Reduce Fat /Weight Loss / 7 solid reasons you're not losing weight
« on: May 27, 2013, 03:11:25 PM »
Trying to lose weight, but cannot? Here are 7reasons that could be getting in the way
Do you keep piling on the kilos, no matter how many diets you try? The problem may have more to do with your general health than with your food. Here are simple solutions that can help you beat the bulge.
Need more sleep
If you don't sleep well, then the body's hormone axis don't work properly. They affect metabolism and eventually lead to weight gain. Doctors say if you aren't sleeping, your body won't be digesting food normally either. Besides, people suffering frominsomnia often snack through the night or drink coffee, which makes the problem worse.
Fix it: Get into a routine by going to bed at regular times and waking up at the same time, even during the weekends. Steer clear of caffeine after 4 pm and try to avoid iPhones or watching TV in your bedroom. Instead, unwind by reading before going to bed.
You're depressed
The problem here is twofold. Most people share an emotional relationship with food. So when depressed, they tend to eat more. However, antidepressants can also stimulate the appetite as, when people feel happier, thanks to the medication, they overeat.
Fix it: It's important not to use an increase in appetite as an excuse to eat the wrong foods. Instead, make sure you always have healthy snacks, such as fruit, nuts and seeds, on hand to stave off those pangs of hunger. If you feel your medication is to blame for your weight gain, then see your GP who might be able to prescribe alternatives.
You're stressed
When adrenaline (the stress hormone) kicks in, the body produces more cortisol, which in turn causes hunger. When you're stressed it's tempting to turn to unhealthy ready meals, high-calorie snacks or alcohol. Stress can also make you feel lethargic. All of these factors take their toll on the waistline.
Fix it: Even in times of stress, eat regular, healthy meals. People who are stressed at work tend to laze around in bed on weekends, but that makes matters worse. Unless you eat within half an hour of waking up, the body will go into fasting mode and store up the last meal in case you don't eat.
Thyroid to blame
Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, slows down the metabolism; many people find they put on weight while it goes undiagnosed. With treatment, the hormones will balance out and weight will soon return to normal.
Fix it: Symptoms of hypothyroidism include tiredness, constipation, aches, dry skin, lifeless hair and feeling cold. If you experience any of these, see your GP for a blood test.
PCOS syndrome
Many overweight women suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS. They have a resistance to insulin, just like people with diabetes, which in the case of PCOS makes it difficult for them to convert the male hormone testosterone in the ovaries into the female hormone oestrogen.
Higher levels of testosterone in the body will make sufferers put on weight and the insulin resistance does the same thing because the body can't utilise the calories it is taking in.
Fix it: Patients are treated with metformin (the same medication given to type 2 diabetics). It reduces the insulin resistance, which rectifies the hormone balance. They are also encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating well and exercising regularly. Other symptoms of PCOS include excessive body hair, irregular periods, infertility, hair loss and acne.
Eating late at night
Studies have shown that people who consume the same calories as others, but eat them an hour or two before going to bed will put on more weight than those who eat earlier. This is because the body is aware that you are not being active, so it stores the calories by turning them into fat. It takes the body longer to convert this stored fat into energy again.
Fix it: Eat your main meal at lunchtime and then have a smaller, lighter meal in the evening, at least three hours before going to bed. The body's ability to digest food reduces as the sun sets.
You've cut out carbs
We all know you need a balanced diet to be healthy but for many of us, cutting out carbs is a sure-fire way to reduce a few kilos quickly. However, when you eliminate something from your diet, the body starts to crave it. Carbs are important building blocks for the body to turn into energy.
Fix it: Eat healthy carbs, such as wholemeal breads, rotis, and brown rice. Avoid diets that ban them.

Stroke / Smart plan to cut down on salt
« on: May 27, 2013, 03:07:05 PM »
Our body needs salt to function. Too much raises risk of heart disease and stroke. A smart plan to cut it down
Catch the daily culprits
More than 40 per cent of our sodium intake comes from food we tend to binge on every day. The major culprits are bread, pizza, chicken soup, cheese, pasta, meat dishes such as meat loaf, and snack foods such as potato chips (including canned tomato sauce), and butter popcorn, which you find at the movie halls. To bypass these sodium traps, compare nutrition labels on your favourite foods because different brands vary in sodium content. Replace pre-packaged canned food with fresh food.
Study food labels
While there is sodium in almost everything we eat, the amount of this mineral in condiments are shocking. When you read a food's ingredients, salt (sodium chloride) isn't the only thing you should be looking for. There are other sodium-containing compounds such as monosodium glutamate (MSG), sodium nitrate, which will up the total sodium count. For instance, one tablespoon of soy sauce has 920 mg of sodium; even those labelled "low sodium" have 575 mg of sodium. Other big offenders include tomato sauce (640 mg per half cup) and barbecue sauce (420 mg per two tablespoons). If you overdo it at one meal, make sure you balance it out by making lowsodium choices the rest of the day. Also, low-fat doesn't mean lowsodium. When food companies take out fat, they often replace it with salt to enhance flavour.
Find other spices
Instead of sprinkling salt over the dish, use fresh or dried herbs and spices like garlic, basil, cumin, chili peppers, rosemary, ginger or cinnamon to enhance the flavour. You can also try flavoured vinegars, such as fig, pear and cranberry. Premixed blends of spices often contain salt. Nutritionists recommend that you go for 'no or low-sodium' labels.
Eat out wisely
Stick to restaurants where your food is cooked to order rather than eateries where food may be pre-packaged (like soup, gravy). Choose simple items without gravies or sauces and ask them to be prepared without salt. Simple measures may also help. Order baked potato instead of the mashed potatoes with your sizzlers, but don't eat the skin, which may have been oiled and salted before baking. Add a salad to fill up on greens, but avoid dressings since they're often loaded with sodium. Request that grilled entrees, like fish and chicken, be cooked without salt.
Watch portion size
You may think you're doing fine because you only had a packet of chips. However, check out the label for serving size. A handful of potato chips are 170mg of sodium. If you are going to indulge, measure out your portion so you don't overdo it.
Time to adapt
Your taste for salt is acquired, so it will take you time to get used to a lower-sodium diet. When you first cut back, food may taste a little bland. Decrease your salt intake gradually, and after a few weeks, you probably won't even miss it.
Daily sodium allowance
Medical experts say daily intake of sodium for healthy adults is 2300 mg. If you're older than 51, it's only 1550 mg. It may sound like a lot but it's surprising how quickly your meals can add up to your daily allowance. The best way to ensure that you're consuming the right amount of sodium is by treating it like it's money and you're on a budget. Eat it wisely and keep a watch on what you consume. Try not to exceed 600 mg of sodium per meal and snacks

Teeth / Are you replacing toothbrush every 3 months? [ part-1]
« on: May 27, 2013, 12:00:29 PM »
We have all along known the importance ofdental hygiene, but could never whip up enthusiasm to pursue it religiously.

Blame it on the smattering of information available, we are left wondering from where to begin, and if one can ever do it the right way.

Aesthetic dentistry expert Dr Sushant Umre exchanges some invaluable notes on oral care.

Most appropriate way to brush your teeth
Proper brushing is essential for cleaning teeth and gums effectively. Use a toothbrush with soft, nylon, round-ended bristles that will not irritate teeth or damage gums.

Place bristles along the gumline at a 45-degree angle. Bristles should contact both the tooth surface and the gumline. Gently brush first, the outer tooth surface and then the inner surface of the tooth using a vibrating back and forth rolling motion.

Tilt brush vertically behind the front row of teeth. Make several up and down strokes using the front half of the brush. Place the brush against the biting surface of the teeth and use a gentle back and forth scrubbing motion. Brush the tongue from back to front to remove odour-producing bacteria.

You may want to supervise your children until they get the hang of these simple steps. Use a pea-sized dab toothpaste, preferably fluoride free if the child is below six years of age and take care that your child does not swallow the toothpaste.

The right tooth paste and toothbrush
Use a toothbrush with soft, nylon, round-ended bristles that will not irritate teeth or damage gums. One of the main things to look for in a toothbrush are its bristles. Most dentists recommend soft bristles, especially for those individuals who have sensitive teeth and gums. Both adults and children should use a toothbrush that has soft bristles. Toothbrushes with harder bristles are not more effective at removing plaque or stains.

Be sure to select a toothbrush head size that can easily fit into the mouth and is capable of brushing a row of teeth at a time. With this in mind, be sure to select a toothbrush with a very small head for a very young child.

Toothbrushes should be replaced about every three months or earlier if the bristles begin to look worn or frayed (bristles that fan out or spread is a sign that it is time to get a new toothbrush).

After consulting with your dentist or hygienist about your oral health's greatest needs, look for products within that category (for example, within the tartar control brands or within the desensitizing toothpaste brands). Always pick a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride toothpastes have been shown to prevent cavities, but in children under six years of age it can be avoided as they have a tendency to swallow it.

Crying babies really do calm down when they are picked up and cradled according to a study that has discovered a deeper scientific basis to a phenomenon that every new mother soon realises to be true.
Scientists in Japan have found that the heart rate of crying babies slows down when they are in put in the arms of their mothers and carried about – but not if the mother remains still, the study found.
Kumi Kuroda and colleagues at RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Saitama discovered the same behavioural trait in young mouse pups and postulated that the phenomenon in human babies stems from an ancient evolutionary response to being handled.
“From humans to mice, mammalian infants become calm and relaxed when they are carried by their mother. This infant response reduces the maternal burden of carrying and is beneficial for both the mother and the infant,” Dr Kuroda said.
The study, published in the journal Current Biology, showed that in addition to slowing the heart rate, carrying babies around caused the involuntary activation of movement detectors in the nervous system which are controlled by the cerebellum region of the brain.
Dr Kuroda made the discovery after noticing that mouse pups became quiet and relaxed when they were gripped and moved gently by their collar, in much the same way that their mothers carry them from one nest to another.
“When I picked the pups up at the back skin very softly and swiftly as mouse mothers did, they immediately stopped moving and became compact. They appeared relaxed, but not totally floppy, and kept the limbs flexed,” Dr Kuroda said.
“This calming response in mice appeared similar to me to soothing by maternal carrying in human babies,” she said.
Knowing how and why babies are likely to be calmed by carrying them could help to avoid cases of child abuse when parents become frustrated and anxious as a result of babies continuing to cry for long periods, Dr Kuroda said.
“A scientific understand of this infant response will save parents from misreading the restart of crying as the intention of the infant to control the parents, as some parenting theories such as the ‘cry it out’ type of strategy suggests,” she said.
“Rather this phenomenon should be interpreted as a natural consequence of the infant’s sensorimotor systems,” she added.

Skin / 9 common skin problems and solutions
« on: May 27, 2013, 11:42:07 AM »
As the body's protective outer-shell, your skin puts up with a lot. Harmful elements such as chemicals, infections, cuts, scrapes, and sunlight keep the seemingly delicate organ under near-constant assault. The addition of sweaty gym-sessions and stress send your epidermis into overdrive, leaving it no choice but to react.
We're not saying a flawless exterior is impossible, but it takes effort. We talked with Dr. Monica Carezani-Gavin, owner and medical director of Azani Medical Spa in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, about how to deal with common skin problems and what to do when something pops (or shrivels) up.
Acne
Contrary to what most guys think, pimples don't stop popping up when your voice finishes changing. Raging hormones were responsible in your teen years, but other factors such as humidity, stress, heavy sweating, or the use of steroids cause the irritating red bumps now.
Even if you're the figure of perfect personal hygiene and diet, you'll still see flare-ups. In fact, washing your face too much can cause acne to get worse.
If your acne is bad enough to rattle your confidence, see a primary care physician. "Acne truly is a medical condition that requires medical treatment," Carezani-Gavin said. "A primary care physician can also help identify the cause of even occasional flare-ups and advise accordingly."
Not a fan of lab coats? Pick up a 5 percent, over-the-counter, benzoyl-peroxide skin wash from your local drug store, and use it twice a day. "A lot of patients do wonderfully just with that," Carezani-Gavin said.
Razor burn
Razor burn may mean a few hours of discomfort and a red face, or it can be as serious as an irritating rash with infected blisters and pimples lasting several days. Shaving technique's probably not your problem—by now you have mastered the perfect amount of pressure to shear hair and leave untainted skin behind. But other common blunders can result in feeling the burn.
Wash your face in warm water before you shave, use new, sharp, razor blades (or clean blades with an electric shaver), apply lubricant such as soap or shave gel, and always shave with the grain of the hair in short, deliberate strokes to avoid razor burn.
Too late for prevention? Rub on an aloe-based cortisone cream or soothing aftershave with vitamin E to calm the skin and reduce redness. It'll work better than plain moisturizer.
Sunburn
This skin injury shows up immediately after our skin is exposed to UV radiation. Some guys hardly ever turn lobster red—those with more of a brown pigment called melanin that protects the skin from the effects of UV radiation. But a fair-skinned guy can burn and blister in the dead of winter.
Everyone can benefit from prevention strategies like daily sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats, even in the winter. But when it's too late for prevention and you need a quick fix for painful sunburn, reach for vitamin E. "For any kind of skin trauma, applying vitamin E twice a day helps the skin heal itself," Dr. Carezani-Gavin said. For best results, cut a vitamin E supplement in half and rub the gel directly onto your skin.
Rosacea
We all know the red-faced guy who eternally looks like he knocked back a few too many glasses of scotch. While that may be the case, some people—about 14 million Americans—credit their rosy face to the inflammatory skin disease called rosacea. It's not life threatening, but it delivers a major blow to your appearance and self-esteem. And if left untreated, it gets worse over time.
The antidote for this one requires prescription drugs, but self-care is important too. Everyone is different, so it's necessary to pinpoint what causes flare-ups—the sun, certain foods—and minimize exposure to those things. Other prevention strategies include wearing sunscreen, avoiding rubbing or touching the face too much, and not using products with alcohol on the skin.
Athlete's foot
Any guy who works out is at risk for athlete's foot—it multiplies in public areas such as communal showers, locker rooms, and fitness centers. The infection starts in the spaces between your toes, but it can spread to your toenails and the sides of your feet.
The good news is this fungal infection responds well to over-the-counter treatments such as Lotrimin-AF and Lamisil-AT. A tube of Lamisil is more expensive than most anti-fungal creams and powders, but it works faster. Wash and dry your feet twice a day to avoid repeat infection. And if the weather permits, let your feet breath by wearing sandals—no socks.
More severe cases of athlete's foot may require prescription medication. Call your doctor if home remedies aren't helping after a week.
Wrinkles
Wrinkles may conjure the image of your sweet, elderly grandmother, but the fact is, they happen to everyone. It's part of getting older—skin gets thinner, drier, and less elastic.
Since you can't turn back the hands of time, protect your skin from further damage. Number one priority: ban cigarettes. Even if you've smoked for years, quitting now will prevent future wrinkles. Protect your skin from the sun by wearing hats and sunscreen, even in winter. And rub on a moisturizer every night before bed. Dry skin turns plump skin cells into shriveled ones, creating lines and wrinkles.
"Once a wrinkle is there, it's like a crease in a piece of paper—it's not ever going to completely go away," Dr. Carezani-Gavin said. "It's extremely important for men in their 20s and 30s to take good care of their skin now to prevent the onset of wrinkles."
Groin rash
An itchy, red, rash in your groin area is unsettling; but jock itch is much more bothersome and uncomfortable than it is a serious issue. The same fungus that causes athlete's foot leads to this problem in guys who sweat a lot.
Reduce your risk of jock itch by taking the following steps: bathe daily, stay dry in your groin area, change underwear often, avoid thick clothing in warm weather, make sure anything you wear down there (athletic supporter, sports uniforms) fits correctly, and don't share your stuff.
If it's too late for prevention, doctors suggest using an over-the-counter antifungal ointment (Lamisil AT), lotion, powder, or spray. Most infections respond well to topical means.
Staph infections
Right now there' s likely some staphylococcus aureus bacteria—staph—on your skin, in your nose, or in your throat. Most of the time, the bacteria are harmless or cause mild skin infections, but a staph infection can turn deadly if it gets into your body.
What can you do now? Make a habit of washing your hands, keep any wounds covered with bandages, and never hesitate to get tested.
Also: Keep an eye on minor skin problems—pimples, bug bites, cuts, and scrapes—and call you doctor if they become infected. Drugs that treat ordinary staph infections aren't effective against MRSA, (they could make it worse) so always ask if there's a chance your infection is MRSA.
Warts
Common warts are a harmless growth of cells caused by direct contact with the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus is passed from person to person, but you can get it by touching a towel or other object used by someone who has it.
Warts eventually disappear, but they're gross looking and embarrassing, so you likely don't want to wait. And unless you have an impaired immune system or diabetes, there's a simple home-remedy: salicylic acid.
Go to any drugstore and look for a solution or patch containing 17 percent salicylic acid. It requires daily use for a few weeks, but it'll peel off the infected skin. For best results, soak your wart in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes before applying

People who get more fiber in their diet are less likely to have a stroke than those who skimp on the nutrient, according to a new review of existing research.
"A few people in the past have looked at the relationship between fiber and cardiovascular disease, which includes coronary heart disease and stroke," senior author Victoria Burley told Reuters Health.
But this is the first time all the available results from long-term studies have been pulled together into one analysis, said Burley, a senior lecturer in nutritional epidemiology at the University of Leeds in the UK.
Burley and her coauthors pooled the results of eight studies conducted since 1990 that included close to 500,000 participants. Those people reported on their dietary fiber consumption and were followed for anywhere from eight to 19 years.
The researchers found the risk of suffering a first stroke fell by 7 percent for every 7-gram increase in dietary fiber people reported each day - so that those who ate the most fiber had the lowest chance of stroke, according to findings published in the journal Stroke.
The average U.S. woman gets 13 grams of fiber per day, and the average man gets 17 grams - well below the Institute of Medicine recommendation of 24 and 35 grams, respectively.
An extra 7 grams could come from two slices of whole wheat bread and a serving of fruit, for example, Burley said. But even less than that - just 2 or 3 extra grams per day - might affect stroke risk.
Americans suffer almost 800,000 strokes annually, and strokes cause one out of every 18 U.S. deaths, or 130,000 per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most happen when a clot blocks blood flow in a brain vessel.
"Stroke is a very common and chronic disease in our society because the risk factors are growing," Dr. Dean Sherzai, a neurologist at Loma Linda University in California, told Reuters Health.
The new results are important because at the moment there are limited treatments and preventive measures available for stroke, but diet changes such as adding more fiber are relatively easy, said Sherzai, who was not involved in the study.
The report didn't look at the effects of different types of fiber on people of specific ages - so it's possible some may glean more benefit from eating extra fiber than others, he added.
The findings don't prove fiber directly prevents strokes. Researchers also don't know why fiber would be linked to a lower risk, although they have some ideas.
"There could be all sorts of things going on," Burley said.
Foods high in fiber tend to be low-calorie and help people maintain a healthy weight, which reduces stroke risk, she said. Fibrous foods also have vitamins, minerals and antioxidants including polyphenols and flavonoids, which make blood vessels more elastic.
The findings should serve as more encouragement for people to get their daily recommended fiber, Burley said. She'd like to see fiber back on the agenda - since it sometimes falls to the wayside in low-carbohydrate or gluten-free diets.

Health Tips / Negative thoughts can be contagious
« on: May 26, 2013, 09:51:18 PM »
The way the people around us respond to stressful events — whether those people react negatively or positively — may be contagious when we are in the midst of a major life transition, a new study says.
What's more, the increased risk of depression that comes with negative thinking  also seems to rub off during these times, the study found.
For the study, researchers looked at 103 pairs of college-freshmen roommates' "cognitive vulnerability," which is the tendency to think that negative events are a reflection  of a person's own deficiency or that they will lead to more negative events. Those with high cognitive vulnerability are at an increased risk of depression, studies have found.
"We found that participants' level of cognitive vulnerability was significantly influenced by their roommates’ level of cognitive vulnerability, and vice versa," the researchers wrote. All roommates in the study were selected randomly; students did not choose their roommates. Only three months of living together was needed for this contagiousness to be seen.
The researchers also found that those who experienced an increase in cognitive vulnerability during the first three months of college had nearly twice the level of depressive symptoms  at six months, compared with those who did not experience an increase in cognitive vulnerability, according to the study. The effect was particularly strong when participants were under high-stress conditions.
Prior to this study, it was thought that cognitive vulnerability didn't change much once a person passed early adolescence. However, the new findings suggest that during big transitions in life  — when a person is continually exposed to a new social situation — cognitive vulnerability can be altered, the researchers said.
They noted that genetic, biological and environmental factors all likely play a role in a person's level of cognitive vulnerability.
Further research is needed to determine whether cognitive vulnerability may change over time, the researchers said, noting that college freshmen are in a unique social environment.
"Our findings are consistent with a growing number of studies that have found that many psychological and biological factors previously thought to be set in stone by adulthood  continue to be malleable," the researchers said.

The pain of migraine headaches might not be caused by expanded blood vessels in the brain, as previously thought. Instead, the real culprit may be overactive pain-signal firing in brain cells, new research suggests.
Moreover, there are several treatments being developed that could address this signaling and, in turn, help treat migraine pain. However, further studies are needed to confirm that the overactive signaling is a cause of migraine pain.
"Many people are nonresponders to existing drugs," said study co-author Dr. Messoud Ashina, a physician at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. "So there is room for improvement — that's why we need the new drugs."
Ashina and his co-authors have received money from pharmaceutical companies. The findings, which were published online April 9 in the journal Lancet Neurology, come from studying the brain scans of patients as they were suffering from a migraine.
Mysterious phenomenon
About one in 10 Americans suffer from migraines, with women more likely to be affected. The headaches typically last from four to 72 hours, and are often accompanied by nausea, pain, and sensitivity to light and sound. Past studies showed an increased risk of stroke and depression in women who suffer from migraines.
The most common treatments for migraines, a class of medicines called triptans, were thought to relieve migraine pain by constricting blood vessels in the brain. But past research suggested only 30 percent of people suffering from a migraine are pain-free two hours after taking a triptan, Ashina said.
In recent decades, researchers have wondered whether pain signals from sensory neurons in the brain may be the true cause of migraine pain.
Brain pain
To study migraines in real time, Ashina and his colleagues looked at 19 women who  were experiencing migraines. Using a technique called magnetic resonance angiography, the scientists measured the blood flow in the women's brains, and found that only a few blood vessels inside the brain were modestly dilated.
Then, they gave patients a triptan, and their average pain levels reduced dramatically.
However, the triptans constricted blood vessels on the outside of the brain, not the vessels that were mildly dilated during the migraine. That suggests that the triptans relieved migraine pain not by constricting blood vessels, but by another mechanism — possibly by quieting pain signals from neurons.
Future treatments
The findings cast doubt on vessel dilation as the primary cause of migraine pain, Ashina said.
"We think that the pain signals are coming from the neurons, and the modest dilation that we see — it is a kind of consequence of this activation of these neurons," Ashina said.
That's good news, because several potential migraine treatments — which belong to a class of medicines called CGRP antagonists and are designed to specifically target the chemical signals implicated in migraine pain — are already being developed, Ashina said.

Scientists have for the first time transformed human embryonic stem cells intonerve cells to help mice regain the ability to learn and remember. The study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison in US is the first to show that human stem cells can successfully implant themselves in the brain and then heal neurological deficits.

Once inside the mouse brain, the implanted stem cells formed two common, vital types of neurons, which communicate with the chemicals GABA or acetylcholine.

"These two neuron types are involved in many kinds of human behaviour, emotions, learning, memory, addiction and many other psychiatric issues," said senior author Su-Chun Zhang, a professor of neuroscience and neurology.

The human embryonic stem cells were cultured in the lab, using chemicals that are known to promote development into nerve cells. After the transplant, the mice scored significantly better on common tests of learning and memory in mice.

The study began with deliberate damage to a part of the brain that is involved in learning and memory.

"Developing brain cells get their signals from the tissue that they reside in, and the location in the brain we chose directed these cells to form both GABA and cholinergic neurons," Zhang said. The initial destruction was in an area called the medial septum, which connects to the hippocampus by GABA and cholinergic neurons.

"This circuitry is fundamental to our ability to learn and remember," Zhang said. The transplanted cells, however, were placed in the hippocampus, a vital memory center. After the transferred cells were implanted, in response to chemical directions from the brain, they started to specialize and connect to the appropriate cells in the hippocampus

Food / Health benefits of black tea
« on: May 26, 2013, 09:32:56 PM »
It is said that coffee is harmful to health, unlike tea. But it's important to know why tea is beneficial to health. Black tea, for that matter, has many health benefits.

Black tea (just like green tea) is plucked from a plant called camellia sinensis. The leaves of black tea, are steeped such that it can give a dark colour when used as a beverage. Also, the leaves are mature dry and processed such that it has a dark colour. Black tea has extremely low caffeine content, which is great for circulation.

Fluoride is another content of black tea and thus allows oral and bone health. Black tea, contains flavonoids which are also found in apples. Unlike green tea, black tea, once processed eliminates all antioxidants existing in it. Black tea not only helps to fight bacteria but also strengthens the immune system. As one knows, drinking tea hydrates the body, thus a cup of black tea helps moisturise the skin. Black tea also balances the hormone levels, which fends off stress. Not only does black tea have anti-inflammatory qualities, it also keeps a check on the digestive tracts functioning. It can help reduce stroke risks as it balances the cholesterol level.

Food / 9 meals a day cuts cholesterol, flab
« on: May 26, 2013, 09:31:05 PM »
Suggesting that eating little and often is healthier for us, experts have said that we should eat as many as nine meals every day.

They say this may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and even encourage weight loss, theDaily Mail reported.

"Splitting food intake so we eat many times a day will have metabolic benefits over and above the same food consumed in a small number of meals," the paper quoted Dr Susan Jebb, head of the Medical Research Council's Human Nutrition Research Unit, as saying.

In one of the latest studies, scientists from Imperial College, London, compared the diets of more than 2,000 people from the UK, Japan, China and the U.S.

While they all had the same calorie intake and food, half the participants ate fewer than six times a day, while the remainder ate more than six times.

Results show the first group had a significantly higher systolic blood pressure — the pressure that blood exerts on vessels while the heart is beating — compared with the more frequent eaters. They were also significantly heavier.

Another research from the University of Athens, based on more than 2,000 children aged nine to 13, found those who ate five times a day were 32.6 per cent less likely to have high levels of bad cholesterol than those who ate fewer meals.

Meanwhile, eating at least four small meals a day — a 'nibbling' diet, as researchers called it — sped up metabolism and lowered the risk of obesity, according to a Maastricht University study.

It's not clear why eating more often has these benefits, but one theory is that frequent mealsprevent a high influx of fatty acids — compounds that are released from foods and can lead to a build-up of fats in the arteries, and also contribute to high cholesterol levels.

The build-up can also narrow the blood vessels, leading to high blood pressure.

Eating more frequently during the day means there are no sudden spikes of fatty acids, enabling the body to deal with the intake more effectively.

Eating more frequently may boost energy levels, suggests a study from the University Of Montana.

When forest firefighters were given standard lunches or ration 'grazing' packs designed to be eaten over a long period of time, those who had grazing packs did 25 per cent more work than thelunchbox workers.

So how is this approach different from just adding a snack between meals? The regularity of the smaller meals may be just as important as the quantity, say experts.

However, eating frequent meals is not an excuse to eat more, said Dr Susan Jebb, and it's important that calorie intake is tightly controlled if people are going to eat as many as six or nine meals a day.

Food and Nutrition Science / Foods that trigger headaches
« on: May 26, 2013, 08:38:01 PM »
For many headache and migraine sufferers, certain foods can act as triggers.
We received this question from a viewer:
Dear Dr. Manny,
I've noticed that whenever I eat red grapes I get a headache. Could there be something in them that is causing this to happen?
Thanks, Jay
Alvarez said grapes are low in calories and rich in vitamin C and fiber, so they are a nutritional snack. But they also contain a substance called tyramine, a naturally occurring amino acid that forms from the breakdown of protein in food as it ages.
Tyramine can cause your blood pressure to rise, which can trigger headaches in some people.
If you experience this reaction, you may want to avoid other trigger foods, such as:
• Smoked or cured meats
• Aged cheeses
• Citrus fruits
• Sauerkraut
• Soy sauce
• Red wine
• And certain beers
Research shows that tyramine in grapes can have a negative effect on certain antidepressants called MAOIs.  Patients taking these medications should talk to their doctor about their diet. Keeping a food diary to see if you may be sensitive to tyramine-rich foods could also help.
The bottom line: Learn what your triggers are – so that you can avoid them.

Islam / Full process of a prosperous life (part-1)
« on: May 25, 2013, 03:25:38 PM »
