For many people, mobile phones are a part of modern life. Although the purpose of this technology revolves around language and communication, its application to language learning still appears to be underutilized. This is changing, as the widespread use of this handheld technology offers numerous opportunities to use functions that are ideal for exposing learners to communicative interaction on their language-learning journey. One beneficial function of the smartphone is its ability to exchange text and multimedia between users, which is a benefit that is enhanced through the availability of free messaging apps that facilitate the exchanges. In order to explore the messaging function of smartphones and how teachers can employ it to promote spoken communication, this article will describe ways to use text, audio, and imagery inside and outside the English language classroom. - See more at: http://americanenglish.state.gov/resources/english-teaching-forum-volume-53-number-1#child-1880

English / Dark histroy of Mother's day
« on: May 10, 2015, 01:56:41 PM »
This year mother's day turns 100. We wish moms with passionate words and wonderful gifts. but this day also reminds a pathetic details of a mother.

It was founded for mourning women to remember fallen soldiers and work for peace. And when the holiday went commercial, its greatest champion, Anna Jarvis, gave everything to fight it, dying penniless and broken in a sanitarium.
It all started in the 1850s, when West Virginia women's organizer Ann Reeves Jarvis—Anna's mother—held Mother's Day work clubs to improve sanitary conditions and try to lower infant mortality by fighting disease and curbing milk contamination, according to historian Katharine Antolini of West Virginia Wesleyan College. The groups also tended wounded soldiers from both sides during the U.S. Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
In the postwar years Jarvis and other women organized Mother's Friendship Day picnics and other events as pacifist strategies to unite former foes. Julia Ward Howe, for one—best known as the composer of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"—issued a widely read "Mother's Day Proclamation" in 1870, calling for women to take an active political role in promoting peace.
Around the same time, Jarvis had initiated a Mother's Friendship Day for Union and Confederate loyalists across her state. But it was her daughter Anna who was most responsible for what we call Mother's Day—and who would spend most of her later life fighting what it had become.

English / Collaborative Problem Sloving
« on: May 07, 2015, 11:52:23 AM »
Collaborative problem-solving has been conceptualized as consisting of five broad  strands, the capacity of an individual to: recognize the perspective of other persons  in a group; participate as a member of the group by contributing their knowledge, experience and expertise in a constructive way; recognize the need for contributions and how to manage them; identify structure and procedure involved in resolving a problem; and, as a member of the collaborative group, build and develop knowledge and understanding.

English / Learn a word every day
« on: February 05, 2015, 12:04:29 PM »
Every day we encounter with some familiar words. Thousands words remain unused as we hardly know their meanings. So let's try to learn a word a everyday.

Whippersnapper:

A whippersnapper is someone who is younger than you are but also irritatingly overconfident and impertinent, like your little smart aleck cousin.

The word whippersnapper describes a specific kind of bratty, know-it-all kid, and it's only used by an older person who is talking about a younger person. It's a fairly old-fashioned word, having been around since the late-1600s, when it apparently arose out of "whip-snapper," which implied a general sense of lots of noise and very little importance. Around the same time, the word "whipperginnie" was a derogatory term for a woman.

Synonyms: a)Jacknapes: It means  a colorful but very old fashioned way to describe a rascal or a whippersnapper. Your great-grandfather might shake his cane and yell, "Get off my lawn, you jackanapes!" when the neighbor kids lose their basketball in his yard, but they're unlikely to know what the word means. Jackanapes is from the fifteenth century, and it's thought to come from the phrase "Jack of Naples," or to have some connection to the word apes, but experts are uncertain.

b) Lightweight: Break lightweight apart — light + weight — and you see its definition right there in its root words. Someone who is called a lightweight is either a professional boxer who weighs under 135 pounds or he's someone with little importance or ability. When a company is looking to make layoffs, it's the lightweight employees, or those who just aren't important to the business that often get axed first.

English / Google Classroom and My Presentation
« on: January 14, 2015, 01:44:00 PM »
It is really challenging to work with new technology. I have started using Google Classroom from Fall 2014. To be very honest I have a little progress in ensuring a high quality virtual learning through Google Classroom due to very slow internet speed. But I am really happy to present my presentation on it in 7th Belta international conference. The response from the audience was great.

Public Health / Meditation
« on: January 10, 2015, 12:46:00 PM »
Meditation is helpful to reduce stress. It can make one balanced and improve patience and mental health.
If stress has you anxious, tense and worried, consider trying meditation. Spending even a few minutes in meditation can restore your calm and inner peace.

Anyone can practice meditation. It's simple and inexpensive, and it doesn't require any special equipment.

And you can practice meditation wherever you are — whether you're out for a walk, riding the bus, waiting at the doctor's office or even in the middle of a difficult business meeting.
Understanding meditation

Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. Meditation originally was meant to help deepen understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life. These days, meditation is commonly used for relaxation and stress reduction.

Meditation is considered a type of mind-body complementary medicine. Meditation produces a deep state of relaxation and a tranquil mind.

During meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. This process may result in enhanced physical and emotional well-being.
Benefits of meditation

Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both your emotional well-being and your overall health.

And these benefits don't end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help carry you more calmly through your day and may improve certain medical conditions.
Meditation and emotional well-being

When you meditate, you clear away the information overload that builds up every day and contributes to your stress.

The emotional benefits of meditation can include:

Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
Building skills to manage your stress
    Increasing self-awareness
    Focusing on the present
    Reducing negative emotions

Meditation and illness

Meditation might also be useful if you have a medical condition, especially one that may be worsened by stress.

While a growing body of scientific research supports the health benefits of meditation, some researchers believe it's not yet possible to draw conclusions about the possible benefits of meditation.

With that in mind, some research suggests that meditation may help people manage symptoms of conditions such as:

    Anxiety disorders
    Asthma
    Cancer
    Depression
    Heart disease
    High blood pressure
    Pain
    Sleep problems

Be sure to talk to your health care provider about the pros and cons of using meditation if you have any of these conditions or other health problems. In some cases, meditation can worsen symptoms associated with certain mental and physical health conditions.

Meditation isn't a replacement for traditional medical treatment. But it may be a useful addition to your other treatment.
Types of meditation

Meditation is an umbrella term for the many ways to a relaxed state of being. There are many types of meditation and relaxation techniques that have meditation components. All share the same goal of achieving inner peace.

English / Good mosquitoes to fight dengue fever
« on: September 25, 2014, 03:56:16 PM »
Dengue!!! It causes because of mosquitoes. But mosquitoes can give you remedy from dengue fever.

Brazilian researchers in Rio de Janeiro have released thousands of mosquitoes infected with bacteria that suppress dengue fever.

The hope is they will multiply, breed and become the majority of mosquitoes, thus reducing cases of the disease.

The initiative is part of a programme also taking place in Australia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The intercellular bacteria, Wolbachia, being introduced cannot be transmitted to humans.

The programme started in 2012 says Luciano Moreira of the Brazilian research institute Fiocruz, who is leading the project in Brazil .

"Our teams performed weekly visits to the four neighbourhoods in Rio being targeted. Mosquitoes were analysed after collection in special traps.

"Transparency and proper information for the households is a priority. "

Ten thousands mosquitoes will be released each month for four months with the first release in Tubiacanga, in the north of Rio.

Good bacteria

The bacterium Wolbachia is found in 60% of insects. It acts like a vaccine for the mosquito which carries dengue, Aedes aegypti, stopping the dengue virus multiplying in its body.

Wolbachia also has an effect on reproduction. If a contaminated male fertilises the eggs of a female without the bacteria, these eggs do not turn into larvae.

If the male and female are contaminated or if only a female has the bacteria, all future generations of mosquito will carry Wolbachia.

As a result, Aedes mosquitoes with Wolbachia become predominant without researchers having to constantly release more contaminated insects.

In Australia this happened within 10 weeks on average.

The research on Wolbachia began at the University of Monash in Australia in 2008. The researchers allowed the mosquitoes to feed on their own arms for five years because of concerns at the time Wolbachia could infect humans and domestic animals.

Three more neighbourhoods will be targeted next, and large scale studies to evaluate the effect of the strategy are planned for 2016.

Dengue re-emerged in Brazil in 1981 after an absence of more than 20 years.

Over the next 30 years, seven million cases were reported.

Brazil leads the world in the number of dengue cases, with 3.2 million cases and 800 deaths reported in the 2009-14 period.

English / The Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania
« on: September 20, 2014, 03:39:24 PM »
The Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania is a tomb located on the road between the cities of Cherchell and Algiers, in Algeria. It is the final resting place of Berber Juba II and Cleopatra Selene II, who were the last king and queen of Mauretania. Cleopatra Selene II was the only daughter of the famed Queen Cleopatra of Egypt and her husband Mark Antony. The mausoleum was built in 3 BC by King Juba II himself intended not just for him and his wife, but as a dynastic funeral monument for their royal descendants.

The tomb is known by various names. It is sometimes referred to as the Mausoleum of Juba and Cleopatra Selene. The French call it Tombeau de la Chretienne or "the tomb of the Christian woman", because there is a cross-like shape of the division lines on the false door. In Arabic, the mausoleum is called the Kubr-er-Rumia or Kbor er Roumia, which means the tomb of the Roman woman.

English / Sochi National Park, Russia
« on: September 20, 2014, 03:36:44 PM »
The world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge opened this summer in Sochi National Park, Russia. Located on the extreme corner of the National Park, the 1,800-foot-long bridge was built over a picturesque 650 foot gorge, and offers visitors a breathtaking view of the mountains and the river below. Another attraction is bungee jumping. There are several different points on the bridge from which you can bungee. The bridge is part of the AJ Hackett Sochi Skypark that was opened around the same time as this bridge.

The Sochi Skypark bridge was developed in collaboration with New Zealand, and it took two years, 740 tons of metal and 2,000 cubic meters of concrete to construct. The bridge is designed to withstand a 9-magnitude earthquake and the simultaneous presence of 3,000 people over it.

English / Lake Amadeus, Australia
« on: September 20, 2014, 03:32:49 PM »
Lake Amadeus is a huge salt lake located the southwest corner of Australia's Northern Territory, about 50 km north of Uluru or Ayers Rock. Another, slightly smaller, Lake Neale is located adjacent to the northwest. Both lakes lie on the Amadeus Basin that was filled with sediments eroded from the nearby mountains more than 500 million years ago. Because of the aridity, the lakes are inundated only during periods of heavy rain. For the most part, Lake Amadeus remains dry and coated with a thick crust of brilliant white salt. Dozens of small islands of red sand protrude centimeters above the surface of the lake. The plants that have taken root on these sandy islands are very hardy, and able to withstand salt as well as heat and drought.
