The Computer Systems group at Chalmers conducts research on high-performance and low-power computing, including the design and analysis of 1) efficient architectures for mainstream down to embedded platforms, 2) systems-level software to exploit interesting hardware platforms, and 3) verifiable tools to enable more efficient, accurate design space exploration.
Chalmers is a partner in the HiPEAC European Network of Excellence.
The European ERA (Embedded Reconfigurable Architectures) project studies tradeoffs among reconfigurability, performance, and power within the context of heterogeneous, multi-core systems. Chalmers efforts address the balance between performance and power consumption (at all levels), and reconfigurable memory hierarchy design, in particular. We are recruiting for one PhD position.
Job description
The appointee must also have been admitted to Chalmers Doctoral Programme. PhD student positions are limited to five years and will then normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. Admission and employment are regulated by Chalmers’s “Rules of Procedure for Doctoral Programmes”, §4 and §5. Salary follows the agreement for PhD student positions.

Work start should be as soon as possible.

Required qualifications
Applicants shall have a master’s Degree or equivalent (Sw. civilingenjörsexamen) in Computer Engineering or related discipline. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills (in speaking and in writing) are required. Further, since the research work normally involves developing tools to model detailed computer architectures/systems, good mathematics and programming skills are important. Successful candidates will have a profound interest in computer architecture and a foundation in design principles of both processors and memory systems. Experience with operating systems and compilers is a plus.
Application procedure
The application shall be written in English and include the following items:

* An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position

Scholarship / IISH Fellowships
« on: September 08, 2010, 10:36:58 AM »
The International Institute of Social History (IISH) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) is located in Amsterdam. Founded in 1935, it is one of the world's largest documentary and research institutions in the field of social history in general and the history of the labour movement in particular. IISH holds over 3,000 archival collections, some one million printed volumes and about as many audio-visual items. Gathered from across the globe, the IISH collections provide a unique body of materials on social conditions and social movements in many parts of the world.

Facilitating the use of these materials for research by the global scholarly community is central to the mission of the IISH. Whereas scholars from Western Europe and North America regularly find their way to Amsterdam, the institute's collections are less widely known among social historians from other parts of the world, in particular from developing countries. With the generous help of the retail financial service provider SNS Reaal, IISH can now launch a fellowship programme for researchers located in these regions who wish to use its collections for the study of social history, preferably labour history, whether from a regional, national, or comparative and transnational perspective.

Period:
Fellowships are awarded for five months. Each year there are two rounds. This is a call for applications for fellowships for the periods 1 February - 30 June 2011 and 1 September 2011 - 31 January 2012. The call for applications for both of these rounds is open until 1 October 2010. Candidates should clearly indicate on their applications which of these two rounds they are applying for. After award the fellowships cannot be transferred to a period of stay different from the one indicated in the original application. A call for fellowships to start in 2012 will follow in due course.

Regions:
For the current two rounds we invite applications from the following regions: South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, the Caucasus, Eastern Europe, Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union. For scholars from Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Caucasus fellowships are awarded in honour of the renowned Iranian sociologist Dr Gholam-Hossein Sadighi. In future rounds we expect to expand the regional coverage to include Africa and Latin America as well.

Minimum requirements:
a Ph.D. degree or equivalent academic track record. The fellow's research plan should fit the Institute's focus on social history. A close link with the Institute's research programme on 'Global Labour History' is strongly recommended. Fellows are expected to write a report on their research activities at the end of the fellowship period, to take part in the activities of the Institute's Research Department, and to give at least one public lecture.

Applications should be submitted no later than 1 October 2010, using the application form which can be downloaded here, to be returned after completion to: fellowships@iisg.nl.
- download the Application Form http://www.iisg.nl/research/fellowships.php

Fellows receive a monthly stipend of €1,500. The fellowship also includes an economy return flight to the Netherlands, visa support, as well as arrangements for accommodation and health insurance in Amsterdam.

For general information on the International Institute of Social History, please refer to the IISH website, in particular the sections on the IISH collections, the institute's research projects and its Global Labour History research programme. For specific information regarding the fellowship programme send your inquiries to: fellowships@iisg.nl

Selection of applications will take place according the following main criteria:

1. the applicant's qualifications
2. quality and novelty of the proposed research project, as well as its affinity to social and labour history research conducted at the International Institute of Social History
3. relevance of the IISH archival, library and documentary collections to the proposed research project
4. applicant's abilities to interact with other fellows and the IISH's research staff in the English language.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the selection procedure no later than 15.

Feedbacks forward DIU to set up multimedia institute

ByShahidul K K Shuvra

Stakeholders of IT community joined a hi-tech rendezvous to identify basic requirements of creative arts and multimedia industry in the country. The meeting was organised by Daffodil International University which is going to start a bachelor programme on virtual arts and multimedia.

Dr. Syed Akhter Hossain delivered a 20 minutes speech on proposed curriculum for the programme. He told the audiences, “Publishing sector is on the rise after the massive fashion industry. Only multimedia focused sector in the country can earn much than other fields of IT industry. So according to the demands we are designing the course contents for the students with non-science background.”

“The proposed course curriculum will be edited, enriched and modified with taking expert feedbacks, this is our process to improve the four years long course contents. We are feeling privilege to get expert opinions and it will be continuing by expert to expert communication.” He added.

Mustafa Jobbar, President of Bangladesh Computer Samity, told in his comments, “Getting 2D and 3D experts for local software company is very difficult. We may not get skilled persons even in next five years if we want to convert books of school students to software.”

He further mentioned, “I would like to request the teachers to teach first students creativity, how to come out from traditional mindset and train up them by the people who have diverse backgrounds on literature, arts, history etc.”

“There is no alternative than formal education on IT, a few exceptional talents without formal education can be found, but we should not ignore academic training on IT. According to my experience a graphic designing course for our students should be less based on science and mathematics and we have to inspire students to go ahead for specialisation.” He continued his remarks.

T.I.M. Nurul Kabir, Managing Director and CEO, Spinnovation Limited

told, “Our boys are naturally talented and  so we found without formal education some designers are doing up to the mark job. Now 3D animation is dominating the animation field; its demand in west is going up and we should try our best to grip the businesses.”

Shahidul K K Shuvra, IT Editor of The Independent, told, “Our designers often fail to project corporate identity among the product getups; among the western covers we find some exceptional similarities. Our students should learn the meaning of corporate identity before clicking on icons. Aesthetics should be taught at the institute to build up their sense of beauty. ”

Sabur Khan, Chairman and Founder of Daffodil International University, mentioned, “Our Banani campus will be furnished and decorated as a biggest ever graphic designing institute, which will be able to fulfil requirement of our country and we are communicating with international faculties to train up our students.”

Prof. Dr. Lutfar Rahman, Dean of the university, moderated the roundtable discussion.

o       Black spot on the center of the blister

o       Develop painless ulcer with a black area in the center

Note: these symptoms can occur within 7 days of exposure and infection

How it is Spread or Mode of Transmission?

·        Humans can become infected with anthrax by handling infected animals or by inhaling anthrax spores from contaminated animal meats, blood, and saliva.

·        Anthrax can also be spread by eating undercooked meat from infected animals.

Is anthrax transmitted person to person?
No. Anthrax is not contagious.

The illness cannot be transmitted from person to person. Therefore, there is no need to separate individuals suspected of being exposed to anthrax or suffering from anthrax diseases or coworkers.

What drugs are usually used for treatment of anthrax?

Ciprofloxacin, doxycycline and penicillin are choice of drug for the treatment of anthrax in adults and children.

Is there a vaccination for human anthrax?

A protective vaccine has been developed for anthrax; however, it is primarily given to military personnel. Vaccination is recommended only for those at high risk, such as workers in research laboratories that handle anthrax bacteria routinely.
