« on: July 02, 2016, 11:44:44 AM »
The European Union yesterday formally extended damaging economic sanctions against Russia by six months due to a lack of progress in resolving the conflict in eastern Ukraine.  The measures target the oil, financial and defence sectors of the Russian economy and were first imposed after the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in July 2014, blamed on pro-Moscow rebels in eastern Ukraine.

The 86th Social Business Design Lab took place yesterday where six young entrepreneurs presented their project plans and got approval.

The lab, which aims to provide a platform to the children of the borrowers of Grameen Bank to showcase their ideas and get investment, took place at the auditorium of the microcredit bank in the capital.

About 150 participants and observers from national and international organizations and a large number of international visitors attended the programme, Yunus Centre said in a statement.

The six new social business plans are Complete Ladies Shop & Parlor, Lamea Bag House, Lima & Fatema Machinery Store, Amena Flower Nursery, Ritu Enterprise and Bhai Bhai Handmade Soap.

At the lab, the entrepreneurs shed light on the projects' marketing process and sustainability. All six projects were approved for funding from various social business funds.

Since starting its journey in January 2013, a total of 1,175 projects have been presented in the labs. Of them, 1,150 projects were approved for investment and most of them are already in operation, Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus said while chairing the programme.

Faculty Sections / Software Technology Park opens for IT start-ups
« on: July 02, 2016, 11:34:24 AM »
A Software Technology Park was inaugurated today that will prioritise start-up businesses in the information technology (IT) sector of Bangladesh.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, information and communication technology (ICT) adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, inaugurated the park, located at Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar.

“This is one of my dreams in the ICT sector. Due to several issues, the project work could not be started in last three years,” Joy said in the inauguration ceremony.

The 60,000 square feet spaced software park will consist of IT firms. “New entrepreneurs will be given priority in the park,” he told during his speech.

This project was announced in 2012, by the first meeting of the Digital Task Force.

“The Software Technology Park will create revolutionary companies from Bangladesh in the likes of Google and Facebook in the future,” Joy hoped.

Currently, four companies have been allocated space in the park while that of others is underway.

Faculty Sections / Start-up to fight hunger wins top prize
« on: July 02, 2016, 11:33:53 AM »
A start-up that redistributes leftover food from functions, restaurants and the rich to slum dwellers and the hungry won the inaugural edition of the Get in the Ring competition in Bangladesh.

The Food for People app fended off competition from seven other start-ups in the national round of the global competition to clinch the top prize at the event held at Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel in Dhaka yesterday.

The app's four developers will now get a chance to present their idea at the regional final of the competition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“Whenever people have excess food they will just inform us through the app,” said Md Atikur Rahman, chief executive officer and co-founder of the start-up. They will then send personnel with logistics to collect the food and distribute them among the hungry.

The start-up took off last year after 23-year-old Rahman realised that a copious amount of food goes to waste every day in various functions and restaurants in Dhaka, which the city's needy people could do with.

Rahman, who is now studying entrepreneurship at Daffodil International University, said the slum-dwellers also make green furniture from used paper and sell them over the internet.

Daffodil International University is the national host of the international competition known as the Olympic for start-ups. Television station RTV is the organising partner and The Daily Star is the strategic partner.
