Professionalism in the Workplace

Professionalism in the workplace, is a very important part of corporate etiquette. So, what does this term really mean? How do we ensure that it is maintained?

Professionalism in the Workplace

Few people are willing to accept that they have biases. However, almost everyone does. Each one of us has a soft spot for certain people and their kind. However, it is when this bias affects people negatively that we start being unjust. Many people face injustice at work due to lack of professionalism in the workplace. Discrimination due to sex, color, creed, nationality or religion is against professionalism at work. Let us understand this concept a little bit better.

How Does One Define Professionalism

Professionalism is basically, the knowledge that an individual carries about a certain field. At work, professionalism refers to a person doing his job with sincerity, and maintaining professional etiquette and professional ethics in the workplace. It leads to logical and completely unbiased decision making, making it the basis of a good work environment. Professionalism at work, is completely devoid of politics, positive politics or mind games. Its root lies in those who do their work with quality and quantity in mind.

The standard of a person relies upon his professionalism. As it varies from man to man, the career of each individual differs drastically. Professionalism is required at every sphere of life---- not only in the field of formal "Profession". As professionalism incorporates dedication, sincerety, honesty and so on, as a student, parent, member of society, friend, etc.---all have to be professional. However, "Sentiment" is also be counted in informal Profession(alism).

Thank you sir for your nice inclusion in the Forum.

Importance of job rotation

Job rotation is the surest way of keeping the employee away from complacency and boredom of routine. It is difficult for an employee to sustain his interest in a given job for any substantial length of time as humans have the tendency of outgrowing their jobs through the learning and experience that they gain over a period of time. Stimulating human mind through diversity of challenges is a sure way to bring to forefront its creative instincts and in taking the individual and organizational performance to a higher plane. This is where job rotation can prove to be a handy tool.

Potential of job rotation

What is Job Rotation?

Job rotation involves the movement of employees through a range of jobs in order to increase interest and motivation.

Job rotation can improve “multi-skilling” but also involves the need for greater training.

In a sense, job rotation is similar to job enlargement. This approach widens the activities of a worker by switching him or her around a range of work.

For example, an administrative employee might spend part of the week looking after the reception area of a business, dealing with customers and enquiries. Some time might then be spent manning the company telephone switchboard and then inputting data onto a database.

Job rotation may offer the advantage of making it easier to cover for absent colleagues, but it may also reduce' productivity as workers are initially unfamiliar with a new task.

Why is Job Rotation Important?

Job rotation is seen as a possible solution to two significant challenges faced by business:

(1) Skills shortages and skills gaps, and

(2) Employee motivation

Skills shortages occur when there is a lack of skilled individuals in the workforce.

Skills gaps occur when there is a lack of skills in a company’s existing workforce which may still be found in the labour force as a whole.

According to the Treasury and Department for Education and Skills, both skills shortages and gaps are major problems acting as major barriers to economic growth and the reduction in long-term unemployment in the UK.

What is professionalism?
Somebody may say, "I have got a very good voice, nobody can speak like me with Amitav Bachan's voice." The others may say, "I have a lot of experiences dealing with people, so i am a professional".

No, the above examples and qualities of a person referred here are Not the right examples of professionalism.

A professional always keeps objectives of actions in mind and acts as such. The objectives of actions must coincide with the courses of actions.

A professional knows exactly what he is doing, and why he is doing and how he is doing.

A professional doesn't do a work on experimental basis all the time.

A professional performs responsibilities on his own accord; he doesn't need to be notified or reminded of his duties every time.

An amateur thinks human beings are kind of lazy, so they need pushing but a professional does work with self-motivation because he has good sense of responsibility.

The term professionalism is widely used in the formal or institutional environment but in our real life it is also
vital. A teacher teaching Business Taxation without having updated knowledge is meant he is not professional.
A teacher having updated knowledge but irresponsible towards his students is not professional. So, a professional
person should hold relevant updated knowledge, responsibility, discipline and result oriented efforts.
