Title: Life-skill course
Post by: shibli on July 02, 2009, 07:44:35 PM
Dear Sir
This is my personal opinion. A "life-skill" course can be introduced for the last semester students of all departments of DIU to make them well equipped with the interview tips and techniques, job search process and necessary English language skills in order to brush up their communication skills, which they already learnt in English and Business Communication courses.

In addition, time management, stress management, corporate behaviour and other related topis can be incorporated in the course.

What do you  think?

Best regards

Title: Mind Map :: Exclusive way to make link with Ideas & thoughts
Post by: azam_802 on July 09, 2009, 01:06:05 AM
Mind Map

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.

The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories.

By using mind map you can easily note down any ideas, thoughts. You will be able to keep a lot of ideas, plan, thoughts by mind map.

So we should use mind map.

Title: Do It Now!
Post by: kazi shahin on July 09, 2009, 02:11:34 AM
                                                             Do It Now!

In a class I teach for adults, I recently did the "unpardonable." I gave the class homework! The assignment was to "go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven't shared those words with for a long time."
Now that doesn't sound like a very tough assignment, until you stop to realized that most of the men in that group were over 35 and were raised in the generation of men that were taught that expressing emotions is not "macho." Showing feelings or crying (heaven forbid!) was just not done. So this was a very threatening assignment for some.
At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand. He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken.
As he unfolded out of his chair (all 6'2" of him), he began by saying, "Dennis, I was quite angry with you last week when you gave us this assignment. I didn't feel that I had anyone to say those words to, and besides, who were you to tell me to do something that personal? But as I began driving home my conscience started talking to me. It was telling me that I knew exactly who I needed to say 'I love you' to. You see, five years ago, my father and I had a vicious disagreement and really never resolved it since that time. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other. So, last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him.
"It's weird, but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.
"When I got home, I rushed into the house to tell my wife what I was going to do. She was already in bed, but I woke her up anyway. When I told her, she didn't just get out of bed, she catapulted out and hugged my, and for the first time in our married life she saw me cry. We stayed up half the night drinking coffee and talking. It was great!
"The next morning I was up bright and early. I was so excited I could hardly sleep. I got to the office early and accomplished more in two hours than I had the whole day before.
"At 9:00 I called my dad to see if could come over after work. When he answered the phone, I just said, 'Dad, can I come over after work tonight? I have something to tell you.' My dad responded with a grumpy, 'Now what?' I assured him it wouldn't take long, so he finally agreed.
"At 5:30, I was at my parents' house ringing the doorbell, praying that Dad would answer the door. I was afraid if Mom answered that I would chicken out and tell her instead. But as luck would have it, Dad did answer the door.
"I didn't waste any time - I took one step in the door and said, 'Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.'
"It was as if a transformation came over my dad. Before my eyes his face softened, the wrinkles seemed to disappear and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said, 'I love you too, son, but I've never been able to say it.'
"It was such a precious moment I didn't want to move. Mom walked by with tears in her eyes. I just waved and blew her a kiss. Dad and I hugged for a moment longer and then I left. I hadn't felt that great in a long time.
"But that's not even my point. Two days after that visit, my dad, who had heart problems, but didn't tell me, had an attack and ended up in the hospital, unconscious. I don't know if he'll make it.
"So my message to all of you in this is: Don't wait to do the things you know need to be done. What if I had waited to tell my dad - maybe I will never get the chance again! Take the time to do what you need to do and do it now!"

Dear Kulsum,

Thank you for your interest. The next round of workshops will InshaAllah be planned for Fall 2009.

However, I can hold one session of the workshop "YOU" for your own students in your class-time this semester. There are three parts:

1. presentation - YOU powerpoint - 20 mins
2. study and overhead presentation of self-development mind map - 12 mins
3. preparation of own self-development mind map - 15 mins
4. presentation or joint development of self-development mind map - 20 mins

Since the whole is more than the time allowed in a class, we can reorganise the activities. Activity 1 and 2 can be managed in a class. The students can then be organised in pairs and asked to combine their mind maps on a poster. They would start the poster in class but finish in their own time. The next class can be used for presentations of the posters. You can manage the next class yourself, or I can come as well.

Pls let me know what you want to do.

-Yousuf.

Dear Sir,

I am so delighted for your proposal.Thank you very much. Yes,we can do it.

My students will love that, and they can do a presentation on it after doing that. I am afraid you might be very busy and i am bothering you. Is it possible to make it on 16th July, thursday at 1:00pm, in 505, Prince Plaza? Or do you have any convenient time?I have classes everyday( sat -thurs)  at 1:00 pm with different batches, you select a day and let me know.

We also can do it for M.A students, their class is from 6:30 to 8:00pm on every Sundays and Wednesdays but number of students are less.

Hope to get your reply. Looking forward to it.

Dear Kulsum,

Unfortunately, on Thursdays, I have three back to back classes. Sunday 19th, would be easier for me. 1pm to 2pm? Room 505 Prince Plaza? I would need both a multimedia projector and an overhead projector. Can these be organised? Pls let me know. How many students do you have on Sundays at 1pm? I would need to make some photocopies.

Hope it will be a successful session.

Title: How to strengthen skills n abilities
Post by: shibli on August 04, 2009, 01:18:38 PM
When we decide to develop some skill or ability, especially one that may be new and relatively unfamiliar or uncomfortable, we may benefit from some or all of the five ways top athletes and businesspeople alike strengthen their skills:

1. Visualization
2. Affirmation
3. Education
4. Association
5. Action

VISUALIZATION means forming and holding pictures in our mind. Although it was a radical idea at one time, today it is common knowledge in the sports world that 'mental practice' has almost as much positive impact as physical practice. And, in mental practice, athletes practice perfectly. The imagination is a powerful thing.

If we feel weak in communication skills and dread going to a job interview, we might build a mental movie of us going on a job interview, getting along well with the the interviewer, being calm and relaxed answering the questions brilliantly, and getting hired instantly. Once built and run, our mental movie is stored in memory and can be recalled at will.

Visualization is simply the re-running of this mental movie over and over and over again. Once we understand all that, we can make it work to our benefit.
Title: Re: How to strengthen skills n abilities
Post by: shibli on August 04, 2009, 01:19:24 PM
Affirmation is another means of programming the subconscious mind. Sometimes this is called "self-talk." Most people talk to themselves all the time, constantly, though usually silently. And most such self-talk unfortunately reinforces negative self-image beliefs. Here is an example: Lipi locks her keys in the car. To herself, she says "You idiot!" Then, "i can't seem to remember anything. I'm such a screw-up." Lipi has translated the incident into an indictment (Condemnation), a criticism of herself. It's interesting by the way that most peoples' self-talk is critical. Obviously, we do so many great smart, good and right things everyday, yet, in self-talk, we probably do not praise ourselves for doing those things. But we make a mistake, and we are all over ourselves, like our worst enemy!
Title: Re: How to strengthen skills n abilities
Post by: shibli on August 04, 2009, 01:20:09 PM
The reason that is so harmful is that our subconscious mind accepts cumulative affirmations (the same affirmation heard and said repeatedly) as a “command” then it does everything in its power to fulfill the command. If we tell it that we are clumsy over and over again, it will exert its control over our physical body to literally make us even clumsier.

The good news is that we can tell it something you want to be over and over again, and it will work on making that command a reality. Now this is not “magic.” It won’t do much by itself. But as a reinforcement tool, it can be very powerful. Let’s say you’re always late and have decided to change that about yourself. You have chosen a new direction; you are going to be a punctual person. You affirmations might be:

1.   I am the kind of person who always shows up on time.
2.   Being on time and reliable is very important to me.
3.   I value and respect my own time and others’ time, so I honor my commitments.

ASSOCIATION is the fourth method of strengthening a skill. We talked about association previously too. If we want to get good (or better) at  something, then it just makes sense to be with people who are as good or better than we are at that thing . If I bowl, for example , I’ll never get better if the only people I bowl with are less skilled than I am. To get better as a bowler, I’d bowl with people slightly better than I am, who would challenge me, from whom I could learn by observing.

“A man only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people.”  -Will Rogers Famous American “cowboy humorist”
Title: Re: How to strengthen skills n abilities
Post by: shibli on August 04, 2009, 01:21:15 PM
ACTION is the fifth tool. None of the above tools are of much value unless and until we take action on our thoughts and ideas. And, incidentally, most people drop the ball right here, over and over again, throughout their entire lives. The world is full of people who will tell us about the “great idea” they had, did nothing about, then saw someone else turn it into a successful product or business. Procrastination – the putting off of doing something- is the universal language of the POOR.

If we study successful people in any field, but especially in the business world, in term of careers we’ll quickly notice that they have a tendency to quickly follow decisions with actions. We become what we DO, not what we think or say, and not what others think or say about us.

Title: Just beleive in yourself!
Post by: shibli on September 13, 2010, 11:40:04 AM
Each one of us has feelings of inferiority that we are not good enough. We think that we are not as good as other people, and we feel that we are not good enough to acquire and enjoy the things that we want in life. Very often, we feel that we don’t deserve good things. Even if we do work hard and achieve some worthwhile objectives, we believe that we are not really entitled to our successes, and we often engage in behaviors that sabotage our successes.

The fact is that we deserve every good thing that we are capable of acquiring as the result of the application of our talents. The only real limitation on what we can be and have is our absence of desire. If we want something badly enough, nothing in the world can stop us from getting it, if we are willing to persist long enough and hard enough. Over and over, we find that our beliefs, more than anything else, act as the brakes on our capacities. We have high hopes and dreams and aspirations, but we let doubts creep in and undermine our competence and effectiveness.

We need to develop our beliefs about ourselves to the point where they serve us every day in every way. Men and women who accomplish extraordinary things are just ordinary people who developed themselves mentally to the point where they were able to overcome the obstacles that stood in their way, and they kept on keeping on until the goal was attained.

Psychologist William James of Harvard University said that beliefs create the actual fact. The reason for this is because we always act in a manner consistent with our innermost beliefs and convictions. If you believe yourself capable of accomplishing good things, you will walk and talk and act like it. Your behaviors will actually make your beliefs a reality.

The most harmful beliefs that you can have are what we call self-limiting beliefs. These are beliefs about yourself, most of which are not true; but they hold you back nonetheless. Sometimes you, or others, will say that you cannot achieve certain goals because you did not get enough education. Sometimes you will say that it is because of your gender or race or age or the state of the economy.

Many people blame their parents or their bosses or their families or their current relationships for their failure to make progress in life. Others say that there is no opportunity in their particular area or their particular field. Some complain because they have no money. Others complain because they received poor grades in school or did not go to, or finish, university. Still others say that they have never had a natural talent or ability for a particular field.

The humorist Josh Billings once said, it ain’t what a person knows what hurts him/her. It’s what a person knows what isn’t true. It isn’t the actual truth about yourself and your abilities that hurts you; it’s the things that you consider to be true and that have no basis in truth.

The starting point to change your beliefs is to get up the courage to question them seriously. Question your basic premises. Check your assumptions. Ask yourself, What assumptions am I making about myself or my situation that might not be true?

What Beliefs Might You Have That Are Holding You Back?

Think about them. Remember, most of our self-limiting beliefs have no basis whatsoever in fact. They are based on information and ideas that we have accepted as true, sometimes in early childhood, and to the degree to which we accept them as true, they become true for us.

Your beliefs about reality are based on a thousand influences, many of which began even before you were aware of what was going on. You have beliefs that are deep and beliefs that are shallow. Deep beliefs, with regard to your religion or your political party or your family, or especially yourself, are very hard to change. Shallow beliefs are easily changed. And many of your beliefs are in fact very shallow. They have no substance to them whatsoever. If you challenge them hard enough, you’ll find that they are made of tissue paper. They’ll simply blow away.

You can always tell what your true values and beliefs are by looking at your actions. It isn’t what you say or wish or hope or intend that demonstrates what you really believe. It’s only what you do. It’s only the behaviors that you engage in. It’s only the actions that you choose to undertake. Your values and beliefs are always expressed in your actions and behaviors.

And out of your actions come all of the elements of your life. You are where you are what you are because of what you’ve said and done in the past.

The wonderful thing is this. Each of us is in a state of becoming. Many years ago, a teacher of mine said that each human being is a becomingness. You are constantly evolving toward the fulfillment of your individual possibilities. You can become anything you want by sitting down at the keyboard of your own mental computer and beginning the process of programming in new beliefs.

Once you’ve clearly decided on the person you would like to become, you are on the path toward developing new beliefs. You then discipline yourself each day to behave exactly as you would if you were already that person.

That simple technique, the act as if technique, is extraordinarily powerful. The more you act like the person you want to be, the more consistent your attitude will be with that person’s. Your attitude will have the back-flow effect of affecting your expectations. Positive expectations will have the back-flow effect of building beliefs that are consistent with them. And your beliefs will exert an influence on your values.

You have no limitations on your potential except for those that you believe you have. If you would like to win, but think you can’t, It’s almost certain you won’t. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man, But sooner or later the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can.

People succeed not because they have remarkable characteristics or qualities. The most successful people are quite ordinary, just like you and me. Most of us start off poor and confused. We spend many years getting some sort of direction in our lives. But the turning point comes when we begin to believe that we have within us that divine spark that can lead us onward and upward to the accomplishment of anything that we really want in life.

Dear Sir

Salam. I am not a regular user of the forum, so i missed many occasions and opportunities  to share ideas.

This 'self development workshop' on 'presentation skill, arise a question in my mind ( as I am a teacher of English Department).

Students some time ask me how to do well ?- while facing defense or while facing any project.

I generally guide them being a teacher of language- would you please guide me, being a Teacher of science and engineering- what more should i  emphasize to direct them prperly for their presentation?

There is a principle of success called the power of Association. It basically means that you either hold yourself back or improve yourself based on the people you spend time with the most, because their values, ideas and directions are always influencing your own.

Another proven fact of life is that a strong and stable family environment IS an advantage. If you happen to have a good relationship with your parents or parent, brothers, sisters, and children, and your family life has included helpful values, then you DO have an advantage, there is no doubt about that-----and you should value it and continue it.

But if you do not have this advantage, you will have to work harder on your thinking, your own values and your own decisions...

Here lies the importance of counseling, peer advice and guidance from parents and teachers.

The power of association in human life is huge. If you often associate with loads of friends without focusing on your own specific objectives, you might be carried away by your friends' missions n visions. Successful people know what they are doing and why they r doing so. Your association with them can make your life out of the track...i have seen many of my friends' life happening so.

If a student is poor in a particular course, he or she should associate with those friends who are good at that course to improve himself/herself by taking help or even by spending time n speaking to them. One of my friends always wanted to do BCS cadre job, but none of his friends was interested in BCS. Finally, my friend didn't even appear at BCS exam. We are influnced by the values, ideas and directions of our friends and the people we are associated with. The mission and vision and activities of a Computer Science student will be normally different from a student of Journalism and English. So, if a student is not cautious about choosing his or her friends, he or she might be carried away from his or her own objectives and goals.

We need to know whether we are in the right way or there are problem. Often we misjudge about ourselves, even we are not ready to get advice from others.

So, what would be the solution to judge ourselves? Self evaluation is very important to judge ourselves.

Thank you, CDC to give this opportunity to do our evaluation.

Cheers  CDC  !!!

Thank you, Madam.

@ shahin, we, people, learn by making mistakes, some learn by experience, some try to learn from peer advice while others never learn, they like to go to 'Bel tola' again and again...so, we need programming in mind, first of all, "make habits, then habits will make you" because Dr. Samual Johnson said the chains of the habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken"

As a mater of fact, some of your time should be deliberately and wisely invested in self-improvement. You are the only thing in life over which you have a great deal of control. You are the one asset that can never be lost or stolen. Doesn't it make sense to invest time and money in improving that asset?

Some quotations to follow:

"Laws are never as effective as habits." Adlai Stevenson

"If you create an act, you create a habit.
If you create a habit, you create a character.
If you create character, you create a destiny" Emile Herzog, French Novelist

If we want to know ourselves, we should know the purpose of every work we do..ask ourselves always-what and why??? Co-relate our missions with our vision. A fool has got no purpose of doing anything....

Life become so much grateful because our teachers concern about our life and every step they suggest what is a purpose of life and our destination and they also try to focus that we are the one and we will be the best person in this world when we attention our studies first and balance our extra curricular activities...

Thank you all for being with us....

Students should deliberately and wisely invest some of their time in self-improvement. Thus, they can assess their SWOT(strength, weakness, opportunity and threat) and write them down on e-portfolio. Only having a purpose of every activity in mind won't make them successful unless and until they carry it every moment to fulfill. Their sense of purpose will drive and pursue them to finish their daily responsibilities. So, i think they can write "To do" list everyday or very week in their e-portfolio and accomplish them accordingly. Teachers can check their portfolio every month and advise them as such whether they are on the right track..

Once students have identified their overall purpose/vision, the next step is to turn that purpose into achievable goals, projects, and actions. Once you have your overall context and your purpose worked out, you begin setting goals that would be congruent with that purpose.

Our Chairman sir often says, vision without action is useless...
