Tolerance and Democracy

Tolerance in accepting other's opinion is the first prerequisite in establishing democracy in the social structure. The acceptance of opposite views can introduce new way of thinking. whenever we meet others all of them are not in the same opinion, that's quite normal. We must not have the notion that those people will think as mine. The great scholar Karl Marx has emphasized on the acceptance of opposite way of thinking, as we can not evaluate the importance of light without darkness, we wouldn't be able to test a thesis without anti-thesis. Karl Marx has said that, every thesis has anti-thesis and the interaction of both makes synthesis. Every synthesis is a new thesis. So we see that the combination of things and it's opposition can create something new.

Now, the issue tolerance is the main factor in democracy. Because democracy tends to establish equal opportunity for all to ensure their rights. without tolerance that can not be ensured. Whenever a person can not tolerate none opinion but his, there is very low chance to establish equality and thus democracy. For example we use the name of modern democratic countries like UK, USA, Switzerland etc. But do we have a look in their social structure? Those people are so tolerant. We have received only the bad things from the west keeping the good things behind. For better realization, we can talk about the political structure of India as we have a better idea than the western. The institutionalization of democracy has been mobilized just after the independence in 1947. But Pakistan couldn't do that anyway.

The lack of tolerance facilitates the intrusion of military in the political system, though democracy never allow military in governance system. It’s become clear whenever we compare the political system of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, our beloved homeland. Indian political system has never been interrupted by military rule where both Pakistan and Bangladesh have experienced military rule for several times. Have we found the cause behind this?

We are talking about tolerance in establishing democracy. In every sphere of democratic political system tolerance must be needed. Political parties must tolerate the ideology of other parties; party in power must tolerate the criticism from outside the government and party in opposition must use the conscience in criticizing the activities of the ruling party. Public can be separated in groups in adopting ideology but they must not be violent in establishing a single ideology, in this case the situation can be vice versa.

Democracy in transitional societies have been facing troublesome because of lacking of tolerance. There are other problems but a majority portion of problems can be solved with introducing the sense of tolerance among the people of the society.
