Allied Health Science / SWELLING AND IT'S CAUSES
« on: June 20, 2013, 09:08:28 AM »

Swelling is an increase in the size or a change in the shape of an area of the body. Swelling can be caused by collection of body fluid, tissue growth, or abnormal movement or position of tissue.

Most people will have swelling at some time. When it is hot and have stood or sat in the same position for a long time, swelling in feet and ankles  MAY BE NOTICED. Staying in one position for any length of time increases the risk that the lower legs, feet, or hands will swell because body fluid will normally move down a limb from the effects of gravity. Swelling can also be caused by heat-related problems, such as heat edema from working or being active in a hot environment.

Body fluid can collect in different tissue spaces of the body (localized) or can affect the whole body (generalized). Causes of localized swelling include:

•   Injury to a specific body area. Bruising (contusion) from an injury is caused by tears in the small blood vessels under the skin. Bleeding can also affect the joint (hemarthrosis) or the area that cushions and lubricates the joint (traumatic bursitis). Swelling can affect just one area or may involve large sections of the body, such as swelling that occurs following a motor vehicle accident.

•   Infection, which can occur in a joint or under the skin. An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms at the site of infected tissue. Cellulitis is a skin infection that can cause mild or severe swelling.

•   Burns, which can cause swelling at the site of the burn or in a larger area around the burn.

•   Inflammation that occurs when tissue is irritated by overuse or repeated motion.

o   Swelling of the tendon and swelling caused by a series of small tears around a tendon (tendinosis) can occur together or separately.

o   Swelling of the sac that cushions and lubricates the joint (bursitis) can be caused by prolonged or repeated pressure or by activities that require repeated twisting or rapid joint movements.

•   Insect bites or stings. Most insect bites or stings cause a small amount of redness or swelling. Some people have an allergic reaction to a bite or sting and develop a lot of swelling, redness, and itching.

•   Other causes, such as swelling related to a saclike structure with clear fluid, blood, or pus (cyst) or a swollen organ, such as a salivary gland. For more information, see the topic Swollen Glands.

Causes of generalized swelling include:
•   Allergic reaction. Sudden swelling of the hands and face may be a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) and needs immediate medical evaluation.
•   Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma. These diseases can cause swelling when the body produces antibodies and other cells that attack and destroy tissues in the body.
•   Medicines. Some medicines change how body fluids circulate, causing swelling. Swelling may also occur as an allergic reaction to a medicine.
•   Circulation problems related to certain medical conditions, such as peripheral arterial disease, heart failure, diabetes, or kidney disease. Thrombophlebitis causes swelling of an extremity when a blood clot interrupts blood flow in a vein in the arm or leg.
•   Fluid that accumulates in the abdomen (ascites) because of other problems, such as malnutrition, obesity, cirrhosis, or liver disease.

Other symptoms are associated with specific forms of anemia.

Anemia Caused by Iron Deficiency

People with an iron deficiency may experience these symptoms:
•   A hunger for strange substances such as paper, ice, or dirt (a condition called pica)
•   Upward curvature of the nails, referred to as koilonychias
•   Soreness of the mouth with cracks at the corners

Anemia Caused by Vitamin B12 Deficiency

People whose anemia is caused by a deficiency of Vitamin B12 may have these symptoms:
•   A tingling, "pins and needles" sensation in the hands or feet
•   Lost sense of touch
•   A wobbly gait and difficulty walking
•   Clumsiness and stiffness of the arms and legs
•   Dementia
•   Hallucinations, paranoia, and schizophrenia

Anemia Caused by Chronic Lead Poisoning

Chronic lead poisoning may lead to these symptoms:
•   A blue-black line on the gums referred to as a lead line
•   Abdominal pain
•   Constipation

Allied Health Science / WHY A PACEMAKER IS NEEDED
« on: June 20, 2013, 08:46:36 AM »
A PACEMAKER IS A SMALL DEVICE THAT'S PLACED IN THE CHEST OR ABDOMEN TO HELP CONTROL ABNORMAL HEART RHYTHMS. THIS DEVICE USES ELECTRICAL PULSES TO PROMPT THE HEART TO BEAT AT A NORMAL RATE.

PACEMAKERS ARE USED TO TREAT ARRHYTHMIAS WHICH ARE PROBLEMS WITH THE RATE OR RHYTHM OF THE HEARTBEAT. DURING AN ARRHYTHMIA, THE HEART CAN BEAT TOO FAST, TOO SLOW, OR WITH AN IRREGULAR RHYTHM.

DURING AN ARRHYTHMIA, THE HEART MAY NOT BE ABLE TO PUMP ENOUGH BLOOD TO THE BODY. THIS CAN CAUSE SYMPTOMS SUCH AS FATIGUE (TIREDNESS), SHORTNESS OF BREATH, OR FAINTING. SEVERE ARRHYTHMIAS CAN DAMAGE THE BODY'S VITAL ORGANS AND MAY EVEN CAUSE LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS OR DEATH.

A PACEMAKER CAN RELIEVE SOME ARRHYTHMIA SYMPTOMS, SUCH AS FATIGUE AND FAINTING. A PACEMAKER ALSO CAN HELP A PERSON WHO HAS ABNORMAL HEART RHYTHMS RESUME A MORE ACTIVE LIFESTYLE.

WHAT DOES PACEMAKER DO

Faulty electrical signaling in the heart causes arrhythmias. Pacemakers use low-energy electrical pulses to overcome this faulty electrical signaling. Pacemakers can:
•   Speed up a slow heart rhythm.
•   Help control an abnormal or fast heart rhythm.
•   Make sure the ventricles contract normally if the atria are quivering instead of beating with a normal rhythm
•   Coordinate electrical signaling between the upper and lower chambers of the heart.
•   Coordinate electrical signaling between the ventricles. Pacemakers that do this are called cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices. CRT devices are used to treat heart failure.
•   Prevent dangerous arrhythmias caused by a disorder called long QT syndrome.
•   Pacemakers also can monitor and record your heart's electrical activity and heart rhythm. Newer pacemakers can monitor your blood temperature, breathing rate, and other factors. They also can adjust your heart rate to changes in your activity.
•   Pacemakers can be temporary or permanent. Temporary pacemakers are used to treat short-term heart problems, such as a slow heartbeat that's caused by a heart attack, heart surgery, or an overdose of medicine.
•   Temporary pacemakers also are used during emergencies. They might be used until your doctor can implant a permanent pacemaker or until a temporary condition goes away. If you have

Science Discussion Forum / NASA'S VISION - FUTURE AIR TRAVEL
« on: June 04, 2013, 09:58:43 AM »
NASA'S VISION OF FUTURE AIR TRAVEL

A sonic boom is the sound associated with the shock waves created by an object traveling through the air faster than the speed of sound. Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding much like an explosion. The crack of a supersonic bullet passing overhead is an example of a sonic boom in miniature.

Ability to fly at supersonic speeds over land in civil aircraft depends on our ability to reduce the level of sonic booms. NASA has been exploring a variety of options for quieting the boom, starting with design concepts and moving through wind tunnel tests to flight tests of new technologies.

This future aircraft design concept for supersonic flight over land comes from the team led by the Lockheed Martin Corporation. The team used simulation tools to show it was possible to achieve over-land flight by dramatically lowering the level of sonic booms through the use of an "inverted-V" engine-under wing configuration.

Common Forum/Request/Suggestions / TRAVELLING AT SUPERSONIC SPEED
« on: June 04, 2013, 09:38:46 AM »
TRAVELLING AT SUPERSONIC SPEED

SUPERSONIC SPEED IS A RATE OF TRAVEL OF AN OBJECT THAT EXCEEDS THE SPEED OF SOUND. FOR OBJECTS TRAVELING IN DRY AIR OF A TEMPERATURE OF 20 °C, THIS SPEED IS APPROXIMATELY 1,235 KM/H.

SPEEDS GREATER THAN FIVE TIMES THE SPEED OF SOUND ARE OFTEN REFERRED TO AS HYPERSONIC.
FLIGHT DURING WHICH ONLY SOME PARTS OF THE AIR AROUND AN OBJECT, SUCH AS THE ENDS OF ROTOR BLADES, REACH SUPERSONIC SPEEDS ARE CALLED TRANSONIC.

Most modern fighter aircraft are supersonic, but there have been supersonic passenger aircraft, namely Concorde and the Tupolev Tu-144. Both these passenger aircraft and some modern fighters are also capable of supercruise, a condition of sustained supersonic flight without the use of an afterburner. Due to its ability to supercruise for several hours and the relatively high frequency of flight over several decades, Concorde spent more time flying supersonically than all other aircraft combined by a considerable margin. it profitably flew these routes in less than half the time of other airliners. With only 20 aircraft built, the development of Concorde was a substantial economic loss; Since Concorde's final retirement flight on November 26, 2003 after a crash, there are no supersonic passenger aircraft left in service.

Most spacecraft, most notably the Space Shuttle are supersonic at least during portions of their reentry, though the effects on the spacecraft are reduced by low air densities. During ascent, launch vehicles generally avoid going supersonic below 30 km (~98,400 feet) to reduce air drag.

TIME WILL END IN FIVE BILLION YEARS, PHYSICISTS PREDICT

Our universe has existed for nearly 14 billion years, and  the universe should continue to exist for billions of years more.

But according to a new paper, there's one theory for the origins of the universe that predicts time itself will end in just five billion years— around the time our sun is slated to die.

The prediction comes from the theory of eternal inflation, which says our universe is part of the multiverse. This vast structure is made up of an infinite number of universes, each of which can spawn an infinite number of daughter universes.

The problem with a multiverse is that anything that can happen will happen an infinite number of times, and that makes calculating probabilities—such as the odds that Earth-size planets are common—seemingly impossible.

The attached file shows the Cat's Eye nebula, seen in a Hubble picture, is an example of what our sun may look like when it dies.

BLACK HOLES -----  THE MOST FASCINATING OBJECTS IN SPACE

Black hole is a great amount of matter packed into a very small area – it is like a star ten times more massive than the Sun squeezed into a sphere in a small space.
The result is a gravitational field so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. In recent years, NASA instruments have painted a new picture of these strange objects that are, to many, the most fascinating objects in space.

Intense X-ray flares thought to be caused by a black hole devouring a star.

The term was given in 1967 by Princeton physicist John Wheeler. Black holes were predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity, which showed that when a massive star dies, it leaves behind a small, dense remnant core. If the core's mass is more than about three times the mass of the Sun, the equations showed, the force of gravity overwhelms all other forces and produces a black hole.

Scientists can't directly observe black holes with telescopes that detect x-rays, light, or other forms of electromagnetic radiation. We can, however, infer the presence of black holes and study them by detecting their effect on other matter nearby.

ONE STAR'S END IS A BLACK HOLE'S BEGINNING

Most black holes form from the remnants of a large star that dies in a supernova explosion. If the total mass of the star is large enough (about three times the mass of the Sun), it can be proven theoretically that no force can keep the star from collapsing under the influence of gravity. However, as the star collapses, a strange thing occurs. As the surface of the star nears an imaginary surface called the "event horizon," time on the star slows relative to the time kept by observers far away. When the surface reaches the event horizon, time stands still, and the star can collapse no more - it is a frozen collapsing object.

Science Discussion Forum / STROKE AND IT'S CAUSE
« on: May 25, 2013, 02:29:16 PM »
Stroke is a medical emergency and the third leading cause of death in the U.S. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts or, more commonly, when a blockage develops. Without treatment, cells in the brain quickly begin to die. The result can be serious disability or death.

Stroke: Time = Brain Damage

Every second counts when seeking treatment for a stroke. When deprived of oxygen, brain cells begin dying within minutes. There are clot-busting drugs that can curb brain damage, but they have to be used within three hours of the initial stroke symptoms. Once brain tissue has died, the body parts controlled by that area won't work properly. This is why stroke is a top cause of long-term disability.

Diagnosing a Stroke

When someone with stroke symptoms arrives in the ER, the first step is to determine which type of stroke is occurring. There are two main types, and they are not treated the same way. A CT scan can help doctors determine whether the symptoms are coming from a blocked blood vessel or a bleeding one. Additional tests may also be used to find the location of a blood clot or bleeding within the brain

What Causes a Stroke
A common cause of stroke is hardening of the arteries. Plaque made of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances builds up in the arteries, leaving less space for blood to flow. A blood clot may lodge in this narrow space and cause an ischemic stroke. Atherosclerosis also makes it easier for a clot to form. Hemorrhagic strokes often result from uncontrolled high blood pressure that causes a weakened artery to burst.

Common Forum/Request/Suggestions / KIDNEY FAILURE AND DIALYSIS
« on: May 20, 2013, 01:45:26 PM »
WHAT IS DIALYSIS
Dialysis is the artificial process of eliminating waste and unwanted water  from the blood. Dialysis is used for patients who have become ill and have acute kidney failure (temporary loss of kidney function), or for fairly stable patients who have permanently lost kidney function

When we are healthy our kidneys regulate our body levels of water and minerals, and remove waste..

NECESSITY OF DIALYSIS

Approximately 1,500 liters of blood are filtered by a healthy person's kidneys each day. We could not live if waste products were not removed from our kidneys. Without dialysis the amount of waste products in the blood would increase and eventually reach levels that would cause coma and death.

Dialysis is also used to rapidly remove toxins or drugs from the blood.

15 Benefits of Ayatul Kursi

*1. Our Holy prophet (SAW) has said: whoever recites the first 4 ayats
of Surae Baqarah, then Ayatul Kursi and then the last 3 ayats of Surae Baqarah will not be inflicted with any kind of difficulty in his wealth or himself, Shaitaan will not come near him and he will not forget the Qur'an.

*2. Imam Ali (AS) was told by our Holy Prophet: Qur'an is a great word, and Surae Baqarah is the leader of the Qur'an and Ayatul Kursi is the leader of Surae Baqarah. In Ayatul Kursi there are 50 words and for each word there are 50 blessings and good in it.

*3. One who recites Ayatul Kursi every morning will be in the protection, safety of Allah until the night.

*4. If one ties this to ones wealth or chidren, they will be safe from Shaitaan.

*5. Our Holy Prophet (SAWW) has said: These things increase ones memory; sweets, meat of an animal near the neck, Adas(Lentils), cold bread
    and recitation of Ayatul Kursi.

*6. For those of our dear ones who have passed away, recitation of Ayatul Kursi and giving it as Hadiya to them, gives them light (noor) in the
    grave.

*7. Frequent recitation makes ones own death easy.

*8. When leaving home, if one recites it once, the Almighty has one group of Angels to come and protect you. If recited twice, 2 groups of
Angels are assigned to do this. If recited 3 times Allah tells the Angels not to worry as the Almighty himself takes care of him.

*9. The Holy Prophet (saw) has said: If one recites Ayatul Kursi before going to sleep, Allah will send an Angel to come and look after you and protect you till the morning. His home, family and also neighbours will remain in safety until morning.

*10. When one is alone in the home, recitation of Ayatul Kursi and asking Allah to help will make you remain calm and you will not fear.

*11. The Holy Prophet has said: When leaving home,if one recites Ayatul Kursi the Allah will send 70,000 Angels to do Istighfaar for him until he returns home, and upon his return Poverty will be removed from him.

*12. If one recites this after doing Wudhoo, the 5th Imam (AS) has said: Allah will give him a reward of 40 years of Ibadaat, his position will be raised in the Heavens 40 times (levels) and will marry him to 40 Horains.

*13. One who recites it after every prayer, thier salaat will be accepted, they will remain in the safety of the Almighty and He will protect
    them.

*14. Allah (SWT) told P.Musa (AS): If one recites it after every salaat, the Almighty will make his heart a thankful one(Shakireen), will give him a
reward of the prophets, and his deeds will be like those of the truthful(Siddiqeen) and nothing except death will stop will stop him from
    going into heaven.

*15. To increase light or vision (noor) in the eyes, recite Surae Alhamd once, then Ayatul Kursi and then once the following dua:- "U-eedhu nora  basaree binuril lahi alladhi la yutfaa", "I seek refuge for the light of my eyes by the light of Allah(SWT), which does not become extinguished".
