It was Ekushey Television that brought new dimension to news anchoring in Bangladesh and changed television news casting forever. It brought glamour, variety and entertainment to what previously was mere news reading with occasional insertion of news footage, mostly foreign. But Ekushey introduced field reporting with live footage and a new crop of young newscasters. News was transformed from mere information to infotainment.
News is now probably amongst the most popular shows on television, thanks to more interesting and attractive presentation and packaging. And along with it has come a new generation of newscasters, who are not only young but also energetic and committed. There is a growing demand amongst young people to pursue news-casting as an occupation as opposed to earlier times when news-casting was seen as the hobby of a few moonlighting individuals.
At present, the country has more than 14 private channels, and many more are in the pipeline. So there is a growing demand for newscasters, and it is opening up a new avenue for educated young people, particularly women, who are looking for a decent job.
News-presenting has evolving as profession in Bangladesh, not so much for the remuneration yet but for the glamour and fame that come with it. It is like any other profession. There are big names, who have already made it in the arcane world of news-casting.
Then there are the strugglers who are barely scraping with 500-1,000 taka
per news hour and ambitiously working to get more space.
it will continue...........
