Common Forum/Request/Suggestions / 20 Health Tips for Ramadan

20 practical health tips for Ramaḍān

1. Begin iftār with dates, providing you with an immediate source of energy. Rehydrate yourself with plenty water.
2. Isotonic drinks or natural juice drinks when breaking the fast are a good source of minerals, salts, and vitamins.
3. Resist the urge to feast as much as you can, as quickly as you can! Research has shown that even food-associated words appear much brighter to the hungry.[9] After a day of fasting and discipline, resist this instinct and illusion – aim to eat in moderation.
4. Avoid high-fat, high-sugar content, and highly-processed food (e.g. white wheat) – fried food, ghee, pakoras, biryanis, Indian sweets, halawas (and the list goes on..!). By iftār time, our bodies are working to preserve as much energy possible. Therefore, excessive fatty food and sugars will be rapidly added to body fat reserves.
5. Salty food at iftār and suhūr will cause dehydration and make you feel increasingly thirsty.
6. After Maghrib salāh, have a well-balanced meal containing all of the food groups mentioned in this article.
7. Meals with slow release carbohydrates will keep you well energised for a night of ʿibādah. Include sources of fibre, which will keep your bowels working and healthy after resting during the day.
8. Fibre and proteins keep you feeling full for longer – an important part of your meal plan.
9. Staying well hydrated and eating sources of fibre will help prevent constipation in Ramaḍān
Cereals, salads, fruit and vegetables are excellent replacements for oily curries and fried snacks.
10. Eat in moderation, a heavy stomach rarely agrees with a night of fruitful ʿibādah
11.The ḥadīth regarding the breath of the fasting person does not justify poor dental hygiene. Brushing, flossing before tarawīḥ is advised, for the sake of fellow worshippers too! Excessive sugary snacks and drinks are also harmful for teeth.
12. After iftār, stay well hydrated by taking regular sips of water every half hour, or a cup full or more every hour.
13. Physical exercise immediately after iftār may not be a good idea, as our blood flow is being directed to our digestive system at that time.
14. Please be mindful of the sugar content in caffeinated energy drinks. With tea and coffee, again moderation is key.
15. Take the strength and discipline developed during fasting to give up smoking this Ramaḍān. Smoking cessation services in the NHS can help you reach this goal.[10]
16. Do not skip suhūr An important sunnah and opportunity to nourish your body with a balanced diet containing complex carbohydrates, fibres, proteins, good fats we have discussed earlier.
17. Try to fit in adequate time for napping. Planning rest well will allow us to make the most of our time in Ramaḍān. Even sleep can be rewarded if intended to recuperate in preparation for more ʿibādah!
18. If you are taking any regular medication, have any health conditions, are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is very important to consult with your GP first before planning your fasts. Please make sure you encourage family members to do the same.
19. Our Deen excuses those who are unwell or ill from fasting. Please spend time learning the fiqh of fasting from a trusted local imām, and ask when faced with any questions.
20. We ask Allāh Jalla wa ‘Alā to accept our fasting and grant us the ability to maximise our time in Ramaḍān.

3 PhD Scholarships in Civil Composites at University of Southern Queensland

Research Centre:

The Centre for Future Materials (CFM) at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is recognised nationally and internationally as a Centre of excellence in advanced materials and manufacturing. CFM delivers world class research in the design and development of innovative materials for diverse engineering applications. With a strong focus on polymer and concrete composites, CFM drives the development of low cost, sustainable, automated production technologies, servicing the aerospace, automotive, marine, wind energy, defence and civil sectors. The Civil Composites group at CFM works on leading edge research and development projects necessary to advance the use of fibre reinforced polymer composites in civil engineering and construction. In collaboration with various industries and asset owners, this group develop and apply novel composite technologies in new construction and repair of bridges, roads, railways, and marine to future-proof Australian infrastructure.

Job tasks and responsibilities

CFM is looking for high quality 3 PhD students who will be involved in the following research projects:

1. The successful candidate will be working as part of the newly funded $3 Million CRC-P project to develop polymer composite railway sleepers and transom decks as part of an industry lead program. The main focus of the PhD project will be on research, development of a new composite transom deck systems with optimised material distribution that can safely carry expected static and dynamic loads, and satisfy the serviceability requirements. It will also investigate the behaviour of composite transom decks under static, dynamic and fatigue loadings, and evaluate in-service performance of the developed composite transom decks.

2. The successful candidate will be working as part of the newly funded $3 Million CRC-P project to develop polymer composite railway sleepers and transom decks as part of an industry lead program. The main focus of the PhD project will be on research, development and characterisation of particulate-filled resin (PFR) materials and fibre reinforcements for the composite railway sleepers and transom decks. It includes identifying new lower cost filler materials for polymer filled resin and characterise properties of new material options and establishing the constitutive properties of polymers and fibre reinforcements most suitable for composite railway sleepers and transom decks.

3. The successful candidate will be working as part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project, entitled "Lightweight, durable and self-sustainable modular composites buildings" in collaboration with the Monash University and the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. This project aims to establish a modular and multifunctional composite building system that is lightweight, self-sustainable and durable to aggressive environments. It will focus on the development of panelised wall and floor systems for modular building assembly using FRP structural members. Evaluation of the structural performance of the panelized FRP wall and floor systems will be conducted to gain a better understanding of reliability of the connection methods and appropriate installation techniques. Moreover, investigation on the overall behavior of the full building module will be conducted to ensure the integrity of the entire structure and help optimize the system in actual applications.

The candidates will be based in USQ Toowoomba and housed in an excellent research environment with the latest laboratory facilities and have the opportunity to work with highly qualified researchers. During the course of the PhD, the candidate will have the opportunity to attend (inter)national conferences to present their research.

Skills and experience

These projects are only suited to students who are highly driven and have a desire to pursue a high level research career. Applicants should possess an appropriate qualification for entry into the PhD training scheme, preferably in one of the following fields: Materials science/engineering, Polymer chemistry, Civil engineering, and Structural Engineering.

Applicants should have an outstanding track record of academic achievement, excellent laboratory skills that are relevant to the project and have the drive to lead this research-intensive PhD project. They should have the ability to think critically, rationally and independently. Excellent verbal and written English skills are essential.

To discuss these opportunities and for further information, please contact Assoc Prof Allan Manalo at Allan.manalo@usq.edu.au (https://staffprofile.usq.edu.au/Profile/Allan-Manalo)

To apply for EOI, please email Dr Allan Manalo and supply the following documentation: Cover letter indicating their project of interest, Complete Tertiary Academic Records (with grades/GPA scores, and official grading scale details), evidence of English language proficiency, and detailed Academic Resume/CV.

Job benefits and perks

Successful student will receive a tuition fee waive scholarship and a living allowance of AUD$30,000 per annum tax free for three years.
