« on: July 16, 2011, 06:02:46 PM »
Respected Forum Admin,
When I used to browse foreign universities' websites I find that there are forum & blogs where students can write their own views. Now, we can also write in forum & blog. I must appreciate the inclusion of forum in our university website. It's really a superb step. But I can not upload .docx file as well as files more than 2.5mb. We, most of the students, use Microsoft office 7 or 10. There are some features which is not up-loadable right now.

I would like to request you if it is possible please add  option of uploading .docx files & larger files (3-5mb). I would be highly benefited if please inform me how to upload pics with writing anything in forum.

Thanks...

English / Learn English - From BBC Learning English (UK)
« on: May 03, 2011, 02:05:12 PM »
Sometime our learning is not very much effective as we read that for getting grade. Even we don't feel interest in the subject. But whether we, the students of English Language and Literature, feel interest in the course related subjects or not, learning English is must. I acknowledge that there is no such a good source like books to learn something. But we, sometimes, need practical examples to learn something.

We spend a lot of time browsing the Internet, especially facebook, youtube, bolgs etc. We can learn English browsing the Internet. BBC is a great source for learning English. There are various sections such as , Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation, General and Business English etc. The most interesting section that I have found is pronunciation. There are some videos which show how to pronounce English sounds; there are many examples which will make anyone clear about the differences between the sounds. (BBC pronunciation tips http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/grammar/pron/).

Vocabulary is another interesting section from where we can learn new vocabularies. Moreover, we can get the meanings of difficult words while reading a report. Follow the link for words in news-
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/language/wordsinthenews/2011/04/110429_witn_shakespeare_page.shtml

Anyone who is interested can attend on-line quizzes. Don't get afraid…..no one is going to reduce your grade!!! Just update yourself and test your English skill……..

English / Seminar on Translation Studies in Bangladesh
« on: April 29, 2011, 01:30:00 AM »
I, firstly, would like to thank all the faculty members of English Department for arranging such an event. It was really an educative event where, I hope, the students of our department have got a good knowledge about translation studies. I was moved by the speeches of Professor Dr. Fakrul Alam (Dhaka University) and another Professor from Jahangirnagar University . This type of seminar can help the students to enrich their knowledge as well as share their views with the intellectual person like Professor Dr. Fakrul Alam. Moreover, we enjoyed the immaculate performance (Poem recitation) of our respected Ms. Nahid Kaiser Madam.

I hope that our department will arrange this type seminar in future.

Positive Bangladesh / Collection and Distribution of Warm Clothes'2010
« on: November 28, 2010, 12:00:53 AM »
In our country, among the total population, 50% people are living under the poverty level. According to UNDP, those who are living under the poverty level, among them 40% people don't have any winter clothes and 30% people have only one cloth each.  Consequently, hundreds of people die every year especially on the North area of our country. Those who die mostly are the poor children and old people. Someone even chooses the path of suicide as he or she can't bear the extreme sufferings. SAME THING IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN THIS YEAR!!!

We should do something for the needy people from our sense of responsibility.

English / Human Fury and Damnation - Movie Review

MOBY DICK- MOVIE REVIEW

Human Fury and Damnation

Moby Dick, an English movie, based on the eminent classic writer Herman Melville’s novel the “Moby Dick- a white whale”, is directed and produced by John Huston. This movie is an account of the dreadful sea voyage of the captain, Ihab.

The storyline of the movie is narrated by one of the crew of the Pequod (a ship) Ishmael (Richard Basehart).  The movie unfolds with the speech of Ishmael -“Call me Ishmael”. He has a fascination for the sea who signs up for service abroad the Pequod with a newly made friend Queequeg (Friedrich Von Ledebur). The ship is sailed out of New Bedford. The captain of the ship is Ihab (Gregory Peck), who has no but one aim in his life that is to kill the moby dick (a white whale). Because, the moby dick disfigured him (caused the loss of his leg) in his previous sea voyage. Now, he is so desperate for revenging on the moby dick. Captain Ihab, the solid iron figure, commands his crew that they only have to look for the white whale and declares who will see the white whale first; he will get a Spanish gold coin as a reward. His declaration makes the crew more excited to find the white whale. Afterward, he hears about the moby dick from the captain of another ship and orders his crew to sail their ship towards the pacific, where mody dick is sighted. His shipmate, Starbuck (Leo Genn) warns him not to go there as the moby dick is enormous in size, which has destroyed many ships and crew before. But, Ihab agony leads him to go there. He says “There is one God over the earth and there is one captain over the Pequod”. Henceforth, they are afflicted by topical heat and violent storms going towards the pacific. Finally, captain Ihab sights the moby dick. He sails a small boat and orders other crew to sail some small boats on the sea. They run after the white whale and harpoon it but the gigantic whale destroys the boats killing the crew including Ihab. Eventually, Ishmael is saved by the grace of almighty, who actually tells the story. Finally, captain Ihab’s non-stop fury causes his fellow shipmates death and culminates into his damnation.

Dear viewers, the culmination of Ihab’s fury conveys an important message to us– our fury and ambitious nature for revenging causes ours’ plight. John Huston has masterfully cinematized this movie. This movie is full of adventures and suspense which will take any audience away from his time!!!

English / Some reference books are needed
« on: October 01, 2010, 11:48:08 PM »
I want to work on the novel "The Sun Also Rises" by Ernest Hemingway. I have tried to find out any reference books on it. But there is no reference book on this novel in our library even in the market. I need some reference books.

15

Ernest Hemingway, the noted literary figure in the American Literature, is best known for his profound literary work The Old Man and the Sea. He has portrayed the old man Santiago’s relentless struggle to catch and save the marlin.

We come to know that the old man, Santiago, has a great skill in fishing. But, most of the people around him start to say that he has a bad back because he has passed last eight four days with having any fish. Mark Twain once said “All you need is ignorance and confidence and the success is sure”. Santiago probably believes in the sentence and works according to it.

This novella is not merely the story about the old man’s fishing in the sea rather than Ernest Hemingway has portrayed our life through this metaphorical work. The ‘sea’ and the ‘marlin’ represents human’s ‘life’ and ‘aim’. The old man, Santiago, an individual human being, struggles in his life to achieve his goal. To fish the marlin, he has to endure severe pain. But his self-inspiration is truly admirable. When the blood blows from his hand to catch the fish he scolds his hands and inspires his hands after eating a small tuna. He finally kills the fish (after 3days battle) and heads towards his home. During fishing the marlin, he has been afflicted by the rain, the sea waves, the head of the sun etc. He has also to wrestles to save the fish from the sharks. But he can’t save the fish. He feels upsets for the fish. But he acknowledges- “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. Although, the old man can’t save the fish but his stoic endurance and continuous struggle have brought him respect.

Ernest Hemingway shows to us that human life is a state for struggling. A man has to face many problems in the journey of the life. The meaning of life justifies through struggle. One must take the wounds as grace like Santiago.

There are two philosophies of leading life; one is to struggle and test the life (Stoicism), and another is to take the pleasure as the most important part of life (Hedonism). Ernest Hemingway actually shows that one must struggle to reach his destiny. I strongly believe that the meaning of life underlies through struggle.
