Security Organizations / Start an ISACA Student Group on Campus
« on: July 08, 2015, 01:43:40 AM »
Take an important step toward fulfilling your career goals! Join a Student Group and connect with a supportive group of future professionals.
ISACA Student Groups (ISGs) encourage education beyond the classroom by allowing students to network and learn from each other, and connect with a supportive group of professionals. While ISGs do NOT require ISACA Student Membership, an ISG gives students the opportunity to get to know ISACA by interacting with professionals at events sponsored by the university and the local chapter. By participating in an ISG, students gain knowledge and experience that moves them ahead of the competition when they graduate.

Why start an ISACA Student Group?

Develop a forum for learning beyond the classroom
Organize fun campus events with students from other related disciplines (accounting, business, engineering, IT/computer science)
Gain leadership opportunities to add to a resume/CV
Connect with local chapter professionals
Get mentoring on career paths from experienced practitioners
Contact industry leaders with job opportunities post-graduation

To start an ISACA Student Group (ISG), encourage a faculty member to be become an Academic Advocate or to designate a faculty advisor to support the group.

Not sure if your university has an Academic Advocate? Email us at students@isaca.org to find out.

Please click the button below to access the ISACA student group toolkit for detailed information on how to set up a student group.

Security Organizations / ISACA Student Group Best Practices
« on: July 08, 2015, 01:31:55 AM »
Through a coordinated survey effort involving ISACA Student Group (ISG) leaders, Academic Advocates, Chapter leaders and volunteer committee members, we are pleased to be able to share with you these 12 valuable insights that have allowed some of the most successful and active ISGs to thrive.

We encourage you to consider these items whether you are seeking to start up an ISACA Student Group on your campus or if you already have an established ISG and are interested in improving on it. Please note—some of these recommendations are written specifically to assist students in their efforts while others are intended as Academic Advocate initiatives.

If you have any questions about forming an ISACA Student Group or would just like more information about the program, please email students@isaca.org.

12 Valuable Insights
Students should actively seek to hold an officer position within the ISG. Those students that have say it helped to enhance their networking and leadership skills, provided additional recognition for them in their chosen profession, and it also helped to build their resumes.

If interest in starting or continuing an ISG is low, consider partnering with other on-campus professional student groups (IIA, ACFE, etc.) or other departments at the university (i.e. Depts. of Accounting, Business Admin., Engineering, Computer Science, etc.). This will help successfully create one large group that can collaborate on joint activities and host group events.

Once your ISG is created and officially recognized, begin your succession planning right away. Informally discuss the upcoming school year, which students would benefit from participating, and which students would make good incoming leaders. Having these discussions early and often will help ensure successful continuation of the group long after the founding members have graduated.

Some Academic Advocates may find that running the week-to-week, month-to-month operations of the ISG challenging at times (even if you have an active ISG president). Consider involving other university faculty members (even those from other departments) to help with the planning and managing of ISG activities.

Have some fun business cards, ISG stickers, or pens printed up with your ISG logo. Use these as giveaways to promote your group on campus and encourage other students to participate.

If finding funds to host ISG events and activities is a challenge, consider asking the local ISACA Chapter to make a donation to help cover costs.

If additional funding is needed to host ISG events and activities, consider charging the members annual dues to participate in the student group. Those groups that do this successfully will often times have food at their meetings to help justify the cost of joining the group. ISGs can even secure sponsors (a local deli or pizza place) to help provide lunches for the meetings, so the actual cost for food would be marginal (or nothing at all).

ISG leaders should look to establish relationships with local ISACA Chapter members and see them as would-be “mentors”.

Be sure to work with the local Chapter to help schedule “mini- training events” or other similar events for students and members of the ISG once or twice throughout the year.

Work with the local Chapter to discuss the possibility of combining certain college or university events with on-going ISACA outreach events.

Students and ISG members are often welcome to attend local ISACA Chapter meetings. Contact the chapter ahead of time to discuss the possibility of attending their meetings.

Students and ISG members may also be invited to attend paid Chapter events at a reduced cost or no cost. Contact the Chapter to see what opportunities may be available.

Security Organizations / History of ISACA
« on: July 08, 2015, 01:20:51 AM »
ISACA was incorporated by individuals who recognized a need for a centralized source of information and guidance in the growing field of auditing controls for computer systems. Today, ISACA serves 140,000 professionals in 180 countries.

Overview
ISACA got its start in 1967, when a small group of individuals with similar jobs—auditing controls in the computer systems that were becoming increasingly critical to the operations of their organizations—sat down to discuss the need for a centralized source of information and guidance in the field. In 1969, the group formalized, incorporating as the EDP Auditors Association. In 1976 the association formed an education foundation to undertake large-scale research efforts to expand the knowledge and value of the IT governance and control field. Previously known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, ISACA now goes by its acronym only, to reflect the broad range of IT governance professionals it serves.

Today, ISACA’s constituency—more than 140,000 strong worldwide—is characterized by its diversity. Constituents live and work in more than 180 countries and cover a variety of professional IT-related positions—to name just a few, IS auditor, consultant, educator, IS security professional, regulator, chief information officer and internal auditor. Some are new to the field, others are at middle management levels and still others are in the most senior ranks. They work in nearly all industry categories, including financial and banking, public accounting, government and the public sector, utilities and manufacturing. This diversity enables members to learn from each other, and exchange widely divergent viewpoints on a variety of professional topics. It has long been considered one of ISACA’s strengths.

Global Network
Another of ISACA’s strengths is its chapter network. ISACA has more than 200 chapters established in over 80 countries worldwide, and those chapters provide members education, resource sharing, advocacy, professional networking and a host of other benefits on a local level. Find out if there’s a chapter near you.

Since its inception, ISACA has become a pace-setting global organization for information governance, control, security and audit professionals. Its IS auditing and IS control standards are followed by practitioners worldwide. Its research pinpoints professional issues challenging its constituents.

Its Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certification is recognized globally and has been earned by more than 109,000 professionals since inception. The Certified Information Security Manager (CISM) certification uniquely targets the information security management audience and has been earned by more than 25,000 professionals. The Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT) designation promotes the advancement of professionals who wish to be recognized for their IT governance-related experience and knowledge and has been earned by more than 6,000 professionals. The Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) designation for those who identify and manage risks through the development, implementation and maintenance of information systems controls has been earned by more than 17,000 professionals.

ISACA publishes a leading technical journal in the information control field, the ISACA Journal. It hosts a series of international conferences focusing on both technical and managerial topics pertinent to the IS assurance, control, security and IT governance professions. Together, ISACA and its affiliated IT Governance Institute lead the information technology control community and serve its practitioners by providing the elements needed by IT professionals in an ever-changing worldwide environment.
