Marketing, as a separate course in universities, has been taught in Bangladesh for the last four decades. I, personally, have been involved in teaching marketing at university level for about eleven years. In my observation there are some problems in teaching marketing in Bangladesh. Here, I am pointing out those for further discussion. It is mentionable that my objective is not to offend anyone or any institution. Rather, one should consider it as a self-criticism effort of a teacher who wants to overcome these limitations.

Improper Syllabus
Most of the universities are not developing their syllabuses in a right way. In many universities there is no well designed syllabus even. Local issues are highly ignored in most cases. The ‘ghost’ of western theories is running after them. University Grants Commission (UGC) is doing almost nothing in this regard.

Improper Course Outline
With few exceptions, teachers are not preparing their course outlines in an appropriate way. They are focusing on the western theories and examples only. In private universities teachers are under severe time pressure. In public universities faculties are not motivated enough to do something effective for their students. Moreover, teachers are interested mainly in their personal matters, and career issues i.e. achieving foreign scholarships, acquiring promotion-power-position, earning money and so on.

Lack of Local Text Book
We are teaching marketing for the last forty years in Bangladesh. Unfortunately we have a very few standard text books on the Bangladeshi perspective. As a result, students are suffering from lack of knowledge of the challenges of the local marketing environment.

Traditional Education Methodology
On one side, faculties are busy with their routine works e.g. taking classes, conducting exams, assigning grades to the students. On the other side, students are running after grades only. No body is thinking of creating anything new and adding to the present knowledge stream. Universities are treated either as ‘good’ coaching centers or as ‘effective’ training institutes.

Lack of Support for Research Works by the Universities
On one hand, in Bangladesh private universities are providing almost nothing for conducting research works. With few exceptions, they are only maximizing their net financial return. On the other hand, public universities have become wasteland for knowledge and are doing almost nothing but politics. Research works on local marketing issues are being shattered but nobody cares. Teachers are looking for higher degrees only.  Once they get it they just become complacent in research works and search out ways of earning position-power-money.

Lack of Interest to Understand and Explore the Local Marketing Environment
Almost all of the teachers are uninterested to know the reality of the local marketing environment though they are living in this country and planning to build up their career in this country. Most of them are living in the fantasy of the western society.

Lack of Corporate Attachment
It is not possible to teach marketing with its full notion from a theoretical perspective only. Universities need to build up and maintain effective relationships with corporate world in this regard. It is expected that universities will be the guiding body of corporate practices. Unfortunately there is no such relationship between them.

Absence of Learning Culture
Students are merely engaged with their preparation for exams. In most cases, they are not interested to learn anything more. On the other hand, with few exceptions, teachers are busy with making money. They do not know much out of their syllabuses. They are not interested even to learn anything in depth and contribute to their disciplines.

The Benchmark of the Evaluation of a Teacher
The success of a university teacher is measured either by the amount of money s/he has earned in his or her life or by the number of foreign degrees s/he has achieved. In worst cases, his or her success is determined even by his or her political power and position. Nobody is interested to know his or her contribution to the discipline.

*These are not all. You may point out some more aspects of the issue. Without pointing out the problems it will not be possible for us to get rid of those problems and get our education system to a world standard. Dear friends, nothing will be achievable without your active involvement. So, do not hesitate; do something for yourself and for the country!

Discount means reductions to a basic price of goods or services. On the other hand, the basic motive of a company to go for branding is to charge premium (higher) price for its products. Apparently it may seem that these two are contradictory marketing techniques. However, in reality discount may sometimes help to build up and maintain strong brand equity. Basically, a company may offer discount for several reasons: to face an economic recession, to enter into a new market or market segment, to clear stock lot of an old version of a brand, to increase market share in a short term, to face the challenge of severe competition, or even it may use discount as a promotional tool of its IMC program. By this way a company may use discount in its branding strategy effectively. In offering discount of a premium brand a company has to keep one thing in its mind: it has to offer discount in a way that it does no harm to the high image of its brand. The company must convince the customers that discount will not shrink the high perceived quality of its brand. Last but not the least, to be effective discount should be offered only for short-term perspective.

Center for Marketing Science (CMS) is a professional platform of the learners, academicians, and practitioners of marketing discipline. It has been initiated by a group of university teachers, and students of various private and public universities of Bangladesh with the support of the veteran industry leaders of the field. The prime goal of the organization is to create a cohesive environment between the academic spheres of various universities and the practical requirements of divergent industries of the country. For more detail please log on to www.cmsbd.net;
please feel free to ask any sort of information through our email: cmsbd04@gmail.com

Vision
The vision of Center for Marketing Science (CMS) is to transform Bangladesh from a “knowledge-receiver nation” to a “knowledge-provider nation”.

Mission
The mission of Center for Marketing Science (CMS) is to convert the traditional “lecture-based syllabus-centered GPA-hunting” university education system to a “research-based knowledge-creating” social endeavor.

Objectives
The major objectives of Center for Marketing Science (CMS) are as follows:
to alter the university students from a ‘GPA-Hunter’ to a ‘Knowledge-Creator’;
to change the university teachers from a “Selfish Knowledge-Gatherer” to a “Sacrificing Social Mentor”;
to create a congenial learning environment to accomplish a mutual benefit for the academicians and the industry-practitioners as well as for the society as a whole.

Besides agriculture, Cotton and Textile Industry was the driving force of the economy of ancient Bangladesh. ‘Muslin’ was one of the most prestigious ‘Brands’ of the then world. Bangladesh was one of the most desired tourism destinations at that time. It was a remarkable knowledge-based society of that era.

Colonial Period: The Era of Looting
The British colonial rulers brutally destroyed the cotton and textile industry of Bangladesh. Muslin lost its fame. Agriculture has become the source of boundless wealth of the colonial empire. After two century’s looting by the British colonial power Bangladesh became almost a wasteland.

Pakistan Era: Neo-Colonial Deprivation
After 1947, Bangladesh became the victim of the Pakistani neo-colonial deprivation. Disparity, socio-economic inequality and injustice increased between the East and West Pakistan. Despite of being the “Surplus Region” Bangladesh, the then East Pakistan, remained deprived from all sorts of benefits from its western counterpart.

Independence: The Beginning of a New Dream
1972-1991: In spite of several national and international conspiracies against the existence of the independent Bangladesh, and a number of natural and ‘political’ calamities (e.g. cyclone, famine etc.), Bangladesh survived successfully as an independent, democracy-loving nation.
1992-2011: Private sector, with all its limitations, has become the driving force of the new economy of Bangladesh. Ready Made Garment (RMG) industry has become the pride for the entire nation. Besides this, pharmaceuticals, ship-building, leather goods, and electronics business focus on a brighter future. Now-a-days, local entrepreneurs aim to be the corporate power house at the regional and global perspective. Bangladesh, as one of the ‘Next-11’ nations, acclaimed its position in today’s world with a formidable GDP growth rate of 6-7%.
2012: After a struggle of a couple of centuries, the “Made in Bangladesh” tagline has got the momentum again. In the next two decades, I dream, Bangladesh will be one of the top economies of the world. Now it’s the turn for Bangladesh, our loving homeland!
