Be a Leader / 10 Recommendations Toward Effective Leadership
« on: September 12, 2017, 02:21:52 PM »
David W. Leslie, Chancellor professor of education at the College of William and Mary, notes that “colleges and universities have presented leadership conundrums…from the most varied perspectives…Yet this vast trove of purported wisdom remains somehow unsatisfying and desperately random” (Wergin, 2007, p. xv). That is to say, despite all that has been written about leadership, the question still remains: What does it take to be an effective leader?

At the risk of being redundant, I wish to share 10 recommendations that I am convinced enhance an individual’s ability to be an effective leader. These principles are based on the concept of “leading in place” as recently popularized by Wergin and Shapiro. Shapiro (2005) states, “Leadership is an action, not a title, and the ability to lead can be found in every person. Each of us must claim our authority to lead atthe right time and in the right place” (p. 1).

Here are 10 characteristics that I have found to positively contribute to effective emergent leadership. My suggestions are presented in a David Letterman-ish style, beginning with the least and advancing to the most important.

Number 10: Follow procedures and adhere to policies. Effective leaders are essentially good followers. They understand that they are accountable to those in authority. They know it is not a good idea to behave as a lone wolf, but that they must instead keep their work priorities aligned with the organization’s goal and have an appropriate sense of self-importance. People who lead in place value the necessity of following procedures and adhering to established policies.

Number 9: Submit to the authority of others. Closely related to number 10 is the recognition that we are all under the authority of someone, whether it is a supervisor, director, president, board of governors, or whomever else.

Number 8: Take risks. Sometimes it is necessary for leaders to step outside the box, to be innovative. Leaders must be flexible enough to know when it is time to try a new procedure or implement a new policy. For many taking a risk is frightening, but such behavior can be invaluable, benefiting the entire group.

Number 7: Commitment. Any person who assumes a leadership role needs to be committed to the group. The group’s vision and mission must be internalized by the leader. An effective leader is a person who can commit to using his or her ability to lead others, perform technical skills, and conceptualize situations, thus helping to ensure goal achievement.

Number 6: Be proactive. Covey (1989) points out the need to be proactive. Individuals who assume leadership must take the proverbial bull by the horns and move forward to be successful.

Number 5: Expect conflict. Conflict among people is a natural, inevitable, and constant factor of human interaction. An effective leader expects conflict and is able to manage it in a productive manner.

Number 4: Tell the truth, but with compassion. To some degree conflicts occur because people are not able to differentiate between task-related conflict issues and their personal investment in a given situation. Bracey, Rosenblum, Sanford, and Trueblood (1990) point out the importance of truthfulness in leadership. Yet at the same time the leader must compassionately tell the truth (e.g., about a faculty member’s job performance, etc.).

Number 3: Listen. Communication plays a vital role in the achievement of interpersonal and organizational goals. Communication is a two-way process. Effective communication requires leaders capable of effective listening. Covey’s (1989) Habit #5, Seek First to Understand, Then Seek to Be Understood, reflects the epitome of effective listening. Ineffective listening undermines people’s self-esteem, self-confidence, and creativity. Remember, hearing and listening are not synonymous terms.

Number 2: Love people. Roger D’Aprix stated that leaders must be “loving in [their] organizational relationships” (cited in Goldhaber, 1993, p. 217). “Loving” in this context means that we acknowledge the value of our coworkers and respect them with the dignity they deserve. We let them know that we care for them whether we like them or not. The bottom line is that individuals must value people and relationships with them if they are to claim their “authority” to lead.

Number 1: Check your attitude. I contend that effective leadership begins with a correct mindset. That mind-set is founded upon an individual’s willingness to lead, to serve others. An effective leader desires the opportunity to step up to be involved in controlling not only his or her personal actions, but the actions of those being led. This leadership attitude flows from a reasoned choice; it is a conscious decision to take on the role with all its rights and responsibilities. Amid the natural chaos and interpersonal interactions, effective leaders are able to demonstrate a fixed purpose. Such leadership is determined to ensure not only that personal goals are reached, but more important, that the group achieves its objectives and fulfills its mission. Those who seek to lead in place must be compelled to lead no matter the personal cost.

In closing, allow me to point out that these characteristics are not some magic formula for success, nor do they serve as a 10-step program like the AA 12-step recovery program; but when you adopt these characteristics and their underlying principles, I am certain that you will be a more effective leader. I agree with David W. Leslie, chancellor professor of education, that there has been a lot of thinking, theorizing, and writing about leadership. Yet I am convinced that we should continue to explore what constitutes effective leadership. In doing so it may be that we can bring greater clarity to what it takes to lead effectively.

Salad / Use of Tomato
« on: March 19, 2017, 04:23:04 PM »
High In Antioxidants
Tomatoes are very rich in three common, yet very powerful, antioxidants: vitamin C, vitamin A and beta-carotene. They also contain good amounts of manganese and vitamin E. However, it is the tomato’s rich concentration of the antioxidant compound lycopene that makes it a real star in the antioxidant world. Lycopene is associated with reduced risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol levels, anti-inflammatory properties, and the prevention of age related diseases such as macular degeneration.

Heart Health
Lycopene, vitamin C and the other major antioxidants found in tomatoes are known to improve cardiovascular health by adding oxygen to the blood stream, improving blood flow and circulation, lowering cholesterol levels and improving fat blood profiles.

Bone Health
Antioxidants like lycopene may be essential in maintaining healthy bones because they help prevent oxidative stress to the bones. The high levels of potassium found in tomatoes may also promote good bone health.

Anti-Inflammatory
Tomatoes contain several carotenoids considered to be effective anti-inflammatory agents. Vegetables with high levels of antioxidants are also considered beneficial to the body’s inflammation system.

Potassium Rich
Tomatoes are rich with potassium, a vitamin often found deficient in the human diet. Low levels of potassium have been associated with high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, cancer and digestive disorders.

Eye Health
Research has linked the antioxidants in tomatoes with reduced risk of macular degeneration. Lycopene and vitamin A are thought to have the most positive effects on the eyes.

Diabetes
Tomatoes are a good source of the mineral chromium, which may help diabetics regulate blood sugar levels.

Alzheimer’s Disease
A few studies have linked tomato consumption with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease and increased neurological function. However, more studies are needed to prove this connection.

Food / useful tips
« on: March 19, 2017, 04:21:34 PM »
We have all heard it somewhere or the other that drinking warm water with the juice of one lemon, is beneficial for health. Here is delving into the reasons...

Helps your digestive system
Warm lime water on an empty stomach early in the morning helps stimulate the gastrointestinal tract. Digestion improves, heartburn is reduced and it helps in the process of elimination.

Detoxifies liver
Lemon juice has citric acid, which helps the enzymes to function better. It also stimulates the liver and aids in detoxification.

Works on your pH level
The acidity in our body can be harmful and lemon water can help reduce this. Though lemon has citric acid, the nutrients and minerals in it are alkaline in nature. Citric acid is not a strong acid and so, is easily removed from our bodies by elimination processes like perspiration. Lemon, however, stimulates the formation of calcium carbonate that neutralises other strong acids in the body. This is helpful, especially if your diet is heavy in proteins like meat and cheese. Experts say lemon can help change the pH balance of the blood and can also help in dealing with urinary tract infections.

Strengthens your immune system
All citrus foods are a storehouse of vitamin C. This vitamin is known to fight colds and is good for your immune system. Lemons also have potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function and controls blood pressure.

Clears and freshens your skin
Experts say that vitamin C is great for youthful skin, because it helps in the production of collagen. Its antioxidants revive dull skin and keep it healthy. Warm lemon water removes toxins from the blood stream. Also, diluted lemon juice, when applied to blemishes, can actually help lighten them.

Battles bad breath
Lemon juice battles bad breath by keeping bacteria away.

Aids in weight loss
Lemon juice in the morning fights food craving. Also, it has been found earlier that people who maintain an alkaline diet tend to lose weight more quickly than others.

Do not overdo the lemon bit
Do not overdo the lemon. Just because one lemon helped you lose two kilos, squeezing four in your juice will not help you lose eight! Lemon has corrosive properties too and your tooth enamel may suffer.

Note to remember:
Adding a little honey to your lemon juice makes it more palatable and also battles phlegm and helps rid your body of mucous.

Never:
Use bottled lemon juice. Only the natural lemon is beneficial.

Always:
Rinse your mouth with plain water after you drink lemon juice.

But a parlour at home was not taken positively by the society at that time. Forthis, after 2 years in 1996 she shifted the parlour to Tootpara Kaborkhana More. That wasalso a one room parlour. She felt that customers were facing lots of problems as differentcustomers were coming for different services like bridal make-up, facial, hair-treatment etc. Itwas difficult to provide them better services in one room. By that time she managed to save agood amount of money. With that and loans from SIBL and Prime Bank, she shifted that
small parlour to Shibbari More and named it as „Ritzy‟. It is the first parlour in Khulna where
there are different rooms for every single service. Before that there were no other beautyparlours of Khulna that provided segmental services at different rooms. Today

an icon in this business, especially in Southern part of Bangladesh. That‟s whay she was
motivated to expand her business gradually. Another point is that, once she got a very badhurt at the nerve of her brain and the doctor advised her family members to keep her jolly andtension free all the time. At that time her husband and she decided to start this business. Herhusband is the greatest source of her motivation. At every stage, he was with her wife likeshadow. According to Rezina Mahbub
, “It was quiet impossible for me to survive in thisarena without his help.” She always tried to make her profit double and never disheartened if

We have a great deal of respect for Taslima—not only for the work she’s done over the years, but for who she is as a human being. It was a true pleasure and inspiration to talk with her about her passion, life, rebellious nature, childhood memories, starting up, her unexpected journey into the world of entrepreneurship, her struggle as a woman and as an entrepreneur, her lessons from her journey and how her career has grown over the years. One of our favorite lessons of Taslima’s story is her understanding of life and entrepreneurship and reality of our society that does not allow women to move forward, her diligence in pushing her dream and her confidence in herself. We also loved her future plan that’s a secret though!

Successful Entrepreneur / leadership and management
« on: March 19, 2017, 04:03:09 PM »
Management is the process of setting and achieving organizational goals through its functions: forecasting, organization, coordination, training and monitoring-evaluation.Leadership is: the ability to influence, to make others follow you, the ability to guide, the human side of business for "teacher". Interest in leadership increased during the early part of the twentieth century. Early leadership theories focused on what qualities distinguished between leaders and followers, while subsequent theories looked at other variables such as situational factors and skill levels. Other considerations emphasize aspects that separate management of leadership, calling them two completely different processes. The words manager and lider are very often used to designate the same person who leads, however, they represent different realities and the main difference arises form the way in which people around are motivated. The difference between being a manager and being a leader is simple. Management is a career. Leadership is a calling. A leader is someone who people naturally follow through their own choice, whereas a manager must be obeyed. A manager may only have obtained his position of authority through time and loyalty given to the company, not as a result of his leadership qualities. A leader may have no organisational skills, but his vision unites people behind him. Leadership and management are two notions that are often used interchangeably. However, these words actually describe two different concepts. Leadership is the main component of change, providing vision, and dedication necessary for its realization. Leadership is a skill that is formed by education, experiences, interaction with people and inspiring, of course, practice. Effective leadership depends largely on how their leaders define, follow and share the vision to followers. Leadership is just one important component of the directing function. A manager cannot just be a leader, he also needs formal authority to be effective.

You need to know / Leadership
« on: March 19, 2017, 04:01:33 PM »
For years we were taught that management has to do with forecasting, budgeting, planning and controlling. Managers were taught to manage, not to lead.

New supervisors and grizzled management veterans were taught how to assign work to subordinates, how to evaluate their teammates' work, how to counsel people on performance problems and how to hire and fire staff members. Everything we were taught about management assumed that the manager would know what to do and was calling the shots.

These days we understand that the old-fashioned view of a manager's duties is wholly insufficient for the new-millennium workplace.
Responsibility for a team of people and its success -- not to mention each team members' well-being and professional development -- is a big assignment to take on. Leadership has very little to do with controlling, budgeting and so on. It has little overlap with assigning work and evaluating it.

Our traditional view of management is task-based and mechanical. In that worldview, we don't think about topics like "How are my teammates holding up? Are they stressed out? Are they feeling good about the future and about the energy on the team?"

For years we pretended that human energy isn't a factor in a team's success, even though anybody who has ever been on any kind of team knows that the team energy, also known as trust level, is the whole ballgame!

We can use the carrot and the stick to get people to perform for a while but eventually, if they don't care about the mission, about their leader and/or about one another, the team will fracture and lose steam. It's inevitable! Today we know that empathetic, trust-based human leadership is not only the most effective way to lead a team but also the most profitable way to run a company.

Here are five enormous differences between managers and leaders. If you hold a leadership role now or aspire to do so in the future, think about steps you can take in each of these areas.

Successful Entrepreneur / Richard Branson: Successful entrepreneur
« on: March 06, 2017, 04:30:27 PM »

Since dropping out of school at age 16 to start his first business, billionaire Richard Branson has overseen hundreds of companies. Along the way, he's met and worked with brilliant leaders and entrepreneurs.

"No two successful entrepreneurs are the same," the Virgin Group founder writes on his blog. "In fact, it's their individuality and different ways of thinking that make them successful."

That being said, over his 50-year entrepreneurial career, Branson has noticed that the greatest entrepreneurs do share five distinct skills.

They take calculated risks

"The luckiest people in business are those that are prepared to take the greatest risks," Branson writes. "We can all create our own luck by taking the necessary risks to open the door to change, progression and success."

It's similar to the advice PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel gave Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, according to Zuckerberg: "Peter was the person who told me this really pithy quote: 'In a world that's changing so quickly, the biggest risk you can take is not taking any risk.' I really think that that's true."

There are many business musts, but this article contains I believe to be some of the more important musts that are required to start, operate and grow a profitable  business.

1. Do what you enjoy.

What you get out of your business in the form of personal satisfaction, financial gain, stability and enjoyment will be the sum of what you put into your business. So if you don't enjoy what you're doing, in all likelihood it's safe to assume that will be reflected in the success of your business--or subsequent lack of success. In fact, if you don't enjoy what you're doing, chances are you won't succeed.
2. Take what you do seriously.

You cannot expect to be effective and successful in business unless you truly believe in your business and in the goods and services that you sell. Far too many home business owners fail to take their own businesses seriously enough, getting easily sidetracked and not staying motivated and keeping their noses to the grindstone. They also fall prey to naysayers who don't take them seriously because they don't work from an office building, office park, storefront, or factory. Little do these skeptics, who rain on the home business owner's parade, know is that the number of people working from home, and making very good annual incomes, has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years.
3. Plan everything.

Planning every aspect of your home business is not only a must, but also builds habits that every home business owner should develop, implement, and maintain. The act of business planning is so important because it requires you to analyze each business situation, research and compile data, and make conclusions based mainly on the facts as revealed through the research. A business plan also serves a second function, which is having your goals and how you will achieve them, on paper. You can use the plan that you create both as map to take you from point A to Z and as a yardstick to measure the success of each individual plan or segment within the plan.
4. Manage money wisely.

The lifeblood of any business enterprise is cash flow. You need it to buy inventory, pay for services, promote and market your business, repair and replace tools and equipment, and pay yourself so that you can continue to work. Therefore, all home business owners must become wise money managers to ensure that the cash keeps flowing and the bills get paid. There are two aspects to wise money management.

The money you receive from clients in exchange for your goods and services you provide (income)
The money you spend on inventory, supplies, wages and other items required to keep your business operating. (expenses)

5. Ask for the sale.

A home business entrepreneur must always remember that marketing, advertising, or promotional activities are completely worthless, regardless of how clever, expensive, or perfectly targeted they are, unless one simple thing is accomplished--ask for the sale. This is not to say that being a great salesperson, advertising copywriting whiz or a public relations specialist isn't a tremendous asset to your business. However, all of these skills will be for naught if you do not actively ask people to buy what you are selling.

6. Remember it's all about the customer.

Your home business is not about the products or services that you sell. Your home business is not about the prices that you charge for your goods and services. Your home business is not about your competition and how to beat them. Your business is all about your customers, or clients, period. After all, your customers are the people that will ultimately decide if your business goes boom or bust. Everything you do in business must be customer focused, including your policies, warranties, payment options, operating hours, presentations, advertising and promotional campaigns and website. In addition, you must know who your customers are inside out and upside down.
