Title: How to be a popular teacher
Post by: shibli on October 01, 2010, 08:10:15 PM
1. Have a unique character. This normally only works if you're new, but if you stick to a certain personality that may be mean/angry etc. you will gain respect for it, as long as you're not stupid or act like a snob.

      2
Ask for a class opinion. Have a discussion with your class about what could make class more interesting. The same things normally come up like listening to music. Listen to their suggestions and compromise.
   3.

Be flexible. Listen to your students! You'll be amazed how much they'll respect you when you do. But don't let the kids rule you. Of course they'll want to take advantage of these fun things, but you still want to maintain control. Do not be overly strict.
   4.

Make the work you give to students fun. Any subject can be interesting if done through a game or puzzles. Never waste the students' time. Make sure that your assignment is actually going to teach them something or help them apply class principles in real life. Busy work is a hassle for everyone. Moreover, they will see it it as pointless for you teach something not relevant to the subject you are teaching.
   5.

Stay in fashion. While still dressing appropriately for your age and maintaining decorum, keep in touch with fashion to help the students relate to you more. Discussing what's new in trends with your students will give you a better feel for where they're coming from as well.

      6
Keep in mind that your students cannot remember everything. Make sure to remind them about things when necessary.

7.
Know how to console your students. Be someone who can give advice on solving the students' dilemma. Give respect, and never humiliate a student in front of the class unless the context is a very clear joke. Remember, humiliation offends far more people than just the student in question.
   8.
      8
Show your passion! Stay interested and involved with your work, remember why you became a teacher in the beginning. Your love of a subject and excitement for it can influence your pupils greatly.
   9.
      9
Earn their respect with discipline. It will be difficult for them to respect you if you cannot keep a handle on your classroom. Once you have shown them you can handle the group, it will be easier to be relaxed and fun with them. Don't be the 'cool' teacher that lets their students get away with murder!

Tips

    * DO NOT be hypocritical. If you want your students to tuck their shirts in, make sure you do so too.

    * Grade fairly. Make sure that not all of your assignments are subjective. For those that are, take precautions such as reading the first page with the name last, or having students write their names on the backs of the papers so you don't know who it is before you grade.

* Don't be someone you're not. People can see right through you. It is more likely to get you made fun of than popular with students.

  * If you don't know the answer, don't be afraid to say "I don't know." Students often know when the teacher doesn't have a clue and that leads to a dramatic loss of respect. (And then don't take the question as a challenge to your knowledge. Take it as a good question from a good, curious student.)

  * If you have a student who has read something that you haven't or has an idea you don't know how to respond to, respect their opinion and appreciate that someone has taken the time to do some extra research. If you don't know how to respond, say things like "I've never heard that before. I will have to do some research." It will actually make the student feel that his opinions are valid.

  * Don't naively believe that everyone believes the same things you do (especially when it comes to religion), even if you live in a region where most people believe the same things.

  * Stop complaining how much you have to grade. You were the one who assigned it. If you don't want to grade it, don't assign it!

* Don't check out, especially if you teach high school. Letting movies teach your class for you isn't cool; it is lazy and shows the students you don't care.

   * Care about what you teach! If you don't like it, your students won't either. If you expect your students to get good grades and put forth an effort, you have to as well.

  * Remember that education is more than teaching students what to think, it is also teaching them how to think. Encourage diverse opinions (even if those opinions differ from your own).

   * Don't complain about your job, salary, or that you have to do conferences - it is part of your job, you picked it. If a business man told his customers how much he hated his job, would they buy his product? No! It also makes students feel bad about themselves if you hate being there with them.

I believe being a good teacher is much more important than simply being a popular teacher. Isn't it easy to get cheap popularity?

A good teacher can be a popular teacher but a popular teacher may not be a good teacher...i can gain cheap popularity in the following ways:

1. by giving good grades

2. by teaching short syllabus

3. by taking few number of quizzes which many students want

4. by giving less pressure to the students

5. by making easy questions

On the other hand, i can be a good teacher by being reflective in teaching.

I personally know of a very good teacher, who is a former colleague of mine and now is studying MBA in the USA, had been unpopular during his time at DIU, is just because he put pressure on students so that students could learn in the proper and meaningful way and get good jobs after graduation...but they misjudged him. He was an excellent teacher as i saw him always thinking about his students and teaching passionately and checking assignments and answer scripts objectively..

Title: Difference between a teacher and an administrator!!!
Post by: shibli on October 04, 2010, 11:40:09 AM
The responsibilities of a general teacher are well defined which are as follows:

1. Instructing students
2. Checking scripts
3. Preparing questions
4. Invigilating in the exam hall
5. Counseling and guiding students
6. Managing class rooms
7. Managing students
8. Doing research work

But the tasks of a person in the administration are multifarious.....the responsibilities may change from time to time....

So, it's difficult to become both a good teacher and a good administrator.

Over to all for comments.....

i think very very few people can be good teachers and administrators as well......though i am student, i think working in administration is very hasslesome though everywhere there is hassle....

An administrator has to attend meetings and organize programs. At the same time if he or she takes class, sometimes, he/she cannot maintain quality. Quality needs attention, preparation and devotion.

Life is a continuous chain of experiences. These experiences are both good and bad but both help us live a more educated and productive life. Experience is a key ingredient to success on the job. Although balancing teaching and administrative work among other things can create a large workload, the reward in the end can be huge.
Title: Re: How to be a popular teacher

i agree, sir. but this is some kind of jack of all trades but master of none.....being good in both the fields is exceptionally possible for only few people. I think that teaching will hamper if there is pressure in administrative works.....people can make balance but to be good in both fields without sacrificing the other is impossible, i think. It is just like maintaining two wives....lolz...

Most the cases we see all the heads of the department and top administrative positions of any private or public Universities selected from the good  and reputed teacher. Those positions require extensive skills in administrative job.

So I think a good academician can be a good administrator , lots of examples are available around us with little execeptions.

Again when a teacher gain cheap popularity by giving extra privilege to students, he/she never sustain for the long run.
So only a good teacher will be the popular teacher for the long run.

Dear Sumon,

Yes, there are many examples of both good academicians and administrators, but  many times being involved in both also affects one or the other.....for example, i know some good academicians taking three/two quizzes at the same time on the same day and not being able to check the answer scripts due to administrative pressure. How can a person ensure quality when he or she is always busy with something other than teaching? During our time in Dhaka University, many teachers went abroad and finished our classes hurriedly without completing the whole syllabus properly after coming back. So, it totally depends on the load one carries and it certainly hampers the quality and productivity unless the load of the one side is less than the other, i suppose.

Warmly,

another  I will say How to earn the respect of your students?

The basic first step to earn their respect is to simply be nice to them. Now, this doesn't mean you should let them walk all over you, but it does mean you shouldn't walk all over them either. You will need to attain some sort of balance. First of all, if you are having a bad day (as we all do from time to time), the best would be to tell your class, so that they can be careful to not aggravate you. That of course doesn't mean someone won't annoy you, but if this happens then at least an angry outburst from you won't be completely unexpected, and since you announced it to begin with, the others should be more likely to accept your apology if you took it out on someone undeserving. Also accept that some of your students may be having a bad day as well, and treat them the way you would want to be treated in such a situation.

Encourage your students to call you by your first name instead of Mr/Mrs etc. This creates a more friendly atmosphere and helps to do away with the idea that you're an authority figure over them, and will encourage them to be more open and friendly with you.

Try to get to know your students individually. Get to know what they like/dislike, their ideas and needs. This can be a lot of work, especially if you teach at a large school, but if you can grade all that homework and keep track of who the good/bad kids are, you should be able to remember a few personal traits as well.

Be honest with your students. Especially when they ask things like "When will I ever use this in real life?". One thing a lot of kids hate is when teachers tell them that it's important to know things like the formula for a parabola. Most people will never use that knowledge again.

Grade things on time. Just as you would expect your students to hand projects in on time, you should set the example by being timely yourself. If you don't grade things on time, then be sure to give your students the same leeway as well.

Don't censor yourself too much. Most students actually like a teacher that swears a little every now and then. On the other hand, don't attempt slang unless you're totally comfortable with it.

Stand up for your students. If you see them being pushed around or bullied by other students or teachers, try to end the conflict, or at least tell the attacker to calm down.

Also, for male teachers: girls occasionally have something called a "period". It means they have to use the restroom more frequently, and females greatly appreciate the allowance of restroom use to "fix themselves up".

Once you've earned the respect of your students, be sure to keep it! Make jokes, fool around a bit when the time is right - try to keep it casual.

best fo luck

last one ,How to make your classes interesting?

Whenever possible, give your students choices as to what they would like to do and how they want to do it. For example, after covering a section of work, ask them if they'd rather write a test, have a discussion or do a worksheet on it. You could even divide the class according to what they'd rather do, and let them do that. This also counts for projects and papers. Try to avoid giving the whole class the same topic, unless you have to. Even then try to give them as much leeway as possible.

Try to come up with other ways of presenting things instead of sticking to lesson plans or text books. If you just stand in the front and lecture the whole time, the chances of anyone paying attention are slim.

Also, don't be too eager to offer help to a student, but do make it clear that if they want help they should ask. Some kids like to figure things out for themselves, while others prefer to be told how to do it.

Don't place too much emphasis on keeping your class quiet. Some students will want to help each other or work together, this is a good thing. In fact, don't be the only one talking. Encourage discussion. Let your students interrupt you from time to time to discuss a point. Don't worry if you end up straying off the point a little, just try to keep track of where you were and don't let it go too far. Allow students to move around and sit next to a friend, as long as they do all their work and don't cause major disruptions.

Don't worry about drinks or food in class as long as the class stays clean. If someone makes a mess, they should clean it up themselves right then and there.

Some people work faster and better if there is music. Since not everyone has the same taste in music, allow your students to listen to whatever they like with headphones on, as long as it's not too loud.

Let students start their homework in your class. This way it becomes more like classwork, and whatever isn't finished by the end of class becomes homework. This way whoever works quickly in class doesn't get homework. The other benefit of this is that you are still there to help them, should they need something explained. I have heard so many complaints by kids who sat up all night trying to finish some math homework that they didn't understand how to do in the first place. Also, be lenient - ask your students if they've already received homework for other classes, and how much of it. If they already have a lot, don't give more. The best option would be to just never give any homework, unless the subject in question is something like math where practice is needed.

With regard to assignments, try to work out due dates with other teachers so that students don't get overworked with assignments on different subjects all at the same time.

best of luck

A good teacher is a good learner. He/she learns all through life and gets enriched thereby. As a result a good teacher is a process not a product. I mean it is an endless endeavor rather than something ready-made.Besides, the private university scenario has changed the age-old concept of teacher-student relationship or the time-worn water-tight definition of a good teacher.

Dear Shibli Sir,

Thank you for sharing the honest expression of a teacher you came across. It is true that it is not only important that our students' like the way we are but it is equally important whether we are able to disseminate the knowledge we are supposed to.A teacher is never satisfied if he or she fails to motivate the learners to have interest in the respective topics they teach.

Nice ideas. I think only popularity cannot make a teacher respected. I know some teachers who are very popular but students do not love or respect them. But when a teacher can gain respect of students he/she can be popular as well. For all these a teacher must have self respect.

Popularity can be achieved in different ways like checking exam scripts with more flexibility, leaking out questions, covering less syllabus during the semester or imposing less chapters for the final exam, considering the best  quiz marks etc but all these techniques are unbelievable and unexpected from a teacher since teaching is a dignified profession. So, the question is why the curiosity for popularity emerges?

Is it because of surviving in the teaching career for the long run? That’s why teachers should learn how to be popular in front of their students. If the answer is ‘yes’ then it is shameful for the society because teachers should possess the freedom to teach his students with his own methods or techniques with utmost honesty, not to gain popularity. So, become a popular teacher is not accepted? If the answer is ‘no’ then a teacher should try to be popular.

Thus, if becoming popular teacher is not mandatory by the organization or society then also teachers should try to be popular for the shake of the students.  The main responsibility of a teacher is to motivate the students so that they can start learning by their own. As we know that a teacher can not teach a student until student wishes to learn. Motivation is the only remedy to inspire the students to learn and here popularity is a key to motivate the students.

My little experience suggests me the following two techniques to be a real popular teacher for the long run. If teachers possess these two qualities and on a regular basis practice these than students can be motivated.
1.   Teachers’ genuine wishes for the students’ success.
2.   Updated Knowledge.

Thank you Shibli sir and everyone who commented here for rasing a good topic.

I want to start with one of speeches of my sagacious father----that is  "Learning stops when anyone feels proud about his/her learning". My father, Ajoy Karmaker, used to say "A Tree which is full of fruits can not move too much with the pressure of the air and it has a weight". He also said,"He/She is a good teacher who can be a good student forever".

It signifies that 'Learning is an on going process'.

This means when a teacher takes pride on his/her learning, that learning stops then. But if the teacher does not have pride about his/her learning and learn from the total universe even from a subtle ant,s/he can be a good teacher.

In one sentence it can be said that 'Whose learning never can be hindered or stopped,s/he can be a good teacher'

Learning is one of the features of a good teacher. But there are a lot of another features of a good teacher which can be discussed after a period of time.
