Guidance for Job Market / 10 Tips for Viva Success
« on: November 21, 2013, 02:05:49 PM »
The viva voce, or the defense, is the final hurdle in becoming a doctor (of philosophy of course). It is also often the most feared part of completing a PhD, fueled by horror stories of evil examiners and 8 hour long exams. I drove myself crazy by reading stories of failed vivas on the internet, and convinced myself of my impending doom. But after having what I can only describe as a relatively pleasant experience, I want to let people know that viva’s aren’t always a hellish experience, as well as sharing my tips for making the best of it.

I should start off by mentioning that my PhD wasn’t smooth sailing. Lots of things went wrong and I had many months of negative results, and because of this I convinced myself I was going to fail. However, I ended up rather enjoying my viva and am sure it is in no small part due to some great advice I received. I want to pass this advice on, so here are my top tips for getting through, and maybe even enjoying, your viva.

1)      Calm down and breathe.  Working yourself up is only going to make things worse, by stopping you sleeping and making you ill. Find a way to relax, be it yoga, running, meditation or video games; but find something to help you stay calm.

2)      Do something fun.  Don’t spend all your time revising. You still need to have fun, or you’ll wear yourself down before the exam. You want to be fresh on the day, so go out and have some fun (maybe with those friends you’ve neglected over the last months/ years).

3)      Believe in yourself.  You have spent the last few years reading about, writing about and doing your project. You are the expert; you know your stuff, remember that.

4)      Go in with a good attitude.  Don’t see the examiners as evil torturers who get kicks out of making you suffer. They want you to pass. However, if you go in thinking that they want you to fail you’ll not only be more scared, you’ll also be more defensive, which isn’t always a good thing. Instead try to think of your examiners as people who are really interested in what you have done and who understand all the problems and pitfalls associated with research.

5)      Look presentable.  Years of lab work may have your wardrobe looking a little worse for wear and your idea of smart as wearing a T-shirt without any stains or holes, but you should try to make a proper effort to dress smart on your viva day. Firstly, looking good will help your self-esteem, making you feel more confident. Secondly, it shows the examining committee that you are serious about your PhD and the viva, which of course you are, and you want them to know that too.

6)      Read your thesis.  While you have spent the last several years doing your research and the last however long writing it up, you want to make sure it is fresh in your mind. This is especially true if you have had a long gap between submitting your thesis and the exam. You don’t have to read it once a day every day until your viva, just make sure you go over it a few times before the exam.

7)      Know the rules.  Every institution is different; for some you have just two examiners, others you also have a convenor. In some institutions you might need to prepare a talk to present before the viva (this was the case for me, and I found it great preparation for the exam). You need to make sure you know what your institution does to ensure you are prepared. One important thing to find out is if you are allowed to bring a copy of your thesis into the exam, and if so, whether you can annotate it.

8)      Make a list of your own corrections.  Unless you are perfect, or had your thesis professionally proof read, your thesis is likely to contain many mistakes. After reading it over so many times you often see what you think should be written, instead of what actually is written. Before your exam, take another look over your thesis (preferably after some time away from it, so you’re more fresh). Find all the mistakes, write them down and take them in to your exam. The examiners will be impressed that you did it, and you’ll be less phased by mistakes they highlight. Plus, you could save yourself some time and correct them before the viva, meaning less time spent on corrections afterwards.

9)      Make plans to celebrate.  Or get a friend to organize something if you’re too busy or nervous. I was so scared of failing I didn’t want to organize anything, but when it was all over and I had passed I was so glad to have a night out organized by my friends, especially after so many Saturday nights doing lab work or writing.

10)   Try to enjoy it.  I know it may seem absurd, but this is the moment all the blood sweat and tears has been leading up to. Enjoy your moment in the spotlight. I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed my viva; I was finally able to get it all off my chest. All the big flaws that I was convinced my examiners would point out were barely touched on, and I got to discuss my thoughts and theories with people who were interested and gave me new perspectives and ideas.

So that’s my advice. What are your top tips for surviving the viva?

Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra  radio broadcasting centre established by the Bangladesh government in exile soon after the WAR OF LIBERATION. The Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, in fact, evolved from the Kalurghat (CHITTAGONG) transmission centre from where the declaration of independence was made by ZIAUR RAHMAN. The Kalurghat radio centre was abandoned when it was heavily shelled by the Pakistan Air Force on March 30. The centre, however, resumed its second phase of activities from 3 April 1971 at Bagafa (Tripura State) with a short wave transmitter. The centre was later shifted to Shalbagan and Bagafa-Belonia Forest Hills Road, Agartala. The key person in organising the centre in its early stage was Balal Muhammad, a scriptwriter and artiste of Radio Pakistan. Several other liberation activists who joined later included Abdullah-Al-Faruque, Abul Kashem Sandwip, Kazi Habibuddin Ahmed Moni, Aminur Rahman, Rashidul Hussain, A M Sharfuzzaman, Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Syed Abdus Shaker, and Mustafa Monwar. The damaged transmitter that they brought with them from Kalurghat was made operative by engineer Syed Abdus Shaker. The daily programme in this phase consisted of a morning transmission between 8.30 and 9 and an afternoon session between 5 and 7.
On May 25, the centre was shifted to Calcutta where it started functioning on the same day. With the arrival of new and experienced radio personnel from Dhaka, the centre became fully operative technically. From May 26, it was named Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. In August, appointment letters were issued for various positions with effect from June 1971.
Two most popular programmes of Swadhin Bangla Betar were 'Charampatra' and 'Jallader Darbar'. Jallader Darbar written by Kalyan Mitra was a satiric serial exposing the inhuman and beastly nature of General Yahya Khan who was depicted in it as 'Kella Fateh Khan'. Raju Ahmed acted in the main role. Charampatra, a satirical composition, was planned by Abdul Mannan, a Member of National Assembly, and written in typical Dhaka dialect by M R Akhter Mukul, who himself used to read it out. The programme proved to be immensely popular. It evinced exceptional sense of humour and a nationalist spirit that helped keep the morale of the freedom fighters high.
Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra was renamed Bangladesh Betar on 6 December 1971, when India gave formal recognition to independent Bangladesh and its provisional government. The Bangladesh government moved to Dhaka on 22 December 1971 and Bangladesh Betar started broadcasting in independent Bangladesh on the same day. [M Siddiqur Rahman]

Top 10 Qualities That Make A Great Leader
Having a great idea, and assembling a team to bring that concept to life is the first step in creating a successful business venture. While finding a new and unique idea is rare enough; the ability to successfully execute this idea is what separates the dreamers from the entrepreneurs. However you see yourself, whatever your age may be, as soon as you make that exciting first hire, you have taken the first steps in becoming a powerful leader. When money is tight, stress levels are high, and the visions of instant success don’t happen like you thought, it’s easy to let those emotions get to you, and thereby your team. Take a breath, calm yourself down, and remind yourself of the leader you are and would like to become. Here are some key qualities that every good leader should possess, and learn to emphasize.

Honesty

Whatever ethical plane you hold yourself to, when you are responsible for a team of people, its important to raise the bar even higher. Your business and its employees are a reflection of yourself, and if you make honest and ethical behavior a key value, your team will follow suit.

George Washington

As we do at RockThePost, the crowdfunding platform for entrepreneurs and small businesses I co-founded, try to make a list of values and core beliefs that both you and your brand represent, and post this in your office. Promote a healthy interoffice lifestyle, and encourage your team to live up to these standards. By emphasizing these standards, and displaying them yourself, you will hopefully influence the office environment into a friendly and helpful workspace.

Ability to Delegate

Finessing your brand vision is essential to creating an organized and efficient business, but if you don’t learn to trust your team with that vision, you might never progress to the next stage. Its important to remember that trusting your team with your idea is a sign of strength, not weakness. Delegating tasks to the appropriate departments is one of the most important skills you can develop as your business grows. The emails and tasks will begin to pile up, and the more you stretch yourself thin, the lower the quality of your work will become, and the less you will produce.

The key to delegation is identifying the strengths of your team, and capitalizing on them. Find out what each team member enjoys doing most. Chances are if they find that task more enjoyable, they will likely put more thought and effort behind it. This will not only prove to your team that you trust and believe in them, but will also free up your time to focus on the higher level tasks, that should not be delegated. It’s a fine balance, but one that will have a huge impact on the productivity of your business.

Communication

Knowing what you want accomplished may seem clear in your head, but if you try to explain it to someone else and are met with a blank expression, you know there is a problem. If this has been your experience, then you may want to focus on honing your communication skills. Being able to clearly and succinctly describe what you want done is extremely important. If you can’t relate your vision to your team, you won’t all be working towards the same goal.

Training new members and creating a productive work environment all depend on healthy lines of communication. Whether that stems from an open door policy to your office, or making it a point to talk to your staff on a daily basis, making yourself available to discuss interoffice issues is vital. Your team will learn to trust and depend on you, and will be less hesitant to work harder.

Sense of Humor

If your website crashes, you lose that major client, or your funding dries up, guiding your team through the process without panicking is as challenging as it is important. Morale is linked to productivity, and it’s your job as the team leader to instill a positive energy. That’s where your sense of humor will finally pay off. Encourage your team to laugh at the mistakes instead of crying. If you are constantly learning to find the humor in the struggles, your work environment will become a happy and healthy space, where your employees look forward to working in, rather than dreading it. Make it a point to crack jokes with your team and encourage personal discussions of weekend plans and trips. It’s these short breaks from the task at hand that help keep productivity levels high and morale even higher.
Positive Attitude

You want to keep your team motivated towards the continued success of the company, and keep the energy levels up. Whether that means providing snacks, coffee, relationship advice, or even just an occasional beer in the office, remember that everyone on your team is a person. Keep the office mood a fine balance between productivity and playfulness.

English: Think positive

If your team is feeling happy and upbeat, chances are they won’t mind staying that extra hour to finish a report, or devoting their best work to the brand.

Creativity

Some decisions will not always be so clear-cut. You may be forced at times to deviate from your set course and make an on the fly decision. This is where your creativity will prove to be vital. It is during these critical situations that your team will look to you for guidance and you may be forced to make a quick decision. As a leader, its important to learn to think outside the box and to choose which of two bad choices is the best option. Don’t immediately choose the first or easiest possibility; sometimes its best to give these issues some thought, and even turn to your team for guidance. By utilizing all possible options before making a rash decision, you can typically reach the end conclusion you were aiming for.

Intuition

When leading a team through uncharted waters, there is no roadmap on what to do. Everything is uncertain, and the higher the risk, the higher the pressure. That is where your natural intuition has to kick in. Guiding your team through the process of your day-to-day tasks can be honed down to a science. But when something unexpected occurs, or you are thrown into a new scenario, your team will look to you for guidance. Drawing on past experience is a good reflex, as is reaching out to your mentors for support. Eventually though, the tough decisions will be up to you to decide and you will need to depend on your gut instinct for answers. Learning to trust yourself is as important as your team learning to trust you.

Ability to Inspire

Creating a business often involves a bit of forecasting. Especially in the beginning stages of a startup, inspiring your team to see the vision of the successes to come is vital. Make your team feel invested in the accomplishments of the company. Whether everyone owns a piece of equity, or you operate on a bonus system, generating enthusiasm for the hard work you are all putting in is so important. Being able to inspire your team is great for focusing on the future goals, but it is also important for the current issues. When you are all mired deep in work, morale is low, and energy levels are fading, recognize that everyone needs a break now and then. Acknowledge the work that everyone has dedicated and commend the team on each of their efforts. It is your job to keep spirits up, and that begins with an appreciation for the hard work.

Confidence

There may be days where the future of your brand is worrisome and things aren’t going according to plan. This is true with any business, large or small, and the most important thing is not to panic. Part of your job as a leader is to put out fires and maintain the team morale. Keep up your confidence level, and assure everyone that setbacks are natural and the important thing is to focus on the larger goal. As the leader, by staying calm and confident, you will help keep the team feeling the same. Remember, your team will take cues from you, so if you exude a level of calm damage control, your team will pick up on that feeling. The key objective is to keep everyone working and moving ahead.

Commitment

If you expect your team to work hard and produce quality content, you’re going to need to lead by example. There is no greater motivation than seeing the boss down in the trenches working alongside everyone else, showing that hard work is being done on every level. By proving your commitment to the brand and your role, you will not only earn the respect of your team, but will also instill that same hardworking energy among your staff. It’s important to show your commitment not only to the work at hand, but also to your promises. If you pledged to host a holiday party, or uphold summer Fridays, keep your word. You want to create a reputation for not just working hard, but also be known as a fair leader. Once you have gained the respect of your team, they are more likely to deliver the peak amount of quality work possible.

Journalism & Mass Communication / 8 Cell Phone Etiquette
« on: July 30, 2013, 04:37:09 PM »
1. The First Principle: It is not other people's responsibility to cope with your mobile phone use; it is your responsibility to use your mobile phone inoffensively. Please note that "inoffensively" is not defined by what you expect others to tolerate, but by what others do in fact find offensive. Ignore this principle, and you are sure to be rude

2. Following directly from the First Principle: You should assume that someone who asks you to turn your cell phone (or audio player) down or off is in good faith, and you should comply in good faith. They have a reason for asking, and it's probably not that they're trying to dominate you or hassle you or restrict your God-given right to free expression. (For example, people with temporal lobe epilepsy may find that certain sounds trigger seizures, and some people have neuro-sensory issues that cause extraneous noise to be a severe difficulty rather than a mild annoyance.)

3. Stay away from others while talking on the phone. If possible, keep a 10-foot (3 meter) distance between you and anyone else whenever you talk on your phone. Most people do not want to hear what you're talking about.

4. Try not to talk on the phone in any enclosed spaces, even if you're more than 10 feet away from anyone. They can still hear you (because it's an enclosed space) and usually, they're forced to just sit there and listen (and maybe be annoyed to some extent).

5. Don't talk too loudly. Generally you don't have to shout in the microphone to be heard on the other end. In fact, doing so often makes it harder for you to be understood. In addition, shouting on the phone disrupts people around you.

6. Don't put your phone on speaker. Just as many people do not want to hear your end of the conversation, they don't want to hear the other person's either.

7. Do not talk about personal details in public. Personal is just that: personal. If callers want to talk about personal details, tell them that you will call them back later, move someplace where you can have a little privacy, or switch to text messaging.

8. Don't multi-task. Avoid making calls while driving, shopping, banking, waiting in line, or doing almost anything that involves interacting with other human beings. In some situations it puts your life and the lives of others in danger, and in other situations it can bother some people.

Whether you have done one interview or 100 interviews, there is always one question that you were not expecting. Employers and interviewers create "trick" questions so that they can divide the prepared applicants from the unprepared ones. With the help of these 13 questions, you can show any potential employer that you are on top of your game.
1. How long do you plan to stay with our company?

While it is unlikely that they company is going to put you under contract, they are looking to see how committed you are to staying with the company. This is the question that will help them weed out any applicant that plans to use the company as a resume filler or a stepping stone.

2. Describe a situation where your work or an idea was criticized?

Tip: Never let on that your work was criticized. Instead, give an example of when an idea did not go over as well as you had hoped. Then, explain what you did to rectify the situation, whether it was to create a whole new idea or just enhance the original one. Be sure to mention how the situation ended on a positive note.

3. How does this position or job compare to others for which you have applied?

This question was designed to find out where else their applicants have applied. Just like in a game of cards, you never want to let them see what kind of hand you hold. As an alternative, tell them that this position is perfect for you and unlike any other for which you have applied. If pressed, tell them that all of the positions, no matter how different, fall within your criteria and qualifications.

4. What would you describe as a good work environment?

Simply put, how needy are you? Do you require a calm and happy environment or do you like a fast-paced and sometimes stressful position that keeps you on your toes. A question like this will also help to determine if you like to work alone or in a team, or a little of both (which of course is the best answer).

5. Do you feel you were better at your position than your co-workers?

This one is tricky; and not just the question, but the answer as well. Of course you want to be confident and say that you do your job better than anyone else. However, you have to say it without criticizing your co-workers. Never say anything bad about the people you work with at your current job or any past ones. Rather, talk about all of your strengths that help you do your job well.

6. How do you feel about a position with routine tasks and regular hours?

How does anyone feel about routine tasks? Boring! Your job may have little to do with "routine tasks," but in your interview, they want to make sure that you can handle the daily drudge along with all of the exciting projects. Be positive in your response and say that routine tasks and regular hours will help create a stable work environment for when the chaotic, fun projects become available.

7. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Again, they want to see if you plan to stay with the company. What the interviewer wants to see is an applicant that is loyal to the company. When you answer, base your goals on something within the company and not completely on you.

8. What do you want to do with your life?

Work for this company, of course! Once more, this type of question during an interview is to determine if you are worth hiring. If you plan to stay only a year or so, you could prove to be a waste of money by the time they hire and train your replacement. On the other hand, if you plan to make your career at this company, you would be a solid investment.

9. What do you expect to be earning in five years?

While most interviewers expect you to give a monetary figure, be honest in the fact that it is hard to place a monetary value for the future with so many undetermined factors. Instead, focus on your value as an employee and what you hope to have earned/learned during your time there.

10. What subjects did you like least in college? Why?

Everyone has a subject that they hated, or at least that they didn't care for while in school. But, just like you should not speak badly about a past job, you do not want to speak badly about any of your courses (or professors). In lieu of some venting, focus on what you learned in a specific class, especially one that you did not think you would like.

11. Have you ever been unfairly released from a job?

This is a sneaky way for a company to ask an applicant if they have been fired during an interview. Depending on how they word it, it may not even be legal, but regardless, honesty is the best policy because they will find out if they are even considering hiring you.

12. If you are still employed, how do you manage to do interviews?

In other words, are you slacking on the job while looking for other work? No company wants to hire someone who is not loyal until the end. Remind the interviewer that everyone is entitled to personal time from work and you choose to use yours for interviews, as you remain committed to using your work time for professional purposes.

13. What have you heard about our company?

This question is intended to find out if you did your homework. How much do you know about the company? Lucky for you, you did your research and you may have even talked to a few friends to get some information. Use all of your resources, including any information you gained during the interview, to show what you know and why that information makes this company the one for you.

Going on an interview can be a bit nerve racking, especially in you are not prepared for some of the questions that they company will ask you. By studying these questions, as well as some of the more general ones, you will be ready to shine your way into that coveted position.
