Life Style / somne useful Cleaning Tips
« on: July 13, 2015, 01:30:08 PM »
The best way to dust blinds?
Close them, then wipe up and down with an old dryer sheet. It'll create an antistatic barrier that helps prevent dust from building up again.

Vinegar and water is a great deodorizer for a musty bathroom.
Spray your shower down as you're getting out. It really absorbs the odors, and the smell of vinegar goes away in an hour.

Vacuuming bathroom mats is a nightmare.
Toss them in the wash every week or two instead.

Dish liquid diluted with water is a great nontoxic all-purpose cleanser.
Just put two squirts in a spray bottle and fill it with water.

To clean your microwave oven, microwave a cup of water with some baking soda in it until it's boiling.
That eliminates odors and makes it super easy to wipe away all that stuck-on stuff.

Clean under stoves and refrigerators with a yardstick covered by a tube sock.

Shine your bathroom tiles with lemon oil.
It also helps prevent mold and mildew.

Life Style / Ways to Get Rid of Ants using everyday materials
« on: July 13, 2015, 01:08:05 PM »
■Lemons - Squirt some lemon juice on door thresholds and windowsills. Then squeeze a wedge into any holes or cracks the ants are coming through. Finally, scatter small slices of lemon peel around any outdoor entrances. The strong acidity and smell can help keep the pests away.

■ Flowerpots and teakettles  -Tired of getting stung by fire ants on your patio? Place a flowerpot upside down over the anthill, then pour boiling water through the drain hole to eliminate the insects’ house.

■ Herbs and Spices-  Pantry staples like sugar, flour, and certain seasonings can fall prey to ants. To keep your food safe, slip a bay leaf inside your storage containers. If you’re concerned about the flour or sugar picking up a bay leaf flavor, tape the leaf to the inside of the canister lid. This trick works inside cabinets, too, where sachets of sage, bay, cinnamon sticks, or whole cloves will smell pleasant while discouraging ants from getting cozy.

Life Style / 7 Weird Use of Deodorant
« on: July 13, 2015, 12:48:32 PM »
Silence a Squeaky Door: Rub onto hinges to stop irritating sounds.

Soothe Bug Bites: Swipe onto a mosquito bite to reduce itching. The aluminum salts in the deodorant help stop pain and swelling.

Prevent Blisters: Slide the gel variety around the sides and tops of clean, dry feet before slipping on a new pair of shoes. The deodorant lubricates problem areas to reduce rubbing.

Freshen Your Closet: Uncap your favorite scented variety and place it in the corner of your closet for a powerful potpourri.

Create Matte Cosmetics: Using your finger, dab deodorant under eyes and along the T-zone before applying makeup to solve shiny skin.

Keep Feet Odor-Free: Apply a thin layer of clear deodorant to the bottoms of your feet before you go to bed at night for wetness and odor protection that lasts through the next day.

Slip Into Jeans: Rub along your legs to easily slide into a tight pair of skinny jeans or your favorite fitted leather skirt.

Life Style / Safety Checklist for eye cosmetics (According to FDA)
« on: July 11, 2015, 03:49:22 PM »
If any eye cosmetic causes irritation, stop using it immediately. If irritation persists, see a doctor.

Avoid using eye cosmetics if you have an eye infection or the skin around the eye is inflamed. Wait until the area is healed. Discard any eye cosmetics you were using when you got the infection.

Be aware that there are bacteria on your hands that, if placed in the eye, could cause infections. Wash your hands before applying eye cosmetics.

Make sure that any instrument you place in the eye area is clean.

Don't share your cosmetics. Another person's bacteria may be hazardous to you.

Don't allow cosmetics to become covered with dust or contaminated with dirt or soil. Keep containers clean.

Don't use old containers of eye cosmetics. Manufacturers usually recommend discarding mascara two to four months after purchase.

Discard dried-up mascara. Don't add saliva or water to moisten it. The bacteria from your mouth may grow in the mascara and cause infection. Adding water may introduce bacteria and will dilute the preservative that is intended to protect against microbial growth.

Don't store cosmetics at temperatures above 85 degrees F. Cosmetics held for long periods in hot cars, for example, are more susceptible to deterioration of the preservative.

When applying or removing eye cosmetics, be careful not to scratch the eyeball or other sensitive area. Never apply or remove eye cosmetics in a moving vehicle.

Don't use any cosmetics near your eyes unless they are intended specifically for that use. For instance, don't use a lip liner as an eye liner. You may be exposing your eyes to contamination from your mouth, or to color additives that are not approved for use in the area of the eye.

Avoid color additives that are not approved for use in the area of the eye, such as "permanent" eyelash tints and kohl. Be especially careful to keep kohl away from children, since reports have linked it to lead poisoning.

Life Style / Refrigerator Strategies: Keeping Food Safe
« on: July 11, 2015, 03:40:47 PM »
In addition to keeping the temperature in your fridge at 40 °F, you can take additional steps to make sure your refrigerated foods stay as safe as possible.

Avoid "Overpacking." Cold air must circulate around refrigerated foods to keep them properly chilled.
Wipe Up Spills Immediately. In addition to helping reduce the growth of the Listeria bacteria (which can grow at refrigerated temperatures), getting rid of spills — especially drips from thawing meats — will help prevent "cross-contamination," where bacteria from one food spread to another.
Keep It Covered: Store refrigerated foods in covered containers or sealed storage bags, and check leftovers daily for spoilage.
Check Expiration Dates On Foods. If food is past its "use by" date, discard it. If you're not sure or if the food looks questionable, the simple rule is: "When in doubt, throw it out."
Clean The Fridge Out Frequently. Make this task part of your kitchen cleaning routine!

1. Watermelon snack

Sweet, refreshing, thirst-quenching—and bloating? Watermelon, as well as certain other fruits like apples, pears, and mangoes, has a high ratio of fructose to glucose (both sugars that occur naturally in fruit). This can cause gas and bloating in the estimated one in three people who has difficulty digesting fructose, according to my 21-Day Tummy coauthor, Kate Scarlata, RD.

2. Work deadline

“When you experience fight-or-flight symptoms, like a racing heart, your body diverts blood flow away from your GI tract, which slows down digestion,” says Dr. Levine. Heavy breathing, which occurs when you’re under stress, makes you swallow more air than usual and can also lead to bloating. To feel better, simply change your breathing pattern so you exhale for a few counts longer than you inhale. This turns off the stress response and moves your body into a calmer state.

3.Skipping exercise

The last thing you may want to do on a “fat day” is lace up your sneakers and squeeze into workout clothes. But physical activity stimulates the muscles of your digestive tract, which helps move through your GI tract the food and air bubbles that make you feel bloated. In one small German study, people who took a post-dinner stroll significantly sped up the time it took their body to digest their meal.

4. Vacation

Almost 50 percent of people become constipated when they travel, says Connecticut gastroenterologist Ed Levine, MD. When the bacteria in your intestines produce air, it can get trapped in your digestive tract and cause bloating. Prevent it by sticking to your bedtime and mealtime routines as much as possible.

5.Stomach bug

About 25 percent of patients who get gastroenteritis, a stomach infection, have bloating even after the illness clears. A likely suspect: small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). In SIBO patients, abnormal levels of microbes colonize the small intestine, which can lead to gas and bloating, says Henry Lin, MD, chief of gastroenterology at the New Mexico VA Health Care System.

Food and Nutrition Science / 7 Quick Cures for Hiccups
« on: July 08, 2015, 02:17:17 PM »
1.Swallow something sweet.
A spoonful of sugar is popular because its graininess could slightly irritate the esophagus, causing the phrenic nerves to "reset" themselves, although there is no proof of this.

2.…Or something sour.
Take a teaspoonful of vinegar. Its sour taste could stop a hiccup in its tracks.

3. Sip some hot sauce.
This probably works because the heat and burn are distracting enough to turn your body's focus on the burn, instead of the hiccup process.

4. Enjoy a little honey.
Put 1 teaspoon of honey, stirred in warm water, on the back of your tongue, and swallow it. Like dill, honey could potentially tickle the vagus nerve to make the hiccups stop.

5.Yummy chocolate remedy.
Eat some powdered chocolate drink mix (cocoa or Ovaltine) right off the spoon. Swallowing the spoonful isn't easy and should short-circuit the hiccups.

6. Brown bag 'em.
Breathe slowly and deeply into a small paper bag. (Stop if you feel light-headed.) This increases the carbon dioxide level in the blood and makes the diaphragm contract more deeply to bring in more oxygen, which may stop the spasms.

7. Try the paper towel trick.
Place a single layer of paper towel over the top of a glass, then drink through the towel. You'll have to "pull" harder with your diaphragm to suck up the water, and concentrated gulping counteracts spasmodic muscle movements.

Life Style / 6 Tricks to to Remove Water Stains From Wood
« on: July 08, 2015, 01:25:16 PM »
1.Baking Soda
Get those white marks — caused by hot cups or sweating glasses — off your coffee table or other wooden furniture by making a paste of 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon water. Gently rub the spot in a circular motion until it disappears. Remember not to use too much water.

2.Petroleum Jelly
Your most recent party left lots of watermark rings on your wood furniture. To make them disappear, apply petroleum jelly and let it sit overnight. In the morning, wipe the watermark away with the jelly.

3.Salt
Make watermarks left from glasses or bottles disappear by mixing 1 teaspoon salt with a few drops of water to form a paste. Gently rub the paste onto the ring with a soft cloth or sponge and work it over the spot until it’s gone. Restore the luster of your wood with furniture polish.

4.Toothpaste
You leave coasters around. But some people just won’t use them. To get rid of those telltale watermark rings left by sweating beverages, gently rub some non-gel toothpaste on the wood with a soft cloth. Then wipe it off with a damp cloth and let it dry before applying furniture polish. For even stronger cleaning power, mix equal parts white toothpaste and baking soda. Rub the paste parallel to the wood grain, wipe it off, and then polish with lemon oil.

5.Vinegar
To remove white rings left by wet glasses on wood furniture, mix equal parts vinegar and olive oil and apply it with a soft cloth while moving with the wood grain. Use another clean, soft cloth to shine it up. To get white water rings off leather furniture, dab them with a sponge soaked in full-strength white vinegar.

6.Car Wax
Someone forgot to use a coaster and now there’s an ugly white ring on the dining room table. When regular furniture polish doesn’t work, try using a dab of car wax. Trace the ring with your finger to apply the wax. Let it dry and buff with a soft cloth.

Food and Nutrition Science / Health Benefits of Green Tea - part 2
« on: July 08, 2015, 12:53:45 PM »
1. Fight a UTI
Drinking 2 to 3 cups of green tea daily can help clear up a urinary tract infection. The tea contains antioxidants that one study found can reduce bladder inflammation. Other studies have shown that green tea drinkers have a 40 percent lower incidence of UTIs than those who did not drink green tea.

2.Relieve allergies
Green tea is rich in flavonoids, plant chemicals that protect against inflammation. For struggles with allergies, try drinking a few cups of tea a day and see if the sinus inflammation goes down.

3.Reduce puffy eyes
Some herbalists claim that tea bag compresses speed the healing of a black eye, but to calm puffy tissues, take two wet green tea bags, place them on tired or swollen eyes, and lie down for 15 to 20 minutes as the tea soothes and refreshes.

4.Reduce asthma symptoms
The antioxidant quercetin, found in green tea, has been shown to inhibit the release of inflammatory substances from mast cells, which are involved in allergic responses. (This is how some asthma drugs work.) Try drinking two cups of green tea day to keep asthma symptoms at bay.

5.Cut down on stress
Green tea is lower in caffeine than most other teas, so you may be able to drink the five cups a day that lowered psychological stress in a large group of Japanese people in a recent study done at Sendai’s Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine. The researchers didn’t identify any particular component of green tea that might have been soothing, but animal studies suggest that one compound, EGCC, had both sedative and hypnotic effects that tamp down the body’s production of stress chemicals.

6. Provide off-the-charts levels of antioxidants
Scientists at Tufts University compared the "ORAC" (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, a measurement of the total antioxidant power of foods and other chemical substances) of black and green tea and 22 fruits and vegetables, and found green tea brewed for five minutes outranked even so-called superfoods on the produce list. And EGCC, a catechin found in tea (and shows highest levels in green tea) has been shown to protect the DNA in cells from cancer-inducing changes. Antioxidants are essential for neutralizing and removing free radicals found in the bloodstream that can damage cells and cause disease. This antioxidant ability may be why green tea is believed to play a role in cancer prevention.

Food and Nutrition Science / Health Benefits of Green Tea - part 1
« on: July 08, 2015, 12:50:06 PM »
1. Help prevent multiple cancers
The study of green tea and cancer prevention is still in early stages, but the results are promising. Researchers suspect that polyphenols in green tea help kill cancer cells and stop their progression, an important role to prevent various cancers.

• In a study of 472 women with breast cancer, those who drank the most green tea experienced the least spread of the disease. Researchers also found that women in the early stages of breast cancer who drank at least five cups of green tea every day during their diagnoses were less likely to have the disease recur after the completed treatment.

2. Make your heart healthier
Green tea contains significant amounts of flavonoids, antioxidants that protect against heart disease by slowing the breakdown of LDL cholesterol, preventing blood clots, and improving blood vessel function. Green tea is also associated with lower cholesterol and lower rates of artery blockages. People who drink a cup or two a day have a 46 percent lower risk of developing narrowed arteries.

3.Soothe arthritis
To cut down on aches and pains, try to sip four cups of green tea a day. The tea contains quercetin, a chemical compound that acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. In a recent study conducted at Case Western Reserve University, researchers gave mice the equivalent of four cups of green tea a day, then gave them a substance that would normally produce rheumatoid arthritis. The tea-drinking mice were far less likely to develop arthritis than mice that drank water.

4.Boost your brain
Researchers from the Netherlands confirmed in a recent study that two green tea compounds, L-theanine and caffeine, can significantly boost levels of attention and alertness, building on what is already known about tea’s brain benefits. Green tea is less likely to make you jittery and anxious than other energy-boosting drinks, because it contains lower levels of caffeine than other teas or coffee.

5.Clear up acne
A University of Miami study found that even a mild dose of green tea’s antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds erased almost two-thirds of pimples from people with mild to moderate acne when used twice daily for six weeks. To benefit, make a cup of green tea, let cool, and use as a face wash, or lay the tea bag directly on the skin to act as a compress for particularly bad pimples.

Scientists have figured out how to reprogram the blood of cancer patients to attack their leukaemia, and 19 of the 30 patients who received the treatment remain in complete remission.

A team of researchers led by immunotherapist Carl June from the University of Pennsylvania in the US has announced the results of a new treatment for leukaemia patients that turns their own blood cells against their disease. The researchers chose to work with patients who were dealing with particularly aggressive cases of leukaemia. All of the participants in the study had cancers that had returned at least four times before.

According to Elizabeth Lopatto at the Verge, the treatment works by first having a patient's T cells - a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the body’s immune response - harvested through a blood transfusion process. These T cells are then engineered to seek out a particular protein called a B cell receptor, found on the surface of the patient’s B cells. B cells are another type of white blood cell that’s specifically targeted by leukaemia.

The patient’s altered T cells will then be transplanted back into their blood stream so they can start hunting B cell receptor proteins, and kill the leukaemia and the B cells they're attached to.

According to the study, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, of the 30 children and adults that received the treatment, complete remission was achieved in 27 patients (90 percent). Remission was sustained past the six-month point in 19 of the 30 patients.

The team is now working on easing the side effects of the treatment, which include fever, nausea, muscle pain and difficulty breathing.

Pharmacy / Revolutionary Step-up by revolutionary cell transplantation
« on: October 22, 2014, 04:15:20 PM »
A man named Darek Fidyka had been paralysed for almost two years and was told he would never walk again. But Recently he has recovered sensation and movement in his legs after receiving a revolutionary cell transplant.

The transplant was a world-first collaboration effort by surgeons at the Wroclaw University Hospital in Poland and scientists at University College London’s Institute of Neurology in the UK, and the findings are published in the journal Cell Transplantation.

The cells that were used to achieve this miracle were taken from Fidyka's olfactory bulb, the structure that gives us our sense of smell. These nerve cells are continually damaged due to the different odours we smell and must be replaced regularly, which means the olfactory bulb is a very rich source of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) - specialist cells that form part of the sense of smell.OECs provide the pathway for the damaged fibres in our nose to grow back, enabling nerve cells to regenerate themselves throughout our lifetime.

The technique involved first removing one of Fidyka's olfactory bulbs, and culturing it in the laboratory to generate about 500,000 OECs. The OECs were then transplanted into the damaged area in his spinal cord. His incredible recovery suggests that the OECs provided a pathway for the fibres around the injury to rejoin, by creating a “nerve bridge” between the damaged ends of the spinal cord. This regeneration reopened communication pathways between his brain controlling muscles and his lower body.

The researcher team believes as this procedure is further developed,  will result in a historic change in the currently hopeless outlook for people disabled by spinal cord injury.

Pharmacy / Effective handling of Nipah outbreak in South Asia
« on: September 22, 2014, 02:08:40 PM »
Nipah is a deadly virus, killing more than half the people it infects. It originates in bats, crossing into humans who come in contact with them. It first causes fever, as do many other ailments, leaving health care workers with few early hints that they’re dealing with something contagious and potentially deadly.

“It” shares many characteristics with the Ebola virus rampaging through West Africa, but is called Nipah, after the village in Malaysia in which it was first detected in 1998. In 2001, it spread to one of the world’s most densely populated nations, Bangladesh, which packs 150 million people into a space the size of Wisconsin. Two hundred and eighty cases were detected through July of this year, 198 of which were fatal, a 71 percent mortality rate.

In Bangladesh, its spread was again traced to fruit bats, though the ailment infected people through a different route. Transmission to humans came through the practice of harvesting date palm sap.Investigation showed that the bats would fly to the trees and lick the date palm juice, infecting the containers hung on the trees to collect the sap.

Public health officials employed anthropologists’ expertise and consulted widely. The result was a plan to use bamboo mats to cover the collection jars, which kept the bats away. The officials also stepped up efforts to detect cases early and designed a series of public health messages appropriate for the local population. The messages warned against sharing food with sick people or eating their leftovers. The messages also advised people not to share beds with sick people or, if they must, to sleep with their backs to them so transmission was less likely. People also were told to wash their hands after caring for the sick.

Diseases like Ebola and Nipah will continue to cross from animals to humans, and public health officials should ferret out the lessons available in nations like Bangladesh.
