Data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) show that Bangladesh’s merchandise exports grew by 8.07% to $41.72 billion year-on-year in the July-March period of this fiscal year

Bangladesh's non-RMG export to the global market has been squeezed by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and high inflation, according to industry leaders.

Exporters have said that they are facing challenges in adjusting their additional production costs due to gas and electricity price hikes within the country. Additionally, the price hikes of locally sourced raw materials have affected businesses dealing in jute products and frozen and live fish, they added.

Data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) show that Bangladesh's merchandise exports grew by 8.07% to $41.72 billion year-on-year in the July-March period of this fiscal year. However, this growth was primarily due to the readymade garments sector, which saw a 12.17% growth to $38.25 billion in the period.

In March this year, the country's overall exports fell by 2.41% to $4.76 billion, but it was cushioned by the garments sector, which has been a dependable saviour for Bangladesh's export economy.

All major export sectors, apart from the RMG and leather sectors, registered negative growth in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. For instance, exports of home textiles fell by 25.73%, jute and jute goods by 21.23%, agricultural products by 28.31%, and engineering products by 33.65%.

Exports of leather and leather products, however, grew by 2.56%.

Mohammad Ali Khokon, president of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), told The Business Standard that the global economic downturn has led to the closure of a number of home textile stores in major markets, which has affected Bangladesh's exports.

He added that home textiles are the third option of consumers in apparel, and none of them will buy new ones until the economic situation improves.

Joseph Chowdhury, business head of Momtex Expo Ltd, observed that war-driven high inflation has impacted business, as people are not buying home textiles.

Due to the lack of customers, many stores in the EU have already closed, and Bangladesh is not getting orders as it did in previous years, making 2023 a very tough year, he said.

Meanwhile, the recent gas price hike has increased cost for the firm by 5%-8%, and during low orders in the market, it is unable to offer any customers an increase in price.

Pakistan is one of the major competitors in the home textiles segment, with an advantage of offering about 30% less than Bangladeshi exporters due to currency devaluation, Joseph noted, adding that Bangladeshi exporters are losing their competitiveness due to the recent gas price hikes.

Momtex Expo Ltd has seen about a 50% sales drop in the last couple of months, with a capacity of producing three million meters a month, he told TBS.

A leading home textile exporter, who wished to remain anonymous, said that customers have lost their purchasing power due to energy price hikes in the global market.

The market might not improve until the energy market stabilises, he observed, adding, "None of the customers will break free of fear until the global inflation situation improves."

Jute and jute goods

The once prosperous jute industry, which crossed the billion-dollar export mark in the last fiscal year, has experienced a significant decline in earnings, with a slip of over 21% year-on-year in the first three quarters of this fiscal year.

Sheikh Nasir Uddin, chairman of Akij Group - one of the largest jute goods exporters in the country - has attributed this drop in earnings to the high prices of raw materials.

Further explaining the situation, he said last year a group of illegal stockists drove up the prices of raw jute, which usually ranged between Tk2,000 to Tk2,500, to as high as Tk6,000 per maund (one maund is about 37kg).

As a result of this syndication, a number of importers in Turkey have switched to using recycled clothing yarn instead of jute yarn for the lower parts of their carpets, which has affected the Bangladeshi jute yarn market since Turkey is its largest market.

However, Sheikh Nasir Uddin stated that negotiations are still ongoing to improve business, and exporters are working on diversifying their products and markets.

Although there has been some growth in the business in March this year, he emphasised the need for a stable price of raw materials to do business in the international market.

Leather and leather products

Despite some growth in the leather goods and footwear sector in the first nine months, leather exports experienced negative growth of about 20%, while leather footwear dropped by about 1%. However, the sector shortfall has been recovered by the growth of leather products exports year on year.

Syed Nasim Manzur, president of the Leathergoods and Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association of Bangladesh, stated that the sector was in good shape until December 2022, as orders were booked five to six months before, and in some cases, even earlier.

However, since January, the sector could predict that exports might decrease due to non-essential purchases and high inflation caused by the Ukraine war. The Covid pandemic has also changed customers' buying patterns, as they are spending more in restaurants and less on products.

The US market, which imported a record amount of leather goods from Bangladesh last year, has huge inventory but is witnessing a drop in sales due to high inflation and interest rates. As a result, many retailers are waiting to clear their inventory before placing new orders, said Syed Nasim Manzur, who is also managing director of Apex Footwear Ltd.

Despite economic uncertainty, the Japanese market has been performing well, he said.

According to chartr.co, Nike and Adidas have mountains of unsold inventory. Of them, Nike reported that sales were up 14% to $12.3 billion in its most recent quarter, but the company continues to carry a near-record level of stock, with inventory up 53% in the last 3 years.

‍Adidas is having a harder time with its own inventory issues, warning that 2023 could see the German company's first annual loss in three decades.

By next June, the sector may enjoy slight positive corrections in business growth, said Nasim Manzur. But he acknowledged that the sector is currently facing a "perfect storm" of challenges.

Ibnul Wara, managing director of Austan Ltd, a Dhaka EPZ-based export-oriented finished leather manufacturer, suggested that the sector could improve by ensuring environmental compliance in tanneries and attracting foreign investment.

In the long run, he also recommended reducing dependence on the European market to minimize risks. Ibnul Wara also said the Japanese, Australian and Canadian markets have huge potential to grow.

Frozen and live fish export

Shrimps are the major export earner in the frozen and live fish category but due to global inflation, their exports saw about a 25% YoY drop in the first three quarters of the current fiscal year.

Kazi Belayet Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association, said shrimps are always treated as luxury food items. Due to high inflation buyers are not placing new orders, and in some cases, are deferring their orders.

This business may not return to a positive trend until the economic situation improves, he added.

The industry did not face such hard times even during Covid, said Kazi Belayet Hossain, who serves as managing director of Sobi Fish Processing Industries Ltd.

Exporters mentioned that shrimp cultivation has dropped over the years and the increasing buying capacity of local people is also squeezing raw materials sourcing.

Agricultural products

Agro-product exports crossed the $1 billion mark in both FY21 and FY22, thanks to increased consumption of processed food with consumers holed up at home globally during the pandemic.

But in the first three quarters of the current fiscal year, the sector's export receipts fell by over 28% to $687.09 million, which was $958.45 million in the same period of the last fiscal.

Kamruzzaman Kamal, director of PRAN-RFL Group, said, "As a company, we are in a good position though the overall industry is not in good shape and growth is not as per our expectations."

Bangladeshi agro-product exporters are losing their competitiveness in the global market due to some internal factors, he added. Besides, amid the global economic slowdown, buyers are more cautious about spending, which has also impacted their consumption, he concluded.

Bicycles

Bicycle exports fell by 9.13% to $111.14 million in the first three quarters of the current fiscal year from $122.31 million in the corresponding period a year ago.

"Bicycle export business is going through a worse phase even when compared to the Covid times," said Md Lutful Bari, operations director of Meghna Group – the bicycle export leader in the country.

Gas supply shortage and its price hike also dealt a blow to bicycle exporters, added Bari, who is also the secretary general of the Bangladesh Bicycle and Parts Manufacturer and Exporters Association. 06 April, 2023

We've seen this movie before: Zombies stalk the land, threatening to infect those around them and ... impairing economic growth. Maybe that doesn't seem as scary as The Walking Dead, but the threat of zombies — companies that struggle to service their debt or banks that are technically insolvent but avoid collapse — is real. Their rise has been tied to the era of easy money that the US Federal Reserve and other central banks ended last year when they rapidly raised interest rates. Now, tighter money threatens to create new zombies and kill off others that had been barely holding on. Central bankers face tricky balancing acts as they try to cool inflation without swelling the ranks of the financially undead.

1. What are financial zombies?

A zombie firm typically refers to a company that doesn't earn enough to pay its interest costs for an extended period. In financial statements, that's reflected as an interest coverage ratio of under one. Ricardo Caballero, an economics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, used the word in 2008 to analyze Japan's lost decade of the 1990s. Then it gained more popularity in the US during and after the global financial crisis. But the term was originally coined by Edward Kane of Boston College in the late 1980s to describe banks that were allowed to stay in business even though they were essentially wiped out by commercial-mortgage losses. Whether it's a company zombie or a bank zombie, the basic concept is the same: They are allowed to keep walking in the hope that life may return to them someday.

2. How many are there?

Estimates vary, but around 15% of listed firms in developed nations were considered zombies as of 2017, up from about 4% in the late 1980s, according to a study by the Bank for International Settlements. A Goldman Sachs analysis in 2022 estimated that some 13% of firms based in the US could be zombies. A Fed study showed the number of zombies among listed firms hovering around 10% between 2000 and 2020, with higher numbers during recessions. Companies like AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and Carnival Corp. have been labeled zombies in the US in recent years. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development estimated that in the years before the pandemic, roughly 5% of companies there could be classified as zombie firms. Since 2016, China has pushed supply-side reforms that have sought to cull the number of zombies, especially in the state sector, where they were most prevalent in the steel and coal industries.

3. What caused the rise of zombies?
Zombies survive on easy money. They found fertile conditions in the past decade as monetary authorities eased policy to stimulate economies. During the Covid pandemic in particular, many central banks cut their key interest rates to record lows while some also bolstered purchases of bonds to drive down market yields. The effect of that aid is debated — a 2021 note from the Federal Reserve said that zombie companies didn't benefit from particularly favorable rates during the pandemic. Others say that zombies were lurking but weren't visible until rates shot up.

4. Are there more zombies now?
More of them are evident. A rise in debt-service costs can tip a vulnerable company into zombie status, and interest rates have been going up around the world. For example, some 36% of South Korea's publicly traded developers struggled to service debt fully last year, up from 29% in 2021, according to the Bank of Korea. There are fewer of them in nations where borrowing costs remain very low. About 13% of Japan's companies were considered zombies in the year that ended in March 2022, according to research firm Teikoku Databank Ltd. While that's up from 9.9% two years ago, the ratio remains relatively low in Japan, which has been the exception to many central bank trends: The Bank of Japan's aggressive monetary easing has kept borrowing costs down.

5. What about banks?

The market turmoil that followed the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in March reflected fears that the new regime of higher interest rates had weakened not only corporate borrowers but also important parts of the banking sector. For SVB and Signature Bank, which was also shut by regulators, their problems stemmed from large losses they had taken on long-term bond holdings whose market value had dropped as interest rates rose. It's a phenomenon regulators said had produced $620 billion in losses across the US banking sector at the end of 2022. Smaller banks also faced rising costs as money market funds, with their higher yields, took deposits from banks. That left regional banks, in particular, with a choice of either losing billions in funding or raising their own deposit rates and squeezing their profit.

6. How do zombie companies weigh on economies?

Trapped in a cycle of stagnant growth and productivity, zombie companies suck up capital that could otherwise be used by innovative companies to invest in new products and services. For example, business investment by an ordinary company would have been 2% higher in 2013 on average if the share of zombies had remained unchanged from its 2007 level, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. It's not just investment that zombie companies undermine. Their sudden collapse could also cause job losses, reduced consumption and tighter lending, which could then push other firms closer to bankruptcy.

7. What can be done about zombies?

While the economically efficient thing to do with zombies is to put them out of their misery, the long persistence of the phenomenon is a sign of how hard shutting them down can be. The BIS study warns that there's an 85% chance of zombie companies staying zombies in the following year, up from about 70% in the late 1980s. Part of the problem is that the kind of economic downturn that brings zombies to light is exactly the kind of situation in which governments may want to limit bankruptcies or bank closings.

Macroeconomics / Inflation may go up in March: Mannan
« on: March 25, 2023, 02:47:08 PM »
Planning Minister MA Mannan on Tuesday said the country’s overall inflation may rise in March due to the dry season, and consumers stocking up on essential commodities ahead of Ramadan, which could strain supply on the market.

Mannan made the remark while speaking to reporters after the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting, held in the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Tuesday.

He added, “We fear that inflation may increase in the country as consumers are trying to stockpile essential commodities ahead of Ramadan. Inflation may also go up due the dry season in the country. It may however decline from April.

“Inflation may come down from the month of Baishakh if there is a bumper Boro harvest,” he said, adding that the harvest may be hampered if there is excessive rainfall during this time.

The minister said that the government is focusing more on the supply side to keep the market stable.

“In our country, consumers usually buy essential commodities such as edible oil, onion, and sugar in excess before the holy month of Ramadan. So the commodity prices go up during the period.”

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the country’s overall inflation was recorded at 8.78 per cent in February, compared to 8.57 per cent in January.

The food inflation in rural areas was at 8.19 per cent last month, up from 7.92 per cent in January. In urban areas, it was at 7.98 per cent last month, up from 7.41 per cent in January.

The non-food inflation in rural areas also decreased to 9.98 per cent in February from January’s 10.12 per cent. However, in urban areas, it also rose to 9.61 per cent in February from 9.48 per cent in January.

Bangladesh's inflation reached 9.5 per cent in August due to rising commodity prices and record hike in fuel prices. But, it declined to 9.1 per cent in September this FY. According to the national budget, Bangladesh had set the inflation target at 5.6 per cent for FY2022-23.

The BBS inflation data, however, did not fully reflect the ongoing situation in kitchen markets as essential commodity prices are still soaring across the country ahead of Ramadan.

Compared to the last two months, essential commodity prices have increased in the both wholesale and retail markets. Notably, the prices of broiler chicken, beef, and sugar have increased in the city’s kitchen markets.

Broiler chicken was being sold at Tk 260-290 per kg this week, which was Tk 160-170 per kg in the last week of January. Beef was sold at Tk 720-800 per kg this week, which was Tk 700 per kg in January.

Meanwhile, sugar was being sold at Tk 120 per kg this week, which was Tk 90 two months ago.

Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) President Ghulam Rahman recently said the inflation situation has significantly worsened, and it has already impacted negatively the lives of low and middle-income people across the country.

The planning minister said the economy is now more stable compared to the last two months. “Our reserves, exports, and remittance are on the right track,” he added.               21 Mar 2023

Economics in Business / Govt creates ‘land bank’ for economic zones
« on: September 20, 2018, 12:54:52 PM »
Principal Coordinator on SDG Affairs in Prime Minister’s Office Md Abul Kalam Azad said the government has created a ‘land bank’ of one lakh acres for establishing economic zones, especially in the south belt, of which 35,000 acres have already been acquired and handed over to BEZA.

“The government has done a mapping in line with the goals and targets of SDGs and the ministries concerned have been given the tasks of implementation,” he added.

Azad was speaking as chief guest at a round table discussion on “Potential Roles and Challenges of Private Sector to Achieve Sustainable Development Goals” organized by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) at DCCI auditorium on Thursday, said a media release.

Emphasizing the need of resource mobilization for financing issues and skill development, he urged the private sector to invest in the economic zones and said: “The government will facilitate the private sector by providing electricity and gas”.

The Principle coordinator also asserted that the present GDP growth has been achieved because of the private sector.
Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) President Barrister Nihad Kabir and Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Mahbubul Alam were present as special guests while former DCCI President Asif Ibrahim moderated the open discussion session.

Senior Research Fello of BIDS Dr. Nazneen Ahmed presented a keynote paper. She highlighted how the goals of SDG 8, 9 and 12 are directly linked with the private sector.

“To explore our own market, we have to increase our investment,” said Nazneen, adding, “In order to increase investment, corporate tax rate should be reduced along with establishment of a long-term regulatory framework.”

Nihad Kabir said a participatory role both from public and private sector will expedite the work to achieve SDGs. She laid emphasis on technology and vocational education.

Mentioning that financing for SDG will not be a problem as Bangladesh may try to get the Green Climate Fund, the MCCI president underscored the importance of a transparent long-term regulatory framework.

To attain SDGs, strong institutional mechanism involving all stakeholders including public representatives, government, private sector, civil society, knowledge community and development partners are required, opined Mahbubul Alam.

In the welcome address, DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan said under SDGs, Bangladesh requires intense focus on employment generation for institutional capacity building.

He also pointed out the challenges that the private sector are facing such as want of affordable and reliable energy sources, inadequate technology, expensive compliance and preparedness measures, climate change impacts, outdated infrastructure facilities, high cost of doing business, weak regulatory framework including business process and lack of institutional capacity.

“We need policy continuity, consistency and cohesiveness for more engagement of private sector in attaining SDGs,” he added.
CDP Senior Research Fellow Towfiqul Islam Khan, Director of Multimode Group Tafsir Mohammed Awal and PRI Research Director Dr. MA Razzaque were present as panel discussants.
