখের ফাঁক দিয়ে যেন ধুলাবালু ঢুকতে না পারে।

মাস্ক ব্যবহারে সতর্কতা

মাস্ক হওয়া চাই পরিষ্কার–পরিচ্ছন্ন। নাক–মুখ ঢেকেই মাস্ক পরতে হবে। মাস্কের বাইরের দিকটা প্রতিবার ব্যবহারের সময় যেন বাইরের দিকেই থাকে, সে খেয়াল রাখতে হবে অবশ্যই। নইলে শ্বাস টানার সময় মাস্কের বাইরের দিকে লেগে থাকা ক্ষুদ্র কণা ও রোগজীবাণু শ্বাসনালিতে ঢুকে যাবে। একজনের মাস্ক আরেকজন ব্যবহার করা যাবে না। ভেজা মাস্ক ব্যবহার করা যাবে না। মাস্ক খুলতে হবে ফিতা বা ইলাস্টিক ধরে। ব্যবহার করা মাস্ক ফেলতে হবে নিরাপদ স্থানে।

রোগের বিস্তার বা প্রতিরোধের জন্য মাস্ক অবশ্যই শতভাগ কার্যকর নয়। সম্প্রতি করোনা বা কোভিড–১৯–এর প্রাদুর্ভাবের কারণে বিশ্বজুড়ে মাস্ক ব্যবহারের প্রবণতা বেড়েছে। করোনাভাইরাস রেসপিরেটরি ড্রপলেট বা শ্বাসের মাধ্যমে ছড়ায়। আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির হাঁচি–কাশি বা থুতুর মাধ্যমে অন্যরা আক্রান্ত হতে পারেন। এই ভাইরাসের ইনকিউবেশন পিরিয়ড ১৪ দিন। মানে আক্রান্ত হওয়ার পর ১৪ দিন পর্যন্ত আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির কাছ থেকে দূরে থাকতে হবে। আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির উচিত মুখে মাস্ক পরে থাকা ও লোকসমাগম থেকে দূরে থাকা। পরিচর্যাকারীও মাস্ক ব্যবহার করবেন ও প্রতিবার আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির কাছে যাওয়ার পর পোশাক ও মাস্ক পাল্টাবেন, হাত ভালো করে ধুয়ে নেবেন। আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তির ব্যবহার্য বস্তু না ধরাই ভালো। তবে মাস্ক ব্যবহার করলেই যে শতভাগ নিরাপদ থাকা যাবে, তা নয়।

 তবে সঠিকভাবে মাস্ক ব্যবহার করলে রোগীর হাঁচি–কাশির মাধ্যমে রোগজীবাণু বাইরে বাতাসে ছড়াবে অনেক কম। কোনো এলাকায় সর্দি–কাশি, ইনফ্লুয়েঞ্জা ইত্যাদি রোগের প্রাদুর্ভাব বেশি হলে সুস্থ মানুষও থাকতে পারবেন অপেক্ষাকৃত নিরাপদ। মাস্ক ব্যবহারের পাশাপাশি অন্যান্য প্রতিরোধমূলক ব্যবস্থা, যেমন নিয়মিত হাত ধোয়া, অপরিষ্কার হাতে নাক–মুখ–চোখ স্পর্শ না করার মতো স্বাস্থ্যকর অভ্যাস চর্চা করে যেতে হবে সব সময়।
